In this first scholarly book in English on Miron Białoszewski (1922–1983), Joanna Niżyńska illuminates the elusive prose of one of the most compelling and challenging postwar Polish writers. Niżyńska’s study, exemplary in its use of theoretical concepts, introduces English-language readers to a preeminent voice of Polish literature. Niżyńska explores how a fusion of seemingly irreconcilable qualities, such as the traumatic and the everyday, imbues Białoszewski’s writing with its idiosyncratic appeal. 

Białoszewski’s A Memoir of the Warsaw Uprising (1977, revised 1991) describes the Poles’ heroic struggle to liberate Warsaw from Nazi occupation in 1944 as harrowing yet ordinary. His later prose represents everyday life permeated by traces of the traumatic. Niżyńska closely examines the topic of autobiography and homosexuality, showing how Białoszewski discloses his homosexuality but, paradoxically, renders it inconspicuous by hiding it in plain sight.

How are our memories, our narratives, and our intelligence interrelated? What can artificial intelligence and narratology say to each other? In this pathbreaking study by an expert on learning and computers, Roger C. Schank argues that artificial intelligence must be based on real human intelligence, which consists largely of applying old situations - and our narratives of them - to new situations in less than obvious ways. To design smart machines, Schank therefore investigated how people use narratives and stories, the nature and function of those narratives, and the connection of intelligence to both telling and listening. As Schank explains, "We need to tell someone else a story that describes our experiences because the process of creating the story also creates the memory structure that will contain the gist of the story for the rest of our lives. People's primary way of learning is through hearing stories.

I read this book for one of my instructional design classes - which focuses on how people learn - it is one of the most interesting books that I have ever read. It gives you alot to think about. I think the best way to learn about a non-fiction book is through a series of quotes of what the person found interesting. So here are some quotes from the book:

"In effect, once she decided to see their situation as one of betrayal, she didn't need to see it any other way. Aspects of the relationship between the two people unrelated to betrayal, or that contradicted the notion of betrayal, were forgotten. Seeing a particular story as an instance of a more general and universally known story causes the teller of the story to forget the differences between the particular and the general.
....In other words, the concept of betrayal becomes what she knows about this situation. It controls her memory of the situation so that new evidence of betrayal is more likely to get admitted into memory than contradictory evidence."(P.148)

"...Is this relationship, however, an example of betrayal? Certainly, the teller relates the story so that betrayal is an accurate description. But betrayal was used as a skeleton story around which the actual story was constructed.
In other words, by using a skeleton story for betrayal, the teller could only construct a story of betrayal. All other aspects of the story were left out. But why, for example, could the teller not have told a story of "devotion"? Only small changes would be needed to make this a story of devotion - a statement that he still loves her and hopes that she will return to her former self or one that shows he values and will support her in her role as mother. ....We want to see the situations that we encounter in terms that are describable to others. We only have a short time in which to tell these stories. So, even if the fit with those stories is not exact, seeing and describing complex stories in terms of standard stories provides an easy shorthand method for communication." (P.148-149)

"The key point here is that once we find a belief and connected story, no further processing, no search for other beliefs need be done. We rarely look to understand a story in more than one way." (p.73)

"The skeletons we use indicate our point of view. Storytelling causes us to adapt a point of view. With this adaption comes a kind of self-definition, however. We are the stories we tell. ...As we come to rely upon certain skeletons to express what has happened to us, we become incapable of seeing the world in any other way. The skeletons we use cause specific episodes to conform to one another. The more a given skeleton is used, the more stories it helps form begin to coher in memory. Consequently, we develop consistent, and rather inflexible points of view." (P.170)

"An incident is remembered in terms of how it is seen in the first place. That is, labeling is in many respects an arbitrary process. ...And, of course, even that last categorization is arbitrary since one person might characterize the victim as being blond, while the other might characterise him as being fat." (P.222)

"We would like to imagine that we learn from the stories of others, but we really only do so when the stories we hear relate to beliefs that we feel rather unsure of, ones that we are flirting with at the moment, so to speak. When we are wondering, consciously or unconsciously, about the truth, about how to act or understand some aspect of the world, then the evidence provided by others can be of some use." (P.78)

"A good memory, then means an attentive labeling facility during processing or you aren't going to remember what you don't find interesting, so the more that interests you the better memory you are likely to have." (P.223-224)

"Yet what we learn is still entirely up to us. No one teaches us how to index after all. We make up our own way of seeing the world,..." (P.113)

"Knowing a great deal about a subject means being able to detect differences that will reflect themselves in differences in indexing. In other words, intelligence depends on clever indexing. Our expert is intelligent about military history. He sees nuances where others would not. He analyzes new stories well enough to be able to relate them to old stories that might not obviously be the same." (P.113)

good prevails.

Life in post-revolutionary Russia was no picnic with mass starvation and lawlessness. This book focuses on a guy who is trying to get the cement factory working again but finds himself fighting one committee after another and their role seems to be only to throw up roadblocks. There is much sadness but in the end, good prevails.

Paradigm of Socialist Realism

In Cement, a classic of socialist realism and an exemplar of the production novel, Fyodor Gladkov portrays the sociological effects of Communism on the inhabitants of a mountain town after the Russian Revolution as they attempt to rebuild their lives under the new economic policies of the Soviet Union. Written to a master plot that controls the most critical elements of the story, the novel illustrates major tenets of Soviet ideology. Task fulfillment is combined with the maturation of the positive hero as he transcends his selfish interests and finds self-fulfillment in the collective cause of Communism. Gleb Chumalov, having distinguished himself in Civil War battles, returns home to discover things have changed dramatically. The cement factory is idle, petit bourgeois values remain, and the local officials are not committed to a reopening of the factory. Moreover, his wife, Dasha, is now the leader of the local Women's Section of the Communist Party, and has no interest in continuing their marriage. Chumalov perceives that the battle for communist survival must now be fought on the economic front and he redirects his energies to accomplish this task. Overcoming worker apathy, red tape, and sabotage, Chumalov mobilizes the proletariat, challenges the bureaucrats, and succeeds in achieving the reopening of the factory on the fourth anniversary of the October Revolution. In a speech marking the completion of the task, Chumalov envisions a wonderful life for future generations under communism. In further development of the motif that sacrifice will lead to a common good, Serge contemplates life after his purge from the Communist Party because of his Menshevik ties: " he, Serge Ivagin, as a personality did not exist. There was only the Party and he was an insignificant item in this great organism."[1]

Katerina Clark suggests that although Cement, in many ways, exemplifies the prototypical Soviet production novel, largely due to the fact that its plot and positive heroes were imitated more than any other in Soviet fiction, especially in the 1940s when Gladkov was director of the Literary Institute, it is better viewed as an embryonic form of such novels. She concedes that Cement, written in 1925 before Stalin's rise to power, did indeed include much Pravda rhetoric, especially the theme that the fight for communist survival must be redirected to the economic front. She argues, however, that unlike the conventional socialist realist novel, Gladkov uses language and imagery of several nonpartisan highbrow literary schools of thought. Gladkov's opulent prose was repeatedly criticized, and he rewrote the novel several times in response to his critics. Notwithstanding the alterations, the hero image he projected in Gleb Chumalov remained in tact, and became a convention for later Soviet realist novels. In Clark's view, Cement demonstrates that Stalinist culture was influenced by a variety of preexisting elements and was not something that was handed down solely by the dictator himself.[2]

Sex, love, and Bolshevism

The 1920s was a great decade for Soviet literature: the works published during this era are thematically- and ideologically-diverse. Yes, there are better-written novels that came out during this period. Nevertheless, Gladkov's Cement is under-rated. I find it fun to read and re-read (which is critical, since I end up teaching it a lot) and it's definitively one of the best vehicles for getting at the tensions that plagued the Bolsheviks in the early years. Pairing this with Abram Room's film, Bed and Sofa, is a great way to address questions of gender in the early Soviet Union.

A Story Source Book!

I loved this book! As a professional storyteller, this book is an invaluable tool. It provides information ranging from how to choose age-appropriate stories to successfully dealing with "problem" adults and situations. It is written in easy-to-understand language and even provides templates for puppets, flannel board story pieces, etc. I recommend this source book for anyone working with children, whether just starting out or a seasoned veteran.

Good introduction to planning story programs

The only problem is I have been a storytelling librarian for over 30 years and most of the material- stories, rhymes, techniques- isn't new to me. I found a few new-to-me ideas though and I can vouch for the book that there is plenty of solid useful material. I wish I had this book when I was starting out as a children's librarian. It would have saved me a lot of time!

In 1958, when Blatt emigrated to Israel, he sent the story of his incarceration and escape from Sobibor to a notable Auschwitz survivor. The names Auschwitz, Treblinka and Dachau had by then become symbols of the horrors of the Holocaust. But the concentration camp at Sobibor was another site where thousands of Jews had been killed, so Blatt must have been horrified when this survivor wrote in response to his manuscript, "`You have a tremendous imagination. I've never heard of Sobibor and especially not of Jews revolting there.'" Forty years later Sobibor's existence is no longer in question. But even today it is a camp shrouded in mystery, in large part, as Blatt points out, because "very little official documentation" survives of Sobibor's existence or operation--this memoir is one of the few eyewitness accounts. Through first-person narrative and reconstructed dialogue, Blatt describes with chilling objectivity the German occupation of his hometown of Izbica, Poland; early Nazi roundups; the transportation of Jews to Sobibor; his own internment there; the inmate revolt that followed on the footsteps of Nazi defeats by the Russians; and finally his flight to and from his hometown. Although parts of this story were printed elsewhere and have been incorporated into Richard Rashke's Escape from Sobibor as well as a 1987 CBS documentary of the same name, this is Blatt's first full-length account and the result of 40 years of work. Blatt's story is a powerfully written memorial to Sobibor's victims.

This is a personal story of an amazing rebellion in a death camp. Because it is so detailed it grips the reader with empathy and understanding. The book was written some years after Toivi's escape from Sobibor and its dangerous aftermath, but his memories were kept alive by his determination to tell this story and by his contact with other survivors.

This book is totally riveting

This book is phenomenal. I could not put it down until I finished it. I was expecting the worst part of the book to be about what was done in Sobibor. But to me, it wasn't. What was even worse to me, was what happened after the escape. I thought people would be honoring him as a hero for escaping. Instead, people were STILL trying to turn him in to the Nazis--after everything he had been through. And still a kid, for crying out loud. But nothing else compared, to me, to what happened at the very end of the book. The Germans were overthrown, and the Russians in control, so he should have been safe. But no, that is STILL not enough for some people. Now the Polish townspeople are ready to finish off what the Nazis started. Absolutely unbelievable! There were also parts in it that were very touching. When the German took Stefan out in the woods to shoot him, and then told him to run, while he shot in the air. And lots of people risked their lives to help. But then others would rather turn you in than look at you. What horrible psychological warfare for people, not knowing who they could trust, when they asked for help. This war was so brutal for so many different peoples.

This book is totally riveting. I'm reminded of one of the interviews for the movie "Uprising." Where one of the survivors asked the director of the movie if he thinks this same kind of thing could happen again, and the director said, ''I hope not.'' And the survivor said that he thought it could. After reading books like this on what DID happen in WW2, I believe he is right. This COULD happen again. When you read about all the people who turned on others, and some of the atrocities committed. And Stalin and Hitler were NOT the only people committing them. People's neighbors were committing them.

And as has been said by other reviewers, you will not look at your life in the same way after reading this. You will be so much more thankful for so many things. I'm so glad the author lived to tell his story to us.

Johnston draws on Jacques Lacan's oeuvre in conjunction with certain philosophical resources-elements from transcendental philosophy, structuralism, and phenomenology-to rectify the inconsistencies within the Freudian metapsychological model of drive. In doing so, he helps to answer a question haunting Freud at the end of his career: Why is humanity plagued by a perpetual margin of discontent, despite technological and cultural progress?
In Time Driven, Johnston is able to make sense of Freud's metapsychology both as a whole and in its historical development of Lacan's reinterpretation of Freud, and of the place of both Freud and Lacan in modern philosophy.

Beyond the Temporality Principle

Adrian Johnston gives us an ambitious and provocative book on psychoanalytic concept of the drive. What Johnston sets out to investigate is the place time has in Freud's theory of the drives. Freud famously said that the unconscious is without time, and yet psychoanalysis is rich in complicated temporalities, such as, the retroactive reconstruction of childhood memories. What role do these temporal torsions have in the structure of the drive? That such questions remain is evidence that Freud and Lacan failed to adequately theorize time. The basic idea behind Johnston's book is that the drive itself is split between an atemporal, noumenal, structure called the axis of iteration, which is the drive's constant pulsation, and a temporal, phenomenal, structure called the axis of alteration, which is an unfolding of the drive through its various object-representations.

Based solely on the question it poses, and the argument is espouses, Johnston's book is destined to be a CLASSIC of contemporary psychoanalytic literature--right up there with Sublime Object of Ideology and Read my Desire. That it has not already become the center of controversey is strange, since it make a powerful yet contentious critique of Freud. In other words, it avoids the trap of simply repeating psychoanalytic insights. Rather, it identifies a real problem, and goes to great lengths to resolve it.

I did not give it a full five stars because it has some weaknesses. The greatest drawback of the book is Johnston's style. The Preface, Introduction, and Conclusion are fabulously written. In many ways they encapsulate everything that is so great about the book. But almost every substantive chapter is not so well written. Every chapter contains an exhaustive historical account of the development of a concept, and one must always wait until the final sentences to get Johnston's thesis. The thesis is usually spot on, but the road getting there is exhausting and many times tedious. For example, Johnston makes a two chapter digression into Kantian philosophy to make the point that the psychoanalytic subject is split along temporal lines. This insight is great, but it did not demand nearly 70 pages of commentary on Kant to get there. If you have read Zizek's Tarrying with the Negative, then much of what Johnston has to say in these two chapters is redundant. I wished an editor would have forced Johnston to cut down much of his discourse to distill his major insights, which are as a rule fantastic. I would argue that the book could have easily been cut in half.

I would recommend that everyone interested in psychoanalysis pick up this book. But because of the way it is written, I would give this advice. If you are a new comer to psychoanalysis, read this word for word and you will walk away with a hefty but thorough introduction into psychoanalysis. Introductory seminars at the Graduate or Undergraduate level should assign this book (along with Bruce Fink's books). However, if you are a psychoanalysis veteran, then read the Preface, Introduction, and Conclusion thoroughly, and skim almost everything else.

Aside from its style, I detect other theoretical issues. One, Johnston seems to imply a stronger divergence between Freud and Lacan than I would suggest. Two, the solution that the drive is split between a noumenal and phenomenal realm is interesting but temptingly too simplistic.

All in all, a major work of psychoanalytic theory by a someone who is destined to be an important voice for a long time. Bravo!

It is about time

Johnston's book delves rather deeply into topics that are rarely discussed in current psychoanalysis, namely, temporality and drive theory. Johnston reminds us that, unlike some current authors assume, Freud's drives are not monolithic entities, but rather composites of several different motivational and cognitive components. Johnston contends that Freud's distinctions between different pieces of a drive allow us to take these pieces and situate them in two mental time zones- one of timeless repetition of urges, the other of temporal alteration of what these urges aim for and toward whom they are directed.

To be sure, Johnston's book is somewhat uneven. Readers may find some of the earlier chapters digressive or simply awkward. However, those willing to push through these chapters will find that their understanding of Freud, drive theory, and the psychoanalysis of time will be considerably enriched, whether or not they find themselves agreeing with Johnston's conclusions.

A must-buy for those interested in psychoanalytic temporality

A lucid, engaging account of psychoanalytic temporality. The thesis is compelling and important, although as some others have noted, Johnston's book could have been reduced by 50 or maybe even 100 pages; those in a hurry could read the introduction and the conclusion and not miss a great deal at an abstract, conceptual level. I found it engaging to read through a number of his digressions, although the central thesis is repeated often enough in the development that one comes to wonder if the various chapters weren't stitched together out of a number of (partially overlapping) articles. By the time that the book's central components are introduced (the Axis of Iteration and Axis of Alteration), the reader has been so thoroughly prepared that there is little left to add.

There are a few problematic aspects: Johnston's account seems to waver between asserting on the one hand, with Zizek, that the state of primordial satisfaction is a retrospective fantasy of full jouissance produced by the symbolic, and claiming on the other hand that such a moment actually took place but is irretrievably lost. The attempt to link metapsychology with Kant's TUA is occasionally insightful but also a bit preposterous; one thinks that Kant might have suggested that the psychoanalytic axioms Johnston deploys (a sort of formalized paranoia, or to use Ricoeur's coinage, a hermeneutic of suspicion) would be an instance of the Rasen der Vernunft.

This is not to suggest that the book's problems are anything other than minor. To be extremely clear: Johnston offers the single most lucid and comprehensive account of temporality and the drive in Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalysis that I have ever read. In reading Johnston's work, I (retroactively) became frustrated with a number of texts I had worked with beforehand. He is a master of clear exposition, and I have since recommended this book to all my friends who work on Lacan (and none of my enemies). Finally, as a perhaps even greater testament to the author, after reading this, I went on to look at a few of Johnston's other writings. His response to Quentin Meillassoux ("À Dieu, Meillassoux") is equally clear and well-argued, and I look forward to reading more from him.

About the Author
B>Clifford E. Trafzer is Professor, Chair of Ethnic Studies, and Director of American Indian Studies at the University of California, Riverside. He is the author and editor of several books on Northwestern Indian history, including Indians, Superintendents, and Councils: Northwestern Indian Policy, 1850 -1855; Northwestern Tribes in Exile; and Renegade Tribe: The Palouse Indians and the Invasion of the Inland Pacific Northwest, which won the Governor's Book Award for the best nonfiction work published on the Northwest. He is currently working on a social history of death on the Yakima Reservation.
