This valuable text is clearly the starting point for anyone involved in a process that may lead to starting an archives. (Wilson Library Bulletin)
This book fills a useful niche in the literature and will introduce its subject to many in related professional or administrative fields where the message needs to be got across. (Library Review)
...an attractive publication for the non-archivist who may have to assume some responsiblity for an in-house archives. (Alr)
The manual has a refreshing honesty and realism. (Journal Of The Society Of Archivists)
Examples and illustrations are drawn from many kinds of archives, so that the manual would be equally useful for a business, a religious community, a college or university, a local historical society, or a government agency...The order of preservation is logical, the coverage is broad, of course, but thorough, and each chapter gives reliable advice in a helpful way...Starting an Archives is suitable for anyone contemplating the establishment of such a program, and all the steps in it should be considered and planned before such a program is initiated. It will be helpful for basic workshops...a useful workbook for any in which the desire or necessity of controlling historical records has been recognized. (Collection Management)
...will be an invaluable volume. It fills a need that has long existed in archival literature for a brief, readable introduction...will continue to be an essential element on the archivist's list long after the current computer applications have gone the way of cuneiform and beta cassettes. (The American Archivist)
It is an intellectual road map to the questions which should be asked and the considerations which should be analyzed by any institution or organization deciding how to handle its accumulated records. It is cogent, well organized, and full of useful information for decision makers and those assigned the task of providing them with alternative solutions to record problems. (The Public Historian)

Start with this book
By Jason Fowler
Starting an Archives is a must have book for anyone who has the responsibility of caring for archive or manuscript collections yet has little experience. In less than one hundred pages, Elizabeth Yakel skillfully navigates the basic process for getting an archive up and running. She discusses planning for an archival program and offers insights regarding expenses, staffing, facilities, and consultants. She addresses many of the issues, such as collection development and appraisal, that archivists deal with prior to a collection being called a collection. Her discussions of arrangement and description are extremely helpful. She also covers issues that are sometimes overlooked, such as providing reference services and outreach. Especially helpful are her appendices, which offer models for deeds of gifts, procedure manuals, and user registration forms.
This book should be on every archivist's shelf, but it should be especially helpful for small start-up archives that one might find in small towns, local libraries, or churches. It would help workers in such organizations to do no harm to their collections and to use terminology common to the archival profession. This would aid the workers greatly when they seek outside consultation. All in all, this book is a very helpful general resource. Most archivists at any level would need more information than this book includes. Issues such as arrangement, description, and preservation require longer, more detailed works to cover all the issues one encounters. Yakel's work, however, is a great beginner's guide that I recommend highly.

A valuable guide to creating an archives
By gloine36
This slim tome is designed for people who are preparing to start an archives. The information here will help them in the planning stage so they prepare their archives in such a manner as befits professional archivists. Even if the planners are professionals, the book still serves as a helpful reminder while for the beginner it provides them with the terms and concepts found in archives today. It also can be used to show them concepts they may have overlooked while also preventing them from making errors that would cost time and money later to correct.
Yakel provides references for more detailed instruction throughout the book which is helpful for additional information in the areas an archives might be focusing on. Elizabeth Yakel is a professional archivist and uses her experiences in the field creating and working in archives with her education as a doctoral student to put together this informative reference. She included examples of archives she herself worked in as well as the experiences she had in creating them. At the end of the book she includes several forms which are quite common to archives as a template for new archives. She also added a list of archival associations for people to look up in their area.
The Society of American Archivists have been busy compiling information and getting it published which serves to aid their cause in the professionalism of their association. By creating this book and other, the society is generating common standards for its practice which will help all types of archives establish universal practices in the future. This book serves that purpose and should be considered for use by many organizations considering what to do with the collections they have in their possession.
