Satirical Bombardment

World War II is on and Chonkin is imprisoned in this sequal to his extraordinary adventures. Chonkin figures less prominently in this sequal. I think, the major character here is the social system itself. Voinovich does not spare anyone or anything: Joseph Stalin, the Soviet military planning, and the prison system--all are criticized. Bumbling bureaucrats continue to bludner like there was no tomorrow. For example, they capture and execute an honest junior officer as a spy, while the real spy continues to work undisturbed. And the bumbling of this sort is pittance in comparison to what has just gone on--the 1937/38 terror. Most outstanding people have been destroyed on no greater basis than wild accusations and Stalin's paranoia. It turns out that the most potent weapon in the war on the cream of society's crop is a simple pencil! Write an accusation on someone who works hard in his field and has his head in the clouds, not paying attention to politics, and that person is soon arrested and executed. Given this absurd atmosphere of repression and the pressure and fear put on the government by war, Chonkin must languish in prison on suspicion of being a descendant of a noble Russian family which is trying to overthrow the government and open the gates to the Germans!
Voinovich's satire is right on target. This book is funny and educational. If you live in a Western democracy you will, at a minimum, reap one important benefit from reading this--you will appreciate even more what you have in your country today. I assigned a number of Russian writers in my Modern Russian Politics class last year, and this is exactly what the impact was. Read Voinovich--his books are humorous and different.

Soviet Satire at its Best!

You must read "The Life & Extraordinary Adventures of Private Ivan Chonkin" prior to reading this book. This is essentially part II of that book.

This is some of the funniest and most biting Soviet satire I've ever read. Voinovich masterfully leads the reader through the chaos that was the Soviet Union. In my opinion, "Pretender to the Throne" is the better half of this two book series.

I highly recommend these two books to all Russian Literature readers! They are simply an essential part of any Russian Literature library. Northwestern University Press has, once again, published a fine book. All their books have durable, attractive covers and fine quality paper.

Very good satire!

"Pretender to the trone" is the sequel to "The Extraordinary Adventures of Private Iwan Chonkin", and almost as funny (in a grim way)! Those who enjoyed "Iwan Chonkin" should also read this sequel. In the Russian edition I read, they were joined in one volume.

About the Author
Hans Jonas(1903-1993) was the Alvin Johnson Professor of Philosophy at the New School for Social Research from 1955 to 1976. He was born and educated in Germany where he studied underEdmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, and Rudolf Bultmann. He left Germany in 1933 and lived in Palestine and England before coming to North America. He influenced ethical philosophy--especially bioethics--and the study of gnosticism.

I really like this book!!! I have about 50 pages to go and dread finishing it. I love the great films of the late sixties and seventies- Coppola, Scorcese, Ashby, Kubrick, and this book looks behind the scenes of the machine that produced them and the creative people who made them. Pay Any Price !

The price you see quoted above may seem high for a used or older book, but when The Gist of Mencken was published in 1990, it was only in a limited edition that had poor distribution. You are lucky to see it available at any price, and once you purchase it, you'll be glad you did. This is a >must have< book for several reasons.

Ms. DuBasky's book is the ideal introduction to H. L. Mencken for younger readers and those who are curious to see why some of us rave about what a brilliant writer he was. There are, of course, many fine collections of his writing, but those just starting out with Mencken may find some pieces in other collections a tad prolix. For example, after seeing the recent Ken Burns series lauding The Roosevelts, I was curious to see what Mencken had to say about Theodore, so I consulted "Roosevelt: An Autopsy," a chapter found in Prejudices: Second Series. Since this essay was based on a book review, it begins with a three-page general discussion of the merits of various biographies, including Woodrow Wilson's biography of George Washington. In The Gist of Mencken, however, there is an abundance of entries which focus solely on Major Roosevelt, and I was surprised to learn that Mencken considered him to be "the most interesting man who ever infested the White House" [pg. 410], and the only president who "has ever welcomed men of letters at the White House" [pg.416]. This book thus serves as a handy reference to Mencken's core beliefs, and it is a corrective to the common misinformation that Mencken was merely a bigot and an old crank.

Mencken's values and observations were far more nuanced and subtle than contemporary critics allow. For example, I enjoy tormenting my right-wing friends (who assume that Mencken was a doctrinaire laissez-faire libertarian who would be a card-carrying member of the Cato Institute today) with a paragraph found here in which Mencken states unequivocally that "stock market speculation is essentially anti-social and ought to be put down." As with all of us, Mencken disliked taxes, but his proposal was "to soak all speculative profits on a heavy scale, beginning, say, with a flat 50% tax on those made within two or three months, and running to 90% or even 100% on those made within a week. Certainly it would be to the public interest to separate speculative profits very sharply from investment profits, and to the intended disadvantage of the former" [pg.261]. Here we have a man writing in 1936 with a practical solution to the present-day problem of high-frequency electronic speed trading which threatens to destabilize the markets with flash crashes such as those which occurred in 2010 and 2015.

And there are thousands of such gems waiting for you in this book.

It's important to emphasize that this is not merely a collection of Mencken's popular aphorisms (e.g., "Every decent man is ashamed of the government he lives under"), because the book contains an abundance of entries lasting from 200 to 250 words. No seasoned Mencken devotee can ever live happily without a copy of The Gist of Mencken, because there is material here not found in any other collection. It contains excerpts which originally appeared in Mencken's least popular books, such as Treatise on Right and Wrong, items from the Baltimore Evening Sun, selections from the magazines which Mencken edited, "The Smart Set" and "The American Mercury," as well as Mencken's letters, speeches and unpublished manuscripts. There is also material from other periodicals such as "The American Hebrew and Jewish Tribune," "The Bohemian," "The Partisan Review," and "Vanity Fair." Other gleanings come from the prefaces Mencken wrote for books by other authors: A House of Pomegranates by Oscar Wilde; Little Eyolf by Henrik Ibsen; The Lost Art of Profanity by Burges Johnson; Tales of Mean Streets by Arthur Morrison (click on that last link and you'll find the book available as a free download from the Kindle Store). You simply won't discover much of this material anywhere else, and surely no real Mencken enthusiast could bear to miss any of it!

Mayo DuBasky (née Juanita Ruth Griggs; 1923 − 2007) worked in the Congressional Reference Division of the Library of Congress, and so she served at the pleasure of U. S. congressmen. A representative or senator would often call, asking for a good quote on a given topic to use in a speech, and it was Mayo DuBasky's job to furnish such a quote. She knew that Mencken was a good source for a sapient and witty observation, so she began collecting passages from Mencken on file cards. After retiring from the Library of Congress, she took her cards with her and simply compiled them into this book. (I know who owns the file cards, if anyone is interested in them.)

No book is perfect, and since this book is pretty much a homemade effort, there are a few flaws in it. A quote on page 55 is duplicated on page 337; a quote on page 388 also appears on page 482. You may find a few lapses in the index -- occasionally a name is not cited in the index if it is not the topic of an entry -- but what an index! At 67 pages long, it's like a Mencken concordance! If only the major publishers hired people to compile indexes this thorough! It's also worth noting that the book is solidly bound and with good paper. The only hesitation you may have in buying a used copy is that the pages will surely have notes and checks on them.

The person who would benefit most from this book, however, is someone who thinks he knows Mencken. There is such a variety of thought and opinion contained here, that it becomes obvious that Mencken cannot be pigeonholed. Whenever you think you have Mencken figured out, he surprises you with a perspective you never considered.

This book is essential for Mencken lovers. It contains a huge number of mostly obscure Mencken quotes. These are not just the pithy zingers for which Mencken is famous, but many more lengthy items. Indispensible.

Kenneth Silverman is professor of emeritus of English at NYU. He is the author of biographies of Edgar Allen Poe, Houdini, and Samuel F. Great but nonessential research

I am very impressed by the amount of research the author has accomplished. As far as I know, he has found and used sources noone else has mentioned before. Yet, I find most of this new information nonessential and, at times, unnecessary. Although he seems to be a great admirer of Cage, he doesn't give the impression that he is familiar with the essence of the arguments. I got the impression that he has collected the biographical material, put all in chronological order and composed a narrative which cannot really hide this mechanical organization in the background: you often read a somewhat detailed description of a work (without much focus on the ideas behind it), followed by the introduction of a person who became a friend of Cage (with no significant role in his creativity) or by some gossipy information. The titles of the sections reflect this mechanical chronology: "Health; Xenia; New Quarrel with Teeny," for example. Another example: if the author has found a letter to or from Cage, that letter gets mentioned at its place in the chronology no matter how irrelevant or unnecessary it may be.

This book can serve as further reading material for those who want to know a bit more about Cage (mostly as a person). For those who are looking for a better biography of John Cage, I would recommend David Revill's "The Roaring Silence" (his approach is not very objective and there seem to be some minute errors in chronology but the information is much more relevant). Apart from Cage's own "Silence" and "A Year from Monday," I would highly recommend "Conversing with Cage" by Richard Kostelanetz: it is a book compiled from many interviews given by Cage and contains lots of good information (in Cage's own words).

This guy won a Pulitzer?

It's hard to understand from this book how Mr. Silverman ever won a Pulitzer. This is a flaccidly written, amazingly uninteresting biography of one of America's greatest and most influential artistic thinkers. I have the following specific objections (in no particular order):

(1) An overly leering tone. The author seems to have an adolescent fascination with sexual matters. Most adult readers, however, don't really want to know about individuals' pubic area moles or choice of specific sexual positions.

(2) Nothing in this book convinces me that the author has ever heard a single note of Cage's music -- or any other music, for that matter. (Of course I'm sure he must have, but it doesn't come through in his book.) There is nothing indicating any depth of musical understanding, or even a particular love of music on the author's part.

(3) Too much interest in journalistic reviews. I haven't counted to prove the point, but I suspect more words are devoted to describing what critics wrote about Cage's music than to the music itself.

(4) An apparent unwillingness to understand anything remotely technical. At various places in the book, the author refers to semi-technical engineering and music matters with a baffled tone more appropriate for an anti-intellectual making fun of "big words" than for an NYU professor.

(5) There is little if anything new in this book. Nothing suggestive of reflective probing or careful original research. Why did it need to be written?

Sex but not Music

Silverman's book offers very little about Cage's music or the circumstances surrounding the music. He leaves out important stories such as the reason for the creation of the prepared piano was that Cage wanted to write a percussion ensemble to accompany dance but, did not have the space for the instruments - he could however prepare a piano and have an entire percussion ensemble at his fingertips. Also, while Cage was in Paris and briefly studied to be an architect, his teacher told him that he must devote himself entirely to architecture if he were to pursue it. Cage decide he could not devote himself to architecture but, could devote himself to music. This is a life altering event in Cage's life and it gets a vague sentence in this book. Has Silverman done any research? As I read, I continually felt I knew much more about Cage than he did. Though he is very good about pulling absolutely mundane details of Cage's life from letters and other accounts.

Call me crazy but, a biography about a musician/composer (or any other artist for that matter) should have a major portion of it devoted to their work...because that was THEIR LIFE!

Silverman focuses more on who was sleeping with who than Cage's music. Granted this aspect of Cage's life has been little written about.

If you want a great biography on Cage - The Roaring Silence: John Cage: A Life. If you only want tangential stories with no substance about music, then definitely buy this book.

A Man Who Crossed Disciplines and Abetted Creativity

Virginia Spencer Carr is not only a fine biographer in this recounting of the life of the ubiquitous Paul Bowles, she also was a friend of a fascinating man who touched many aspects of the arts and made his mark in multiple areas of creation. Some of those areas were in his friendships and interpersonal critiquing of famous artists such as WH Auden, Benjamin Britten, Ned Rorem, Aaron Copland, Tennessee Williams, Virgil Thompson, Carson McCullers, and Gertrude Stein. His life began as a poet, progressed through years as a composer of music that never quite found its place, and ended as a novelist of such impressive books as 'The Sheltering Sky', 'Let It Com Down', 'The Spider's House' etc.

Carr takes all this into account and serves it up with a thorough amount of information about Bowles' carefully guarded private life. Married to lesbian author Jane Bowles, Paul Bowles was one of those sub rosa gay artists who managed to bond with many other great gay artists in a time when such interplay was hardly condoned. Carr manages to give insight as to how these people learned form each other (for instance the infamous February House in New York where many of them lived communally for a while); she does this without resorting to gossip or sensationalism, respecting the fact that writing biography includes an obligation to yield a viable picture of the subject.

Bowles spent much of his life in Tangiers (this is where Carr first met him) and most of his successful novels and writings were influenced by his observations of the clashes between the 'tourists' who visit Morocco yet never connects with the realites and idiosyncrasies of that mysteriously magical place. Much the same could be said about the ambiguous persona of Paul Bowles. How much of his life was due to his inherent talents and how much was due to his integral interplay with the artists of his entourage? Carr poses some fine explanations in this very readable biography of a man who remains an enigma. Grady Harp. July 05

what happened?

this book, we are told, was originally a manuscript of 1,308 pages. i mention this because one comes upon paragraphs here and there that seem part of a longer work. the first chapters are by far the best with the narrative smooth and the early years "fleshed out". however, when bowles' artistic carreer begins so do the problems, which may have to do with the tremendous job of cutting out 3/4 of the original manuscript.

the book contains no new important information or point of view but there are some new details here and there ( mainly about press runs, money matters and sexual partners).

ms. carr travelled 13 times to tangier for her research, arranged for bowles' medical operations in the u.s.a. and had her subject as a house guest for 3 months. however, bowles' literary executor refused to authorize this biography. we are not told why.

A Solid Effort

Bowles is an odd sort. He rose to fame and fortune in an artistic era when it was possible to know only 5 people in New York City and, if they were the right people, make a literary career from them. He literally slept his way to the top, bedding musical and literary celebrities from NYC to Berlin, Hollywood, London and Morocco. Isherwood, we are told, named his famous Sally Bowles after him. He was Aaron Copeland's lover for years. He ran in high artisitc circles, including Gore Vidal, Peggy Guggenheim, and Tennessee Williams. He got most of his commissions from them. His wife, Jane Bowles, ran in even higher circles, bedding grand heiresses, including Woolworth and Reynolds, who bankrolled her theatre productions and pulled strings to see her fiction published. Finally, Jane went off her rocker, jealous, evidently, over her husband's sustained success. Having moved in the gay aristocracy of the 30s, Bowles's attracted the next generation of drug and sex fiends, including Ginsburg and Burroughs, after establishing residence in North Africa. His wife became a rather hopeless alcoholic whose literary production was reduced to a trickleuntil her early death in Spain. Although a success in virtually every artistic endeavor, he seems to have failed to make enough money to retire gracefully. The author tells us that he was reduced to teaching fiction writing in old age, no doubt a rather serious comedown for such a lofty gentlemen, who once traveled first class, and kept a household of servants, sexual and otherwise. One wonders why he ever joined the communist party, given his taste for the high life. One gathers that Bowles lived long enough to see the world change dramatically. It's a story of a closed world. Bowles would write a story, pass it to an old friend, have it published, and then see it reviewed by an old lover. These guys backed each other up. He wrote music for most of Tennessee William's productions, while Tennessee would review Bowles' novels for the NY Times. They traveled with letters of introduction, staying in grand mansions and palaces as house guests. It was indeed a time when the going was good. The biographer herself was once a friend and a patron who provided assistance when Bowles was in need of medical assistance. He has been well-treated by this admiring scholar, who writes well, if not critically. Bowles had what was once known as a charmed life.
