About the Author
D. Antoinette Handy (1931-2002) was a flutist, music educator, and arts administrator. She was a humanities Fellow at the University of North Carolina and Duke University. She retired as Director of the Music Program, National Endowment for the Arts. Her previous Scarecrow Press books are Black Women in American Bands and Orchestras and Black Conductors.

Concise and informative telling

Antoinette Handy's book tells not only the story of the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, but also conveys informative insight to the beginning and significance of the school where it all began - Piney Woods Country Life School. At a mere six chapters, Handy provides an historical arc which includes a prologue, information about conditions and opportunities for African Americans, background of the school's founder, Dr. Laurence Clifton Jones, the importance of education in the Piney Woods area, and finally the history and an epilogue of the band. Handy's telling is obviously well researched, drawing from historical documents, as well as personal interviews with several former members.

I would suggest this book as a primer for the deeper telling of the band. The time line and major events related to the ensemble are told, but there are not specific stories told of - for example - life on the road, dealing with Jim Crow laws, interaction between members, fraternizing with fans, the USO trip, etc. For a more detailed account I suggest Sherrie Tucker's book, "Swing Shift" (read Handy's book first, then Tucker's). There is also a documentary about the band simply entitled "The International Sweethearts of Rhythm". It was produced by Jezebel Productions; if interested you'll have to search the Internet for contact info.

The accomplishments of these ladies deserve telling, and Handy's book is a good place to start.

This first volume in a series covering the twentieth century by decade is written for junior and senior high school students looking for a brief overview of the events and people of the 1950s. (The volume covering the 1960s will be published in September.) Thirteen alphabetically arranged chapters ranging from the arts to education, government and politics, law, and sports are consistently formatted and supplemented with black-and-white photographs. The major value of the series will be as documentation of the time period.

Each chapter begins with a relevant chronology and overview and concludes with short biographies of newsmakers, deaths, and a bibliography of important books published in the 1950s. The general bibliography in the back of the volume, which is divided into the same 13 sections as the book, lists current titles. Chapters on the arts, media, sports, and fashion include award winners for each year of the decade. Topics are covered in brief, easily understood sections that will be useful to lower-reading-level students. Sidebars offer additional information on such events and phenomena as Nixon's Checkers speech, the Hollywood blacklist, bomb shelters, and TV dinners. The first chapter is a chronology of world events, those occurring outside of the U.S. However, it includes Eisenhower's 1952 election, but not his reelection (both events are to be found in the "Government and Politics" chronology).

The major focus is naturally on the U.S. but worldwide events are mentioned in the analysis. Most topics are easily found in the appropriate chapter from references in the extensive index, but some (e.g., the McCarthy hearings and Brown v. Board of Education) are scattered over several chapters. Students might be interested in more illustrations in the "Fashion" chapter, which, in addition to clothing, covers architecture and car design.

Middle- and high-school libraries that own the Time-Life series, This Fabulous Century, will find some overlap in coverage, but this new series complements the older one. The Time-Life books have a greater reliance on illustrations with more of a focus on popular culture, although they contain lengthier coverage of Joseph McCarthy and his hearings. Facts On File's Day by Day series is not limited to the U.S. but covers world affairs. It has more of an emphasis on politics and gives less coverage to popular culture. The Gale volumes offer libraries coverage of much-researched topics in one series written especially for teens.

This anthology presents a wide variety of interesting info on all the decades that I used as one of my primary resources for information to do a project for my junior history class on the 1950's and 1960's. The writing is clear and concise but also keeps it interesting... I highly recommend these books!

Contrary to what the title suggests, this is not so much a sampler of Lem's writings as an introduction to and overview of the Polish writer's work. Swirski, a lecturer at McGill University (Canada), opens with an essay summarizing Lem's career and the major themes of his writings. Then comes a long 1992 interview with Lem, ``Reflections on Literature, Philosophy and Science.'' Lem contributes a retrospective essay primarily devoted to examining the accuracy of his 1964 book, Summa Technologiae, an essay in futurology in which he forecast (among other things) computer virtual reality. Another interview from 1994 consists of Lem's written responses to various broad questions on his thought and writings. The overall effect is to give an excellent, if very condensed, view of Lem's special concerns, particularly on the relationships between fiction and the real world. He comments in detail, for instance, on several writers who have attempted to portray Poland during the Nazi occupation, finding most to have missed the mark (Jerzy Kosinski in The Painted Bird overplays the peasants' sexual promiscuity, for instance). His observations on the ephemeral nature of much political satire (from Huxley's Brave New World to the Strugatsky brothers' attacks on Stalinism) draw attention to the rarely examined question of the place of the predictive element in fiction. While he has kept at arm's length from popular science fiction, Lem remains one of the few writers of fiction who is deeply conversant with scientific thought and who makes a point of getting his science right. His interest in philosophy is also genuine and wide-reaching, as numerous comments indicate. Another chapter on Lem

The book is unusual, no doubt, for a "reader;" actually it's hardly a Lem reader as such. It consists of a long critical introduction/analysis plus a couple of long interviews on everything under the sun and a translation of a major (and mordantly Lemian) piece on computers, virtual reality, and its ab/uses.

Much as I enjoyed it, I liked another chapter on Lem much more, this one is in another book by Swirski, From Lowbrow to Nobrow. Entire chapter six is on Lem's Chain of Chance, and it's brilliant, written more like a cross between philosophical journalism and a reader's guide, check it, it's a classic

Difficult but worthwhile...

A lot of information for being approx. 150 pages as every single page contains pertinent content. (In other words, there is not one single wasted line or sentence.) Very strong writing with a nice flair as it focuses on the interdisciplinary side of Lem's novels, rather than being just an ordinary literary review. The interviews with Lem are also thought provoking; since it allows Lem's "voice" to be "heard". However, it is a little dense and at some points may be difficult to decipher exactly what the author or Lem is trying to say as both use vocabulary that is not quite "layman's terms". Still, overall it does give good insight to Lem and is a useful introduction to Lem's works. In addition, the author's focus (how literature interacts with science and society)is a breath of fresh air compared to what is usually circulating around in the guise of literary criticism!

Brilliant, challenging, innovative, thought-provoking...

I did not know anything about Lem before--this is a great and utterly challenging introduction to just about anything that Lem wrote about: contemporary culture, literature, science, philosophy. I admire the interviewer: it must have been a difficult task of arranging and editing (and translating) these talks. I read this book and bought a few Lem novels--what a treat! I recommend A Stanislaw Lem Reader to all who love literature and are of reflective nature.

Excellent for Students of Hegel

This book is great if you want to follow all of Phenomenology step-by-step and get clarification on Hegel's dense language. The author's thesis is that Phenomenology follows a strict process of a three-part dialectical movement in all of its sections, starting from common sense and ending at absolute knowledge. I believe this is an admirable approach, for it seems pretty clear when reading Hegel, that he is following some sort of structure, just that it is sometimes hard to figure out what that structure is. Phenomenology is definitely one of the most challenging works of the entire Hegelian corpus, probably due to it being written relatively early as well as the volume and complexity of the material Hegel wanted to relay. Since without understanding Phenomenology one cannot hope to accomplish any kind of complete understanding of Hegel, an enlightening guide through its jungle becomes crucial. I believe this book is such guide.

My only complaint (if I can call it that) against this book is that it is following its thesis at times too closely. Sometimes even the author has to admit that there is little support for his interpretation in Hegel himself. Seems like Hegelian thought at times soared above the simple three-part moving system and the author was unwilling to follow it there, reluctant to abandon his own construct.

Apart from that, I think this book is a great aid for those trying to make sense of Phenomenology and advance their understanding of Hegel.
