In poems both intimate and public, meditative and musical, Dings seeks to enrich the present by evoking both the future and the past. Urgent and carefully formed, these poems seek an awareness and expression that are responsible -- intellectually and emotionally -- to the most private and most communal moments of human experience. In its exploration of the emotional and spiritual dichotomy struggling within us all, Eulogy for a Private Man is essentially and profoundly human in theme.

Theres a certain uniformity of expression that borders on monotony in this second volume by the Wichita State University professora collection that explores silence and solitude in language that is somber and without much rhythm. Dingss austere and attenuated metaphysics, with its relentless abstraction, allows for few things, or people, or places, but his poems are nevertheless accessible and proceed often by contraries: presence vs. absence, perception vs. reality, memory vs. forgetting. In these colorless lyrics, Dings searches among the ruins of the past for rare moments of kindness or a moment / fully lived, and in his fine poem The Rehearsal, he nicely restates the oft-held wish that this life were a warm-up for another chance. Dingss serious verse seems prayer-like: He finds joy in church music; he regrets all those things left undone in The Unlived, and he warns against those sublime impediments of the flesh in the puritanical Bodily Beautiful. In numerous pieces, including the title homage to another man of silence and intimate alienation, Dings seeks a common gravity that the family in The Family Gatherings discovers in their shared past and the prospect of death. Even his lighter poemsset off with the title Scherzopursue the same themes, especially when he humorously identifies himself with Prufrock. Eventually, Dingss tendency to animate abstract ideas weighs down the volume (the weeds of misanthropy, the wings of despair, the body of the ordinary, the skin of your perception). The final poem, which reconsiders Hart Cranes suicide as an immersion (not a failure), allows Dingss own morbidity to triumph in an otherwise decent volume. -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. Review of Eulogy For a Private Man
By A Customer
As a reader of contemporary poetry, one hesitates to call a new work "great"-- and rightfully so. The fadish trends of styles and schools come and go, and it is easy to be swept up by a new work, an new voice, at the moment, and to help upon it premature and unearned laurels. Only time, perhaps, can truly measure a work's gravity and power. Yet, there appears, from time to time, certain works by new up -and -coming poets that immediately and recongizably assert themselves as "the real thing"--additions to the body of American poetry that, because of their obvious artistry, will surely last. One thinks of the classic early "breakthrough" books that in their originality of voice and expert craftsmanship marked the entrance of a new and exciting poetic presence on the scene. Such a new book is Fred Dings' Eulogy For A Private Man. The thirty-five poems in this collection display a fusion of the highest intellect with an impeccable ear and attention to detail. Almost seamless in their subtle craftsmanship, the poems reveal a willingness to plumb the depths of traditional form in order to get to a liberating "deeper place"--without heavy-handedness. In both highly controlled free verse and more traditional poems, Dings is at ease with his own voice and modes of expression. This voice is varied, but most often elegaic, philosophical, and earthy. Such a unique combination in the hands of a poet of Dings' caliber, renders poems at once beautiful, intellectually penetrating, and darkly inspiring. Powerful images populate these pages--images that are multi-layered in their possible philosophical implications: A newborn's "two lungs billow like sails"; In a graveyard, we are shown "moonlit stones in rows like teeth"; In one poem we are tempted to consider how "miracles grow from misery/ like roses growing from a bed of coals"; and "When our bodies are torn open like envelopes,/what news will our ancestors be able to read in us?" Throughout Eulogy For A Private Man, the reader becomes progressively aware of a third-person "he" that clearly represents the "private man" persona. In many poems, this persona is places within a variety of existential predicaments--as any human being would be:love, the admiration and examination of the natural world, the search for ultimate meaning in daily suffering and joy, and death. Identificiable and specific, yet universal and "abstract" in the best sense of the word, this "he" comments on the head-on existential collisions and exhilarations that all human experience. Dings describes this "he" for us: "The years of failure had wounded his hope beyond/recovery. The erotic postures of possible futures/no longer duped him..." ("The Man and The Cemetery Effigy"). This "he" strikes the reader as a vulnerable soul who has grappled with lifes' gale--storms, yet has come to the difficult knowledge that, "Each day must be wresled for beauty." This persona, which could truly be any of us--thus its power and relevance--is isolated and spiritually x-rayed on the slab of the page for us to see into "his" mystery, and to see into our own. In the book's title poem, we see the private man after his supposed death, in eulogistic fashion: "He annoyed us and intrigued us, a hieroglyph/ of cliff-faced solitude we tried to decipher." Moreover, irresistible mental constructs are consistently presented in the poems that reverberate in the reader's mind, inviting further pondering:
If only he could memorize like a lover the body of the ordinary, which was already a dream much larger than all sleep. ("The Unlived")
And:
If only we could be like the stars when they die their final explosions of light like death-blossoms seeding new matter in the fertile night. ("In the Season of Memory")
There are so many individual lines of power and grace in this book, in fact, that one is tempted to cite them all--if only space would allow. Indeed, this may be the true mark of great poetry: that each line can stand on its own, carry its weight, and exist as a self-contained unit of expression. Eulogy For A Private Man has echoes of Rilke, Strand, Stevens, and even James Wright; yet Dings has a voice that extends beyond simple comparison and tracing of influences. This reviewer is very willing to stick his neck out and state that, here, undeniably, is a great book of poetry. In one poem, the private man persona learns that he must "find his dignity in obscurity." With poems like these, obscurity is something Fred Dings will not have to worry about in the future.

The power of opposites
By E. H. Wiley
Fred Dings' work always reminds me of Wordsworth's line that "poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility." Dings is a rare poet in that he skillfully utilizes very classical forms to convey very modern themes. The result is stunning. As Coleridge would say, his poetry expresses "more than the usual emotion" in a format of "more than the usual order." I, too, would like to see a little more play with metre in his work, because the intentional variations would be very powerful -- and there is no doubt he has the skill. But why force an outside opinion on a very original and unique voice? Dings' form and metre is integral to his compelling voice as a writer. He is complex and deep while also being accessible. His work expresses with exquisite elegance the decidedly inelegant parts of our deepest selves. His work is downright heartbreaking at times and you may not even see it coming. More than the usual emotion set into more than the usual order. One of a kind.

Consummate Artistry, Transcendent Concerns
By Roger Lathbury
Fred Dings is one of the most accomplished poets to emerge in the 1990's. In this second collection, Dings's steady eye and perfectly tuned ear evoke a universe where "Each swirl and eddy of the world, each smell, / flavor, hue, touch, and tone . . . / burn inside the flame of attention." This accessible volume enriches the attentive mind with enlarged possibilities of understanding. Poem after poem displays a sure sense of form (Dings is especially effective with variations on terza rima) and imagery reaching the highest levels of understanding and sometimes beyond, yet all is grounded in sensual experience. Consciously lovely, with a painterly sense of suggestion and color and a verbal music as fine as the idea of music itself, *Eulogy for a Private Man* is a very moving book--a cause for celebration for every serious reader.
