The omission of page numbers for chapters in books and in collections reduces the volume's usefulness somewhat. A more serious problem is the author's indulgence in analytical overkill; he often includes as single entries separate chapters from the same full-length monograph, itself a separate entry. The Magill name, however, is bound to make this compilation a guaranteed staple for its intended undergraduate audience.

About the Author

François Villon (born circa1430) is widely recognized as one of France’s greatest lyric poets. A graduate of the Sorbonne and a chronic lawbreaker, he was pardoned for knifing a priest, jailed for stealing from a college chapel, and eventually sentenced to hang. He successfully appealed the sentence and was instead banished from Paris in 1463. He was never heard from again.

David Georgi studied medieval literature and modern poetry at Yale University and New York University. He works at Vanity Fair magazine and lives in New York City.

A "live fast, die young" Villon

This translation by David Georgi looks like the definitive Villon for our times. Georgi manages to capture the witty, wisecracking, lewd, morally deviant, mocking, "épater les bourgeois" spirit of Villon. While taking a few liberties in the name of clarification and to preserve Villon's playfulness with language, Georgi's poetic license is valid and class A. Great work.

These profoundly moving stories transcend the gruesome realities of the camps; their strength is that of the human spirit, the individual's ability to achieve moral triumph through action. Lustig's fiction shines among this century's outstanding literary achievements. This volume contains sixteen short stories previously published under the titles Diamond of the Night and Night and Hope and the novel Darkness Casts No Shadow. Conceived and written as a whole, they are published here together for the first time.

About the Author

Arnošt Lustig (Czech pronunciation: [ˈarnoʃt ˈlustɪk]) (21 December 1926 – 26 February 2011) was a renowned Czech Jewish author of novels, short stories, plays, and screenplays whose works have often involved the Holocaust. Lustig was born in Prague. As a Jewish boy in Czechoslovakia during World War II, he was sent in 1942 to the Theresienstadt concentration camp, from where he was later transported to the Auschwitz concentration camp, followed by time in the Buchenwald concentration camp. In 1945, he escaped from a train carrying him to the Dachau concentration camp when the engine was mistakenly destroyed by an American fighter-bomber. He returned to Prague in time to take part in the May 1945 anti-Nazi uprising. After the war, he studied journalism at Charles University in Prague and then worked for a number of years at Radio Prague.

Viola Spolin's Theater Games for the Lone Actor offers theater games and side coaching for the solo player. Building on her seminal Improvisation for the Theater, Spolin challenges the actor to develop an ability to enter present time, "a moment of full consciousness, awareness, continuous time, a timeless moment . . . with all of your responses awake and alert, ready to guide you . . . allowing you, the real you, your natural self, to emerge."
Spolin's improvisational techniques changed the nature and practice of modern theater. Her work has inspired actors, directors, teachers, and writers in theater, television, and film. Her techniques have also influenced the fields of education, mental health, social work, and psychology.

About the Author
Viola Spolin, the originator of theater games, was introduced to the use of games, storytelling, folk dance, and dramatics as tools for stimulating creative expression in the 1920s while a student of Neva Boyd at Chicago's Hull House. During her years as a teacher and supervisor of creative dramatics there, she began to develop her nonverbal, nonpsychological approach. Her books have been translated into Swedish, German, and Portuguese. She died in 1994.

Paul Sills is Viola Spolin's son and the founding director of Chicago's Second City and of Story Theater. He is the coeditor of the third edition of Spolin's Improvisation for the Theater, also published by Northwestern University Press.

Good Is Better Than Good Enough

"Theater Games for the Lone Actor" is not a beginner's book. It is structured to take advantage of the lingering effects actors enjoy after participating in the games played in Spolin's "Improvisation for the Theater." For instance, the mindset needed for side-coaching the self, essential to succeeding at the activities in this book, does not come without exposure from an outside source.
However, for those who have learned the thought processes that come of Spolin-style improvisation, "Theater Games for the Lone Actor" has multiple applications. When working in a solo position, such as a one-man show, a screen test, or an audition, using these activities in preparation can make the difference between doing well and doing exquisitely. These activities also are useful for memorization and other scene work within a directed play, and for compensating for a lackluster director or weak co-star.
Many of these activities are adapted from "Improvisation for the Theater." Some activities that were originally presented for group work, such as Space Walk and Feeling Self With Self, recur between the covers of this slim pamphlet. The difference lies in doing them individually, refreshing the benefit of prior group work, and also in coaching yourself, becoming aware in a more objective manner of what you're doing as an actor and how you're doing it.
Repetition of the concept of "present time" reinforces the almost Buddhist nature of theatrical improvisation, requiring participants to be entirely in the moment. This is good advice for all forms of actors, since, if you're in another time and place, you're not giving the character you play the commitment it deserves. Through long-term exposure to the activities in this book, and effort consummate to commitment, an actor can develop the ability to be in the moment on command, or even on a permanent basis.
This book is tiny, small enough to slip unobtrusively in a shirt pocket and have on hand to do solo warm-ups or skills exercises. This helps allow the actor to develop while waiting for an audition, while riding on a bus, while lying in bed at night, or in any situation where time and solitude permit even a moment's concentration.
Highly recommended for all working and aspiring actors, "Theater Games for the Lone Actor" is the kind of book that can make all the difference between doing a good job and doing a merely good enough job.

Every actor's companion

I am a former student of Viola Spolin. I was around when Viola was working on this book. She knew her work was needed in group situations, but she also knew the needs of actors who have to work "in one". Either in front of a camera or an audtion situation. She knew the problems of fear, urgency and over thinking were the actor's nemesis.
These games and suggestions help an actor become 'present' to his/her own work and therefore fully involved in the reading, audtion or solo performance.
Not only that, it is a great method to enrich your everyday life. The same games and suggestions are great ways to bring yourself more fully to your relations with others.
The Sills, Paul and Carol have done a great job of editing this book. It's really easy to read.
I especially like the poems included in the book. "Crystal Ball" is my favorite of Spolin's poems celebrating the mystery of present time.
Her whole theory of play and present time is a great way to live life.

I think it's funny that after reading reviews for this and another book bearing the name Jon Stewart, that they think this is the same Jon Stewart as the one from the Daily Show. Well, lets consider for a moment that Jon Stewart from the Daily show deals with Politics and not Phenomena or Existentialism. If you're looking for the quick satire of the political guru/funnyman, then don't shell out the money to get something that quite obviously isn't from him. Maybe people should follow his cue and start investigating before they believe in something.

About the Author
Charles E. Claghorn served as the historian of the Florida Society, Sons of the American Revolution, and is the author of Naval Officers of the American Revolution (Scarecrow, 1988) and Women Composers and Hymnists (Scarecrow, 1984). Hilde Strait has received awards in many shows. Her work has been shown in national exhibits of the American Pen Women, Lever House, New York; Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford; and Hudson River Museum, Yonkers.

The Author takes eight years of the Revolution and brings to life the struggles and fight the women went through as helpmates and patriots themselves during the American Revolution. This is an extraordinary book of women Patriots as a listing and also as biographical data. This book gathers together the pioneer women who helped to forge this great nation during the Revolutionary period. What a gift to women who are trying to archive their lineage and take it back to a "Woman"...the forgotten patriots by name who took the same chances and fought shoulder to shoulder with the men. No longer shall the women just be a number in a book or a percentage...you have their names here within the covers of this book by Charles E. Claghorn. Thank you sir! McCall's, the work of a young enthusiast, is segmented into three parts. Part 1 covers 180 animated features, providing credits, notes, synopses, and "critical" ratings. Part 2, which is unfortunately devoid of specifics, lists live-action films that contain animated sequences. Part 3 encapsulates over 1500 animated shorts, supplying credits and notes. The result is serviceable but marred by the problematic Part 2, which neglects both the stop-motion effects of Ray Harryhausen (Clash of the Titans) and the computer animation integral to films like The Last Starfighter (1984) and Jurassic Park (1992). A critic for Hour, Montreal's English-language weekly, Borowiec surveys films under 39 minutes in length. Not unlike McCall, he eschews sustained commentary in favor of single-sentence remarks and "critical" stars. The main section of this work lists over 1800 short films, released between 1906 and 1997, in alphabetical order. Borowiec does a fine job of including films from around the world, and the director and chronological indexes are useful. Unfortunately, his entries are so brief as to be of little use. Why?

At first I thought this book was a kind of less involved but broader reaching version of the Beck & Friedwald book on Warners. Cartoons are listed alphabetically with date and (very) brief credits along with a one or two line review. Although not as in depth as the B&F book it does cover cartoons from all the studios. Fine, but although it covers all the studios it doesn't cover all the cartoons! The introduction tells us that it covers all types of animation (drawn, puppet, computer etc) but only that available on videotape or on TV & Cinema release now or recently. So why doesn't it mention Carrotblanca or Box Office Bunny? Both recent Bugs Bunny cartoons. It has the feeling of an amateur book, a listing of someone's personal collection that doesn't include stuff he doesn't have. I'm sure a book that lists every cartoon ever made by anyone is a practical impossibility but this kind of book (especially at this kind of price) needs to be far more comprehensive than this.

A long-overdue, great, Mack Sennett filmography

Mr. Sherk has done a wonderful job with this book, cataloging, indexing and cross-referencing the Mack Sennett Collection in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.Unfortunately not every film produced by the King of Comedy is included, (such as most of the Chaplin Keystones) only those films documented within the Sennett papers. Not completely reliable (certain cast & credit info was often tentative & later changed during film production), but darn close making this a great reference book. If only there were more illustrations!

A great disappointment

I expected the book to contain a synopsis of the films and who played in it and some comments. What I saw was simply pages and pages of productions but nothing of interest to a person who might have enjoyed more about Mack Sennet and his personal life along with the films he was responsible for. I was greatly disappointed. It was a gift for my daughter and I felt like I needed to apologize to her. She played Mabel in "Mack and Mabel" in a professional production in a dinner theatre here in the area and I thought she might enjoy this book. I was wrong.
