The Mercy of Eternity: A Memoir of Depression and Grace, by Eric G. Wilson

In his best-selling book Against Happiness: In Praise of Melancholy, Eric G. Wilson challenged our culture’s blindly insistent pursuit of happiness at all costs. In his harrowing yet ultimately hopeful memoir, The Mercy of Eternity, the author turns an unsparing eye on his own continuing struggle with bipolar depression and finds, within the very illness that causes so much suffering, the resources for hope, forgiveness, and love.

As a bright student-athlete on his way to West Point, Eric Wilson seemed to be well on the way to a fulfilling life. Yet he was haunted by overwhelming feelings of his deep insignificance. As he grew older, the traditional means of fulfillment—marriage and professional success—did nothing to assuage the descents into darkness and destructive behavior.Therapy and medication have offered some relief, but the birth of his daughter ultimately forces his hand. In some ways, the answer has been in front of him the whole time, for English professor Wilson finds in the literature of Coleridge, Blake, and others the lessons that depression might teach. When he comes upon “negative theology”—the school of thought that finds God in the “dark night of the soul”—Wilson discovers the framework for a radical call to forgive depression.

Only by forgiving this capricious, impersonal force is Wilson able to find the grace to move beyond the cycles of destructive self-absorption.Wilson admits that he continues to struggle, but in facing his depression instead of trying to escape it, he finds wisdom and grace.

Beautifully and accessibly written, The Mercy of Eternity is a brief yet profound meditation on the largest question of life.

Review
"Dark, brilliant, transcendent…Wilson has laid bare his soul in this brief but profound book, and that could not have been easy. He has done a brave service for those suffering from mental illness, those who love them and those who think deeply about suffering and joy. You're not likely to find a more intelligent or more deeply felt book about a Christian's life than this one." —The Star Tribune

From the Back Cover
Before the war, there had been eleven Jewish families, fifty people in all, in the small German town of Schmallenberg. But when Hans Frankenthal returned in 1945 at the age of nineteen, orphaned and robbed of his youth by the Nazis, he found that all the Jews of Schmallenberg had disappeared too-and no one who remained cared to hear what had happened to them, or to him. Here, Frankenthal tells his story-of the horrors of the Holocaust survived by one man, but also of its aftermath, observed by an unwelcome witness to Schmallenberg's, and Germany's, shameful past.
Summoning the vanished world of Jewish livestock dealers in rural Germany, the milieu of his boyhood, Frankenthal paints a clear picture of what it was like to live as a Jew in a small German town before and after the Nazis came to power. He gives a harrowing account of his family's deportation to Auschwitz and of his "life" with his brother as slave laborers in an I. G. Farben factory near the death camp where his parents perished. When, acting on his father's last words to him, Frankenthal returns to his hometown, we get a rare firsthand look at the post-war experience of a Jewish survivor in small-town Germany. A sobering snapshot of the larger reckoning denied and delayed, Frankenthal's account of his own post-war trials and of his fellow citizens' reaction to the Jewish tragedy is an important reminder of how much of history resides in one person's story, and how much depends on our willingness to hear it.

About the Author
Hans Frankenthal was born in 1926 in Schmallenberg in the Sauerland region of Germany. In 1943, his family was deported to Auschwitz, where his parents were sent at once to the gas chambers. Hans and his brother Ernst survived slave labor in the Monowitz and Mittelbau Dora concentration camps. Liberated by the red army in 1945, Frankenthal returned to Schmallenberg, where he ran a butcher's shop and worked as a livestock dealer. Today he is a member of the Regional Association of the Jewish Communities of Westphalia and Lippe and the Central Council of Jews in Germany. He is also Deputy Chairman of the Auschwitz Committee in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Historical Dictionary of Lithuania, by Saulius Suziedelis

On March 11, 1990, the newly-elected Supreme Soviet of the Lithuanian SSR formally declared the restoration of the Republic of Lithuania as an independent state, ending a half-century of Russian Soviet rule.

The least industrialized of the Baltic states, Lithuania's economic mainstays have long been agriculture and food processing, with the development of industries such as electronics, wood processing and petroleum refining occurring only in the 1960s and 1970s. Its political isolation during the last half-century has led many people to forget that the country is as "European" as France and Italy, and has, in fact, played a major role in the general development of Europe during its political and cultural alliances with Poland as well as its Orthodox, eastern Slavic, Russian, Ukranian, and Belarusan neighbors. Lithuania played roles in the development of major movements such as the Renaissance, the Reformation, Romanticism and democracy. These interactions with other countries have influenced Lithuanian's cultural development into one of the most multinational in Europe.

The Historical Dictionary of Lithuania attempts to introduce the non-specialist to the most important mileposts of Lithuania's past. Present-day spellings of place names are utilized in accordance with those used by the National Geographic Society, and alternate versions which occur frequently in literature are referenced. Appendixes provide pronunciation guides, lists of Lithuanian rulers from 1251-1795, and political leaders since 1918. Four maps and a detailed chronology provide further background information.

An Erie, Pennsylvania native, Burleigh graduated from the National Conservatory of Music in New York, where he became friends with Dvorak and was the first Negro to sing in St. George's Episcopal Church and Temple Emanu-El choirs. He was recognized as the first Negro American art song composer and arranger of spirituals for concert use. Biographical chapters, which also depict the larger American musical scene and its singers from 1914 to 1935, are followed by background and analyses of Burleigh's compositions (art songs, instrumental works, arrangements of spirituals), a discography, catalogue of works, extensive bibliography, chapter notes, and detailed index. With many photos and musical examples.

...a valuable volume...we are indeed indebted to Simpson for...the excellent index, bibliography, and discography make this book all the more valuable...an excellent resource. (Notes: Quarterly Journal of the Music Library Association)

...likely to be the most penetrating and useful source for some time...as complete a picture of Burleigh as possible...very readable...Recommended for all libraries. (CHOICE)

...Simpson's well-researched volume is an invaluable addition to the anals of American music history...pioneering study. (Journal Of Erie Studies)

Anyone who arranged spirituals with the distinction of Harry Thacker Burleigh and occupied such an important place in the musical development of black Americans is worth a thoroughly documented study of the kind that Anne Key Simpson has now provided. (Music & Letters)

...important...Simpson has broken new ground by gathering the most extensive colleciton of Burleigh materials since...1966... (American Music)

...laudable...Her book's most valuable contribution is its extensive catalogue of Burleigh's music. (Isam Newsletter)

...fills a gap, because very little is written about the negro spiritual in standard music history books... (Eir)

The Moral Obligation to Be Intelligent: Selected Essays, by Lionel Trilling

Bringing together the thoughts of one of American literature’s sharpest cultural critics, this compendium will open the eyes of a whole new audience to the work of Lionel Trilling.  Trilling was a strenuous thinker who was proud to think “too much.”  As an intellectual he did not spare his own kind, and though he did not consider himself a rationalist, he was grounded in the world.

This collection features 32 of Trilling’s essays on a range of topics, from Jane Austen to George Orwell and from the Kinsey Report to Lolita.  Also included are Trilling’s seminal essays “Art and Neurosis” and “Manners, Morals, and the Novel.”  Many of the pieces made their initial appearances in periodicals such as The Partisan Review and Commentary; most were later reprinted in essay collections.  This new gathering of his writings demonstrates again Trilling’s patient, thorough style.  Considering “the problems of life”—in art, literature, culture, and intellectual life—was, to him, a vital occupation, even if he did not expect to get anything as simple or encouraging as “answers.”  The intellectual journey was the true goal.

No matter the subject, Trilling’s arguments come together easily, as if constructing complicated defenses and attacks were singularly simple for his well-honed mind.  The more he wrote on a subject and the more intricate his reasoning, the more clear that subject became; his elaboration is all function and no filler.  Wrestling with Trilling’s challenging work still yields rewards today, his ideas speaking to issues that transcend decades and even centuries.

From Library Journal
Trilling (1905-74) epitomized the idea of the 1950s New York intellectual. In opposition to the prevailing theories of the New Critics, he adopted a broader approach: the study of the interconnections between literature and culture. This collection features 32 of his essays on a range of topics, from Jane Austen to George Orwell, from the Kinsey Report to Lolita. Also included are Trilling's seminal essays "Art and Neurosis" and "Manners, Morals, and the Novel." Initially appearing in periodicals like the Partisan Review and Commentary, most of these pieces were later reprinted in Trilling's essay collections, which included The Liberal Imagination, Beyond Culture, and the posthumously published Speaking of Literature and Society. Recommended for public and academic libraries, especially those lacking the earlier collections.

From Booklist
Trilling (1905^-74) was an enormously influential critic who vehemently eschewed simplistic or emotional responses to art or morality. The author of many works, he was especially exigent, to use one of his favorite words, in his essays, most of which have long been out of print. Republished now in this substantial volume edited and vividly introduced by Leon Wieseltier, the literary editor for the New Republic and author of Kaddish (1998), these essays and lectures, still fresh and provocative, cover topics ranging from Austen, James, and Frost to the connections between art, neurosis, and politics. Distrustful of rapture and keen on reading literature as, in Wieseltier's words, "documents for a moral history of culture," Trilling embraced complexity and nuance and held critical integrity in the highest esteem. His essays possess great intellectual weight, and their richness, deep seriousness of thought, and sonorous vocabulary and syntax are balanced by a lashing wit and remarkable energy. Donna Seaman

Review
"Trilling constantly pits 'spontaneity, complexity, and variety' against the propensity to commiserate with, then condescend to, then coerce our peers."--Kirkus Reviews

"There was never just one thing, in [Trilling's] work. He was mentally indefatigable; there was order in his writing, but there was no repose."--Leon Wieseltier

"Wieseltier . . . has chosen wisely . . . One can recommend this book as either an introduction to or a reminder of one of the few intelligent men of our time toward whose work . . . an intellectual obligation still exists."

Relevant moral issues....
By Dianne Foster
On Sunday 7/30/00, The New York Times carried a review of "The Moral Obligation to be Intelligent" -- an article by Edward Rothstein entitled, "Dated? Perhaps, But His Insights Remain Powerful" -- Rothstein's insights are useful and I agree with most of them, but I found more than Rothstein had space or inclination to address.
Trilling's essays cover the core moral issues 19th and early 20th century writers addressed--fascism, communism, pornography, evil, the nature of beauty, the existence and nature of God. While the book focuses on the thoughts and writing of mostly dead white males (and Jane Austen), the struggle continues, and we all have a moral responsibility to be actively informed.
I bought this book because it contained two essays on Jane Austen of whom I am excessively fond. One of these essays, "Mansfield Park", addresses her most controversial book. Trilling wrote "Mansfield Park" because he believed the book has had been mischaracterized by those who disliked Fanny Price.
Trilling discusses a major moral issue in this essay--one many "sophisticated" people deliberately ignore--irony can be evil. He says that "In irony, even in the large derived sense of the word, there is a kind of malice." He suggests there may have been malice on the part of Austen when she engaged in irony. But, he suggests, there are two kinds of irony--the detached kind and the engaged kind. It is the former that is evil because it takes place at the expense of others, i.e. is not charitable. The other kind of irony is involved, the user is attempting to meliorate a painful situation within which she or he finds himself. An example of the latter is the narrator's comment in "Pride and Prejudice" -- "it is a truth universally acknowledged that a single young man in possesion of a good fortune must be in want of a wife." An example of the cruel kind of irony occurs in "Mansfield Park" via Mary Crawford's comments meant in jest.
Trilling suggests the greatness of "Mansfield Park" is "commensuate with it's power to offend." He says whereas "Pride and Prejudice" celebrates the "traits of spiritedness, vivacity, celerity, and lightness" and "associates them with happiness and virtue" Mansfield Park does the opposite. "Mansfield's Park"'s impulse is not to forgive, but to condemn. Its praise is not for social freedom, but social constraint. The condemnation is of the wrong kind of irony, the hurtful kind of irony, the irony of the uncharitable toward Fanny Price. "The virtue of Fanny Price is rewarded by more than itself." It is beyond the pleasure principle. Remember duty, honor, sacrifice? In the end, Trilling suggests Fanny Price is a kind of Christian saint like the pale Milly Theale in James' "Wings of the Dove."
Does it matter? Are those who seek goodness fools? He raises this issue and shares what he believes to be Jane Austen's thoughts on the topic, which he latter expands in "The Fate of Pleasure." Is there something beyond mere pleasure?
Keats thought so. He said "Truth is Beauty." But what about evil. Is evil real? Keats says yes, but so is beauty. The reality of evil does not cancel the reality of beauty. The world is a terrible place where evil and beauty lie side by side. Trilling's essay on Keats was so wonderful, it made me cry.
I marked dozens of passages in my book that I wanted to share, but there is not enough space. The sections of the essays that I enjoyed most, other than those on Austen (the second essay was not completed when Trilling died), coverend the writing of Henry James. I had never seen him as the natural heir to Austen. Now I shall go back and reread James. Also, I was pleased to see Trilling trash Theodore Dreiser. I hated his writing and so apparently did Trilling. A more modern critic would have done a better job of covering George Elliot--Mary Ann Evans--certainly "Adam Bede" is a book about morality, but Trilling did not pay much attention to women or ethnic writers--why I have to give it 4 stars. Too bad, they could have added to this discourse, but don't let that prevent your reading this fine book.

Philosophy for the reader of "ordinary strong intelligence"
By A Customer
I'm an English major, and last year, in my third year of university (I'm 27, however), I purchased this book, struck by
the title. I'd read a couple of Trilling's essays several years
earlier and liked them, but I was put off by his tendency to relate literature to moral and political issues. "Boring," I
thought, having had my ideas of art formed in high school by Oscar Wilde and, later, Camille Paglia. But I've become more
open-minded since then, and when I started reading this book I
couldn't put it down--I read 80% of it in one weekend of doing
nothing else and the rest of it by the end of the month.
Trilling is a fantastic essay-writer who knows how to draw the
reader in with his rhetoric and draw everything towards a
resounding, moving climax. Most of the essays in this collection
are less works of criticism than erudite ruminations to which
Trilling has been moved by specific works of literature or by
considering literature as a whole. He comes up with simply
fascinating, extremely suggestive ideas; for example, in "The
Fate of Pleasure," one of my favourite essays in the volume, he
suggests that pleasure has fallen out of favour in the modern era. Like many of his other intriguing ideas, it is the sort of
thing that rings generally true without really being susceptible
to proof; nor is Trilling that great at arguing his positions or
even defining his terms. However, he offers lucid and passionate
discussions of ideas, drawn from his study of literature, that
are generally only found in dry or head-breakingly difficult
philosophical works. These are essays for the dabbler in philosophy, but that's not to belittle them: in one of the essays
Trilling complains that in the modern era (naturally) philosophy
has become a subject for specialists rather than for the person of "ordinary strong intelligence" (I'm quoting from memory, but that's the idea). Even if he's not always successful in focussing his argument or proving his thesis, he'll start your
mind going on broad, fascinating topics (pleasure, the abyss,
the will, "being," "mind"), and you can pursue the ideas in greater detail on your own, at your leisure. Also, like Camille
Paglia and Harold Bloom, Trilling loves to play the devil's advocate, and he therefore loves to criticize liberalism although he was himself a passionate liberal. This will probably
give him an unfortunate appeal for conservatives, but the people
who will get most out of the book are liberals who enjoy having
their assumptions questioned. That constant questioning of his
own assumptions, when they are shared by the reader, is one of
the things that makes Trilling such an electrifying writer.

First rate literary and cultural criticism
By Douglas Doak
Okay, so it isn't precisely beach reading, but this collection of literary and cultural pieces by one of the most influential critics and essayists of the 20th century belongs on the bookshelf of every literate person. The essays on Wordsworth, Twain and Austen's "Mansfield Park" are minor masterpieces. Leon Wieseltier, literary editor of The New Republic, contributes a fine introduction.

The Broadway Song Companion is the first complete guide and access point to the vast literature of the Broadway musical for the solo performer. Designed with the working actor in mind, the volume lists every song from over 210 Broadway shows, giving the name of the character(s) who sing(s) the song, its exact vocal range, and categorizing each by song style (uptempo, narrative ballad, swing ballad, moderate character piece, etc.). A number of indexes to the volume list titles of songs, first lines, composer's and lyricist's names, and each song by voice type. For instance, a soprano looking for a ballad to sing will find every song in that category in the index. All solos, duets, and trios are indexed in this manner, with quartets and larger ensembles listed by voice type. Furthermore, the instant breakdowns (how many lead characters, who sings what song, and the range requirements of each character) will be a valuable resource to directors and producers.

Amazingly Useful
By A Customer
This is an incredible book - organized by show, voice and song type. It includes the exact range of each song in each show, which is incredibly helpful for those of us who don't have the range that we'd like. The only thing I could find wrong with it is that it categorizes the songs by the voice type of the actor who originated the role, not necessarily by the range of the song itself (a song originally sung by a tenor is listed as a tenor song, even if it's in a baritone range). Other than that, it's amazing, and the most useful book I've found for musical theatre performers.

Are you kidding me?
By Eddie
What an amazing idea for a book. If only the author had enough intelligence to actually learn what a musical was or perhaps look at at least one score before charging us forty dollars. For example, Audrey II, in "Little Shop of Horrors", is clearly a Bass yet we are told HE is a Soprano. The last song that Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II ever wrote together was "Edelweiss". However Mr. Devenney does not feel it necessary to include it with the other songs in "Sound of Music". Perhaps he needed room for "Cable hears Bali Ha'i" in "South Pacific", which is kind of funny because the song does not exist. We can chalk a few mistakes up to the editors... let's say 1...2...maybe even 3 but just based on a simple cover to cover reading, there were..... drumroll ......................47.

Heraclitus Seminar (Studies in Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy), by Martin Heidegger, Eugen Fink

In 1966-67 Martin Heidegger and Eugen Fink conducted an extraordinary seminar on the fragments of Heraclitus. Heraclitus Seminar records those conversations, documenting the imaginative and experimental character of the multiplicity of interpretations offered and providing an invaluable portrait of Heidegger involved in active discussion and explication.

Heidegger's remarks in this seminar illuminate his interpretations not only of pre-Socratic philosophy, but also of figures such as Hegel and Holderllin. At the same time, Heidegger clarifies many late developments in his own understanding of truth, Being, and understanding. Heidegger and Fink, both deeply rooted in the Freiburg phenomenological tradition, offer two competing approaches to the phenomenological reading of the ancient text-a kind of reading that, as Fink says, is "not so much concerned with the philological problematic ... as with advancing into the matter itself, that is, toward the matter that must have stood before Heraclitus's spiritual view."

From the Back Cover
In the winter semester of 1966-67 at the University of Freiburg, Martin Heidegger conducted an extraordinary seminar on the fragments of Heraclitus. This book records those conversations, documenting the imaginative and experimental character of the multiplicity of interpretations offered and providing an invaluable portrait of Heidegger involved in active discussion and explication.

About the Author
Martin Heidegger was born in Messkirch, Baden, Germany on September 22, 1889. He studied Roman Catholic theology and philosophy at the University of Frieburg before joining the faculty at Frieburg as a teacher in 1915. Eight years later Heidegger took a teaching position at Marburg. He taught there until 1928 and then went back to Frieburg as a professor of philosophy. As a philosopher, Heidegger developed existential phenomenology. He is still widely regarded as one of the most original philosophers of the 20th century. Influenced by other philosophers of his time, Heidegger wrote the book, Being in Time, in 1927. In this work, which is considered one of the most important philosophical works of our time, Heidegger asks and answers the question "What is it, to be?" Other books written by Heidegger include Basic Writings, a collection of Heidegger's most popular writings; Nietzsche, an inquiry into the central issues of Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophy; On the Way to Language, Heidegger's central ideas on the origin, nature and significance of language; and What is Called Thinking, a systematic presentation of Heidegger's later philosophy. Since the 1960s, Heidegger's influence has spread beyond continental Europe and into a number of English-speaking countries. Heidegger died in Messkirch on May 26, 1976.

A Great Intro. to Difficult Thinking
By T. Beers
Martin Heidegger's special intellectual relationship with the Presocratics is often discussed as if the German philosopher was some sort of romantic originalist or nostalgist. But Heidegger always insisted that the point about going back to Heraclitus, Parmenides and rest was not to recover the specific contents of their thought (or, worse, to wallow in their supposed primitive "purity"), but to recapture the spirit of their efforts to "think the question of Being." You won't find a better presentation of this - or a more candid glimpse of Heidegger as a working philosopher - than in this text. It presents the record of a seminar on Heraclitus conducted by Heidegger and the German scholar Eugen Fink in the late 1960s. Heidegger's discussion of specific Heraclitian texts makes for difficult reading but is, generally speaking, quite lucid. And the dialog with Fink and student participants is eye-opening. (Heidegger's pronouncements are by no means always taken as Gospel!) Most important, in spite of their rather recondite subject matter, these seminar records wonderfully illuminate Heidegger's own philosophical development in the last two decades of his life. Although this book does require familiarity with Heidegger's work and somewhat unique philosophical terminology, as well as familiarity with the history of philosophy generally, I wouldn't call it a text "for specialists only." Unless, of course, all readers of philosophy are specialists! And it does provide a welcome corrective to current "New Age" tendencies to view Heraclitus and the other Presocratics as authors of quasi-religious wisdom manuals. No dumbing-down here; just a tough confrontation with difficult material!

Several Interpretations
By Barry N. Bishop
This actually is an interesting if somewhat inconclusive volume. It is something like a transcript of a seminar on the pre-Socratic thinker, the seminar being conducted in the 1966-67 academic year by Eugen Fink and Martin Heidegger. The seminar actually seems to be led by Professor Fink, and there are occasional comments and questions from other participants besides those from Heidegger.

The theme of the seminar is an attempted interpretation of some of the Heraclitus fragments available--about forty fragments are quoted in Greek, translated, and compared in unpacking certain themes. Fink's hermeneutic starting point is in the concepts of the "one" (hen) and the "many" (panta). Heidegger's focus, characteristically, is more on "truth" (aletheia) or, as he would interpret the Greek word, the "clearing" and on logos, which crudely and misleadingly could be translated as the "word". The two professors seem to know one another well and respectfully, and in fact Fink was a follower of Heidegger. But their points of view seem to differ considerably, and there is a certain inconclusiveness in the exchanges as a result. Also it apparently is the case that the seminar was expected to continue, which did not occur after the semester in which it first was offered.

Since I was interested primarily in what Heidegger was thinking about Heraclitus, I found Fink's leading and dominating the discussion somewhat disappointing. At the same time, there are some good exchanges and some powerful hints at Heidegger's perspective. The one below is a highly characteristic Heideggerian comment just at the end of the book.

"The dark is, to be sure, without light, but cleared. Our concern is to experience unconcealment as clearing. That is what is unthought in what is thought in the whole history of thought. In Hegel, the need consisted in the satisfaction of thought. For us, on the contrary, the plight of what is unthought in what is thought reigns." (p. 162)

Not to be facetious, his concern with "the dark" that opens up or clears, making room for the light, actually sheds considerable light on Heidegger's vision of the truth ("unconcealment") as it relates to himself and Heraclitus. One must work through numerous pieces of Heidegger's opus to glean insights into his core thinking, and this volume provides some useful and perhaps more spontaneous hints that add to more focused work elsewhere.

After all these years, still a great guide to early Greek
By epic phlegm Hooha
I would like to suggest that the widest stance that I have encountered reading philosophy shows up in Greek on page 18 of HERACLITUS SEMINAR: Martin Heidegger and Eugen Fink, translated by Charles H. Seibert (Northwestern University Press, 1993). The English translation was copyright 1979 by The University of Alabama Press. First published in German as HERACLIT. I have the second paperbound printing, 1994. The hermeneutical circle is correlated to fragment 7, translated in Note 4 on page 163, but the discussion of the Greek terms involving a moving relatedness of things that actually exist which elucidates an indeterminate number of things of a quintessential kind. "In smoke, to be sure, things become elusive, but it does not eliminate those distinctions which become evident . . ." (Fink, p. 18). Heidegger becomes interested in the gnosis of "grasping humans" on page 19.

This book does not have an index. The page guide on page 171 shows that every ten pages in English is 16, 15, 14, or 17 pages in the German. Heraclitus wrote a book which was familiar to many thinkers in the ancient world, but all we can do now is "cast light on an inner coherence of the fragments' meaning, but without pretending to reconstruct the original form of Heraclitus' lost writing, [On Nature]. We shall attempt to trace a thread throughout the multiplicity of his sayings in the hope that a certain track can thereby show itself. Whether our arrangement of the fragments is better than that adopted by Diels is a question that should remain unsettled." (Fink, p. 4).

I believe the Fr. 1 mentioned by Heidegger on page 7 is the beginning of Heraclitus' book. In the discussion, we have the exchange of ideas:

Heidegger: Since when do we have concepts at all?
Participant: Only since Plato and Aristotle. We even have the first philosophical dictionary with Aristotle.
Heidegger: While Plato manages to deal with concepts only with difficulty, we see that Aristotle deals with them more easily. (p. 7).

One of the problems with concepts is how they are applied:

Heidegger: Thus, you mean the transformation of things with respect to one ground.
Fink: The ground meant here is not some substance or the absolute, but light and time. (p. 10).

Fink: . . . The transformations of fire then imply that everything goes over into everything; so that nothing retains the definiteness of its character but, following an indiscernable wisdom, moves itself throughout by opposites.
Heidegger: But why does Heraclitus then speak of steering?
Fink: The transformations of fire are in some measure a circular movement that gets steered by lightning, . . . The movement, in which everything moves throughout everything through opposites, gets guided.
Heidegger: But may we speak of opposites or of dialectic here at all? Heraclitus knows neither something of opposites nor of dialectic.
Fink: True, opposites are not thematic with Heraclitus. . . . (p. 11).

The set-up is basically a dialog, and considers topics like:

Fink: The problem of constitution in Husserl's phenomenology . . . (p. 84).

Heidegger: From this it follows once again that we may not interpret Heraclitus from a later time. (p. 85).
Fink: All the concepts that arise in the dispute over idealism and realism are insufficient to characterize the shining-forth, the coming-forth-to-appearance, of what is. It seems to me more propitious to speak of shining-forth than of shining-up. . . . (p. 85).

The poem "Hyperion" mentions Heraclitus and Heidegger discusses being as beauty in Hegel along with "The one that in itself distinguishes itself." (p. 113).

Participant: "There is no sentence of Heraclitus' that I have not taken up in my LOGIC."
Heidegger: What does this sentence mean? (p. 113).

Fr. 88 of Heraclitus, as Diels translates, "And it is always one and the same, what dwells (?) within us: living and dead and waking and sleeping and young and old. For this is changed over to that and that changed back over to this." (p. 118).

Heidegger then has to correct himself on Hegel by reading some lecture:

"The true deficiency of the Greek religion as opposed to the Christian is that in it appearance constitutes the highest form, in general, the whole of the divine, while in the Christian religion appearing obtains only as a moment of the divine." (p. 122).

But he can also complain about being translated into French:

Heidegger: In French, Dasein is translated by [being there], for example by Sartre. But with this, everything that was gained as a new position in BEING AND TIME is lost. Are humans there like a chair is there? (p. 126).

Heidegger is quite interested in how well he is understood in German, but he finally comes back to the plight of what is unthought in the end.

And Quiet Flows the Vodka: or When Pushkin Comes to Shove: The Curmudgeon's Guide to Russian Literature with the Devil's Dictionary of Rece

Russia has fascinated outsiders for centuries, and according to Alicia Chudo, it is high time this borscht stopped. In this hilarious send up of Russian literature and history, Chudo takes no prisoners as she examines Russia's great tradition of unreadable geniuses, revolutionaries who can't hit the broad side of a tsar, and Soviets who like their vodka but love their tractors.

Written in the tradition of 1066 and All That, The Pooh Perplex, and The Classics Redefined, And Quiet Flows the Vodka will, with any luck, be the final word on the ghastly first two millennia of Russian literature, history, and culture.

From Library Journal
Chudo, the pen name of Gary Saul Morson (Slavic languages and literature, Northwestern Univ.), has written a satirical survey of Russian civilization that is pure fun. Readers should not seek information here, for the book presupposes a good knowledge of Russian history and a thorough dislike of the pretentiousness of official interpretations. The author first gives a history of Russian literature in which most of the names and titles sound just a little different from those readers will remember but now have often ironic meanings. For example, Galicia becomes Garlicia, and the Russian scholar Vinogradov (meaning from the vineyard ) appears as Vinopianov ( wine-drunk ). Chudo analyzes such literary masterpieces as War and Punishment and Nose from the Underground. David Senzel!s The Russians: Victims of History from Yaroslavl to Yeltsin (Book Guild, 1997) also aims at a humorous discussion of Russian civilization yet mistakenly sticks to the facts; unfortunately, as Nikolai Gogol noted, Russian facts are boring. Highly recommended for all Russian studies collections."Bert Beynen, Des Moines Area Community Coll., Ankeny, IO

From Kirkus Reviews
Russian history and literature get a good thrashing from truly grouchy Professor Chudo, assisted by editor Sobesednikov--both of whom are official pseudonyms of Russian Lit maven Gary S. Morson.Steppe by steppe, we learn from this elaborate put-on--and put-down--about the Russian national drink (vodka), national philosophy (vodka), national song (Vodka!), and most recent Five-Year Plan (anti-Semitism). Obscurity becomes lucid and vice versa. Obviously Chudo knows a lot of arcane stuff about the Slavic intelligentsia and does her utmost to protect us from it. From the graves of academe she delivers the ultimate in literary criticism. This seminal satirical study works out convoluted textual analysis and analyzes textual convolutions: included are several treasures like a new Gogol tale (clearly from the hand of the master) and an undoubted story by Dostoevsky (from the hand of the same master). Along with many footnotes and shameless wordplay, there's real verisimilitude to what might, at first glance, pass for a junior college's selection of an appropriate sophomore textbook. All of the Russias is a large target, and this spoof hits it. Unfortunately, other traits of Russian letters (feckless torpor and ennui) emerge in the appended material of comments regarding the Russian language, some faux advertising, a spotty chronology, and a comic dictionary (festooned with much doggerel) in the mode of Flaubert and Bierce. Chudo would have done well to recall her reference to a 19th-century novel so tedious that even its translator didn't read it. Nevertheless, the main text, often as nimble as Nijinsky, disses the Slavs in a manner that will certainly cause a lot of academic hilarity and possibly, as an American-Zionist provocation, a major diplomatic incident. Despite an underdone potato or two, this rich comic serving of borscht will be deemed savory by many a Department of Russian Studies. -- Copyright © 2000 Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Review
"There is little that needs saying except bravo! . . . [B]y my lights, this is a brilliant satire that clicks from beginning to end. The book is an intriguing mixture of invented nonsense and quite genuine reflections on the sad history of Russia and the qualities--at once morose and wild--of its literature." --Frederick Crews, author of Postmodern Pooh

Amusing, but no "1066 and All That"
By Ursiform
If you swallow the hype, and go in expecting this book to on a level with "1066 and All That" you will be disappointed. "Chudo" has failed to absorb the lesson that "brevity is the soul of wit", a philosophy that helps make "1066 and All That" the wonderful book it is. There are certainly humorous moments in this book, but there are also long stretches that try too hard without every really getting funny. The "dictionary" at the end has far more duds than truly funny entries. If you love Russian literature you should probably take a look at this book, but don't expect to fall out of your chair laughing very often.

First rate parody
By A Customer
What higher calling can humor have than to deflate irrational self-importance? This book succeeds wonderfully at ridiculing not only the more dubious aspects of the Russian ideosyncracy (such as their fondness for liquor, autocracy, mental illness, and attempted suicide) but also the pretensions of contemporary American literary academics.
The chapters on the origins of Russian literature, on Dostoevsky, and on Tolstoy are among the funniest things I have ever read. Others chapters are less consistent, but the literate misanthropy and the impatience with irrationality that informs them makes the entire book both enjoyable and relevant.
I recommend this very highly.

Was A Gift: He Loved It
By Josie Louise
Bought this for Christmas for my husband who has studied Russian/USSR history and its military history, as well as some Russian literature. He loved this book, out of all the books I gave him he finished this first. He did say that you have to have knowledge on Russian affairs and lit, there were a few bits he didn't quite "get," but he said he really enjoyed this. I'd have to recommend this to others with his interests and who are familiar with the themes in the book.
