The translations provided are accurate and complete. Anyone who has a voice studio or seeks to improve their own performance should consider this a must-have!

Writing with his Cuban heart on his sleeve, the legendary reed player and composer of jazz and traditional Cuban music is passionate as he discusses everything from the importance of learning to read music to cellist Yo-Yo Ma's thoughts on communism. The narrative moves quickly as D'Rivera (b. 1948) bops back and forth between his life as a musical prodigy in Cuba, stories of musical greats like Celia Cruz and Tito Puente, and his international travels. And while most of the book is upbeat and humorous, the passages where D'Rivera recalls his 1981 defection from Cuba and the people he left behind are especially poignant. D'Rivera is openly critical of Castro's beliefs and actions, what he sees as the faults of communism, the political systems of Latin America and any government that strives to curb artistic freedom and expression. He liberally inserts quotations, letters and extended passages written by friends, acquaintances and fellow musicians to add different perspectives on his own stories (which often seem to set the record straight). D'Rivera's knowledge of music and recording is readily apparent, but his penchant for naming everyone he ever played with can become tedious. About the Author
Paquito D'Rivera was born in 1948 in Havana, Cuba. His celebrated recordings include the Grammy-winning Historia del Soldado (2003), Brazilian Dreams (2003), Live at the Blue Note (2001), and Portraits of Cuba (1996). D'Rivera is celebrating his fiftieth year as a performer in 2004 with concerts throughout the world and culminating with a special celebration at Carnegie Hall in January 2005. He lives in North Bergen, New Jersey.

Instant Jazz Classic!

Paquito d'Rivera is an undisputed virtuoso on saxophone and clarinet in both the jazz and classical worlds. One of the great innovators of Latin jazz in modern times, Paquito has always been at the forefront of the movement. Unless you are familiar with his random writings in numerous publications, most people were unaware of Paquito's talent of prose in Spanish and English. After penning his novel, Oh, La Habana! and the Spanish version of his memoirs, he has now released his memoirs in English or his anti-biography as he prefers to call it. Much like his lyrical improvisational style, Paquito d'Rivera's book is filled with his trademark humor and wit, bounces between decades here and abroad and includes personal antidotes and stories as well as those of his closest friends and collaborators. Destined to becoming one of the great jazz memoirs of all time, and definitely a must read for this year's music book releases, My Sax Life is highly recommended.

Paquito talks of Castro's censure which suppressed British and American' influences in Cuban music. The censure prevented Cuban musicians from playing anything resembling jazz or rock and roll during a period of several years during the 60's and 70's, depending on the Cuban tyrant's whims. Various stories throughout the book tell of a musician's search for artistic freedom and expression under the tight grip of Castro's police state censors, while struggling on in the daily life of a typical Cuban in search of consumer goods. Paquito also tells of Cuba's restrictions of travel on suspected dissidents that could potentially defect. D'Rivera's knowledge of music is apparent and his ability to name everybody he ever played with is impressive. Although his writing is somewhat hard to follow, it is infused with zest and good humor and it is a statement by an artist on his art and his life.

This is more a literary biography than anything else. While James Gunn hits the high points of Asimov's life, they don't get much attention. What does get page space is Asimov's writing. Gunn does not linger over the non-fiction, but he summarizes most of Asimov's important fiction, including several of his short stories and novellas, the Foundation and Robot novels, and The Gods Themselves. If you haven't read much Asimov and think you might like to, this is not the book for you, because it gives away the plots. If you have read a lot of Asimov, this shouldn't be a problem. You may even find, as I did, that you remembered certain books or stories but had forgotten who had written them. For scholars, Gunn includes a chronology of Isaac Asimov's life, a checklist of his works and a short bibliography of works about him. The book has a moderately detailed index. Gunn also includes the transcript of an interview he did with Asimov in 1979, when he was preparing the first edition of Asimov: the Foundations of Science Fiction, which won a Hugo Award. Several times in the interview, Gunn proposes theories about Asimov's works and Asimov says things like 'You're perfectly right' and 'I think perhaps you're right' and 'Well, now, I'm glad you said that, because this is not something I have myself spent time thinking of, but I think you're right now that you present it.' Unless Isaac Asimov was being terribly polite, and that doesn't seem likely, he believed that James Gunn understood him very well and agreed with Gunn's analyses. This can be good or bad. If you like the confrontational, sensational, muckraking sort of biography, any approval by the biographee is suspect. However, if you're looking for accuracy, it's nice. (Green Man Review)

James Gunn is a retired professor of English at the University of Kansas and Director of the Center for the Study of Science Fiction. He has written twelve novels, five collections of short stories, and "Alternate Worlds: The Illustrated History of Science Fiction".

About the Author
One of the twentieth century s master prose stylists, Vladimir Nabokov was born in St. Petersburg in 1899. He studied French and Russian literature at Trinity College, Cambridge, then lived in Berlin and Paris, where he launched a brilliant literary career. In 1940 he moved to the United States, and achieved renown as a novelist, poet, critic and translator. He taught literature at Wellesley, Stanford, Cornell, and Harvard. In 1961 he moved to Montreux, Switzerland, where he died in 1977.

Stephen Jan Parker, a Cornell PhD, is Associate Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Kansas. A National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow, he traveled to the Soviet Union to consult with Repin scholars. He is the co-founder of the Vladimir Nabokov Society and is now editor and publisher of "The Vladimir Nabokov Research Newsletter."

Gerard de Vries's writings on Nabokov have appeared in "Russian Literature Triquarterly," "Nabokov Studies," "Revue de Litterature Comparee," and "The Nabokovian." Donald Barton Johnson is professor emeritus of Russian at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is the author of "Worlds in Regression: Some Novels of Vladimir Nabokov." Liana Ashenden is a researcher who studies Bosch.

Ellen Pifer is Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Delaware. She is a former president of the International Vladimir Nabokov Society and the author of Nabokov and the Novel.

Toker is Professor of English at The Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

Alice Guy Blaché was not only the world's first female director, but in 1896, she became the first of either sex to direct a fictional film. As the first director with the Gaumont Company in Paris, Alice Guy Blaché served as an influential figure in French film history, making more than 300 films, including some of the earliest sound subjects from the turn of the century. She continued her career in the United States, founding the Solax Company in 1910, and producing and directing 350 more films.

Complementing the text are reprints of contemporary articles on Alice Guy Blaché from the American trade press, a reminiscence by her daughter, a brief evaluation of the career of her husband, Herbert Blaché and a complete filmography.

Amazing memoir by inventor of the movies

This woman invented the movies in paris in 187something. She was a secretary at a famous photostudio. Her short films became very successful. She went to the us in the early 20 century and founded her OWN movie production company in fort lee, just accross from manhattan. For a couple of years she was the most successful woman in the us. When the movies went to hollywood in 1915... she did not quite make the transition and after a divorce from her husband ( who was a cameraman turned director) she went back to france. A forgotten part of film hisory and an amusing must read.
