At Home with André and Simone Weil, by Sylvie Weil

Translated from the French by Benjamin Ivry, Simone Weil was one of the twentieth century’s most original philosopher-critics, and as a result her legacy has been claimed by many. This memoir by Weil’s niece is strong-willed and incisive and as close as we are likely to get to the real Simone Weil. Born into a freethinking Jewish family, Weil contributed many articles to Socialist and Communist journals and was active in the Spanish Civil War until her health failed.

In 1940 she became strongly attracted to Roman Catholicism and the Passion of Christ. Most of her works, published posthumously, continue to inform debates in ethics, philosophy, and spirituality surrounding questions of sacrifice, asceticism, and the virtues of manual labor. Massively influential, Weil’s writings were widely praised by such readers as Albert Camus, T. S. Eliot, Simone de Beauvoir, Pope John XXIII, Czeslaw Milosz, and Susan Sontag. Sylvie Weil recovers the deeply Jewish nature of Simone’s thinking and details how her preoccupations with charity and justice were fully in the tradition of tzedakah, the Jewish religious obligation toward these actions.

Using previously unpublished family correspondence and conversations, Sylvie Weil offers a more authentically personal portrait of her aunt than previous biographers have provided. At Home with André and Simone Weil illuminates Simone’s relationship to her family, especially to her brother, the great Princeton mathematician André Weil. A clear-eyed and uncompromising memoir of her family, At Home with André and Simone Weil is a fresh look at the noted French philosopher, mystic, and social activist.

Review
"A magnificent narrative which brings back to life the brother and sister, born three years apart yet very like twins, both superlatively gifted."—Le Monde

"Sylvie Weil's memoir is simply one of the best books I've read in the past decade. At turns poignant, poetic, and deeply personal, Chez les Weil is a movingly honest exploration of her own identity and the exceptional influences that helped shape it, particularly her father, André, and his sister, Simone, her grandparents and ancestors, and the Holocaust." —Paul LeClerc, president, The New York Public Library

"The missing link in the story of André and Simone Weil is Sylvie Weil, daughter of the great mathematician, niece of the legendary philosopher. In her memoirs, which are much more than that, the 'saints' are humanized, while the 'merely' personal is transformed into something rich and strange. One enters Sylvie's world to find André and Simone, and discovers there a hidden treasure: Sylvie herself. No student of André or Simone Weil can afford not to enter this captivating universe." —Palle Yourgrau, author of A World Without Time: The Forgotten Legacy of Gödel and Einstein

"At Home with André and Simone Weil is an elegant and witty memoir-cum-reflection." —The Spectator

misnomer
By Grant Cairns
This a rather poetic depiction of the Weil family, particularly André and Simone and their parents, from the perspective of the author, daughter of André Weil. André Weil was one of the dominant figures in mathematics in the 20th century. The account here is quite consistent with André Weil's autobiography "The Apprenticeship of a mathematician". Although Simone Weil is a central character in this book, she died shortly after the birth of the author, so there is no direct recollections of Simone Weil. So the title is something of a misnomer. The title of the original French work, "Chez les Weil", is more accurate.

The image that is created of this brilliant family is vaguely reminiscent of Salinger's fictional Glass family, in "Franny and Zooey", but here there is an overwhelming theme of tragedy. I suspect that this book will have a very mixed reception, depending on the sympathies of the reader. Personally I found it quite fascinating.

Three stars because Syvie Weil's book has some useful information.

I have the opposite criticism of that of David ONEAL. It would have helped if Sylvie Weil had provided more about her life to make more sense of her many issues with her aunt Simone Weil. In an article in the magazine Forward, Benjamin Ivry says this about At Home with Andre and Simone: "Yet, overall, this strong-willed, incisive memoir is as close as we are likely to get to the real Simone Weil
in her centennial year." In my opinion this statement could only have been written by someone who either has not read the Simone Petrement biography of Simone Weil and Simone Weil's books Gravity and Grace, Oppression and Liberty, and others, or doesn't agree with, doesn't understand, or ignores the Petrement biography that has many quotes from letters and articles and Simone Weil's own writings. Three stars because Syvie Weil's book has some useful information.

A gem of a book
By Kenneth Ring
To be the niece of one of the most famous women of the 20th century, and surely its most revered “martyr”, in addition to being the daughter of one of the world’s greatest mathematicians, a genius in his own right, does not make for an easy life. But Sylvie Weil, Simone Weil’s beloved niece and the daughter of Simone’s brother, André, has provided in her memoir about her extraordinary family, At Home with André and Simone Weil, a very intimate and poignant portrait of what it is like to grow up in such a milieu and the tremendous ambivalence it created in her, she, who looks so much like her illustrious aunt and who even bears a name similar to hers. Yet in drawing this portrait of her two celebrated forebears as well as other members of this very distinguished family – they may have even been distantly related to Marcel Proust – Sylvie herself emerges as a writer of remarkable gifts who clearly deserves to be seen outside of the shadow of her ancestors’ light and appreciated for her own achievements (she has published other books and has received awards and other forms of recognition for her writing).

In any event, she has written a memoir full of wit and pungent observation, giving play both to her imagination and her own Proustian-like recollections of her life with mostly the memory of her aunt, who died the same year Sylvie was born, and her life with her father, who lived to a great age. It is beautifully written, deeply moving, and simply one of the most rewarding memoirs I have encountered in a long time.

Just to leave you with a couple of small samples of the author’s wit, let me end by quoting two brief passages. In the first, Sylvie, as a teenager, has just won an extremely prestigious academic award, which was to be given to her at a ceremony by none other than General de Gaulle. And what did say to Sylvie on this occasion? “He told me: ‘I admired your aunt very much.’ Not a word more, not even ‘Congratulations, Mademoiselle.’ Nothing….Moreover, I knew perfectly well that in London, he had asserted that my aunt, the same one, was completely mad. So much for admiring her.”

The second vignette concerns her father, never known for his politeness. One night, he and his wife were attending a concert when the orchestra suddenly stopped playing because a man in the audience had fallen ill and had to be taken out on a stretcher. After the concert resumed, a few people were still whispering. “André furiously ordered, ‘Quiet!’ A lady turned around indignantly, saying, ‘Didn’t you see? The gentleman died.’ André retorted: ‘So what? There are worse things than dying while listening to Mozart.’”

Such gems are sprinkled throughout this wonderfully crafted memoir about two unforgettable people of historical importance who have been brought back to life by this sometimes contrarious but ultimately very devoted member of the Weil family.
