Dictionary of Literary Biography: Canadian Writers Since 1960, by William New

In 1958 the Massey Commission on Canadian Cultural Policy established the Canada Council, an organization devoted to active encouragement and financial support of artistic endeavors. Canadian writers were published in larger numbers, Canadian theaters opened for Canadian plays and courses in Canadian literature became standard features in universities and high schools. These developments had a direct impact both on the character of Canadian writing and on how it reached readers. The decades following 1959 saw a new generation of writers contending with the particular manifestations of their cultures. The decade of the 1960s was one of militant cultural nationalism; the 1970s saw the fruition of those national commitments; while the 1980s were marked by a wave of economic recession which affected daily life as well as political policy. This first volume in a six volume series on Canadian literary achievement profiles 67 notable writers from this prolific period. 67 entries include: Milton Acorn, Hubert Aquin, Margaret Atwood, Leonard Cohen, Marcel Dube, Marian Engel, Diane Giguere, Jacques Hebert, D. G. Jones, Robert Kroetsch, Suzanne Paradis, Scott Symons and Richard B. Wright.

The Twelve Chairs (Northwestern World Classics), by Ilya Ilf, Evgeny Petrov

Winner, 2012 Northern California Book Award for Fiction in Translation

More faithful to the original text and its deeply resonant humor, this new translation of The Twelve Chairs brings Ilf and Petrov’s Russian classic fully to life. The novel’s iconic hero, Ostap Bender, an unemployed con artist living by his wits, joins forces with Ippolit Matveyevich Vorobyaninov, a former nobleman who has returned to his hometown to look for a cache of missing jewels hidden in chairs that have been appropriated by the Soviet authorities. The search for the chairs takes them from the provinces of Moscow to the wilds of the Transcaucasus mountains. On their quest they encounter a variety of characters, from opportunistic Soviet bureaucrats to aging survivors of the old propertied classes, each one more selfish, venal, and bungling than the last. A brilliant satire of the early years of the Soviet Union, as well as the inspiration for a Mel Brooks film, The Twelve Chairs retains its universal appeal.

Review
"No translator knows Ilf and Petrov like Anne Fisher. The Twelve Chairs is a ruthless skewering of Soviet and Russian culture and society that is as relevant (and funny) today as when it was published in 1928. And of course Fisher’s translation is brilliant and fresh, brimming with invaluable footnotes to provide context and meaning to the text." —Russian Life

About the Author

Ilya Ilf Fainzilberg (1837 – 1937) and Evgeny Petrovich Kataev (1903 – 1942) met in Moscow in 1925 and wrote this novel from a plot idea suggested to them by Kataev’s famous brother, the novelist Valentin. Their subsequent joint works – including The Golden Calf (1931) and One-Storey High America (1936) – were equally popular in Russia.

Anne O. Fisher translated Ilya Ilf and Evgeny Petrov’s The Little Golden Calf (2009), awarded the 2011 AATSEEL Book Prize for Best Translation into English, and Ilf and Petrov’s American Road Trip: The 1935 Travelogue of Two Soviet Writers (2007), short-listed for the 2007 Rossica prize. She lives in San Francisco.

The OSTAP Overview
By Amazon Customer
Well ... here's the thing. For reasons I won't go into here, I've had occasion to own and read ALL the English translations extant of both THE TWELVE CHAIRS and its sortakinda "sequel" THE (LITTLE) GOLDEN CALF. (The discrepancy in the title of the second is due to a peculiarity of Russian, which lets you make a diminution of calf without quite saying little calf; it's a construction, not an adjective, and there's no English equivalent. But it's similar to Yiddish, in which the name David, which translates as Duvid, can be turned into Duvidl [DOO-vid-ul] both as an endearment or as a nickname for a youngster.)

Anyway, having read them all, carefully, comparatively and cover-to-cover, I can say this with absolute assurance: no matter which you read, if you're reading solely for pleasure, you'll get an accurate representation of the book. To be sure, each iteration carries its translator's/translators' imprimatur, but all are similar of tone and content (notwithstanding that some of the early translations are not quite as complete, which matters more academically than aesthetically). None is perfect, but none shortchanges you.

In making consumer comparisons, one should probably dispense with the first version of THE TWELVE CHAIRS (published as DIAMONDS TO SIT ON) by Elizabeth Hill and Doris Mudie, and the first of THE LITTLE GOLDEN CALF (under that title) by Charles Malamuth, both from the 1930s, long out of print and likely never to be reissued. Which leaves John C. Richardson's versions of both THE TWELVE CHAIRS (still in print and available as a free download at one of the open library sites, having apparently slipped into the public domain) and THE GOLDEN CALF (under that title), which is out of print but "gettable" via antiquarian sites, in paperback and (sometimes expensively) in an omnibus edition with CHAIRS, called THE COMPLETE ADVENTURES OF OSTAP BENDER. And of course the new translations: THE GOLDEN CALF by Konstantin Gurevich & Helen Anderson, THE LITTLE GOLDEN CALF by Anne O. Fisher, and Ms. Fisher's even newer version of THE TWELVE CHAIRS.

For the smoothness of the read, and the best delivery of natural-sounding, idiomatic English, Richardson is a little subdued (perhaps because he's British, and too because his work reflects his era, the 1960s) but sturdy, dependable and above all entertaining. Reading either book -- again, if pleasure or expanding your world literature horizon is the goal -- you can't go wrong.

However, his is not the liveliest, most energetic job of prose and dialogue; that honor goes to Gurevich-Anderson's THE GOLDEN CALF (2009). But comparing their version to others, it would seem less accurate to the letter of the text than the spirit of the text (but not so interpretive that it distorts). There's a conscious effort here to eschew all vestiges of archaicism and make the prose sound not updated but contemporary.

Anne Fisher's versions of THE TWELVE CHAIRS (2011) and THE LITTLE GOLDEN CALF (2009) would seem to be the most academically accurate, but the trade-off is that they're not consistently *as* entertaining, and sometimes sacrifice liveliness on the altar of literalness. But the entirely worthwhile trade-off, to those for whom such is important -- and it was for me -- is that her books trump the others easily for scholarship. Introductory essays, appendices of detailed footnotes, in CALF an extra appendix flagging some of the Ilf & Petrov phrases that entered everyday Russian speech, are rich and valuable sources of information and provide the widest possible context for a Western world reader.

Don't be sucked in by any of the "translation smackdowns" you may find online or at Amazon regarding these titles. (i.e. while it's true that Ilf's daughter, Alexandra, authorized the Gurevich-Anderson translation of CALF, she nonetheless wrote her foreword for the Anne Fisher translation; and another for Fisher's CHAIRS.) No version is a bad choice. But knowing what each version has to offer should help you decide on the one(s) that you'll find most gratifying.

Spectacular translation
By J. First
I agree wholeheartedly with Pelaphus. Anne Fisher gives us the first and only worthwhile English translation of _The Twelve Chairs_, which is a must read for anyone wanting to understand Russian / Soviet culture. Better yet, you should also buy Fisher's translation of Ilf and Petrov's The Little Golden Calf. After that, you're set.

Ostap in full measure; the set is now complete
By Paul E. Richardson
No translator knows Ilf and Petrov like Anne Fisher. And it is a joy to announce that her translation of the first Ostap Bender tale is now in print, completing the set (Russian Life Books published her prize-winning translation of The Little Golden Calf in 2009).

The "smooth operator" is here in full measure, this time with his sidekick Ippolit Vorobyaninov, as the pair haplessly search the Russian provinces for a set of chairs, inside one of which is believed to be a priceless treasure in jewels. The Twelve Chairs is a ruthless skewering of Soviet and Russian culture and society that is as relevant (and funny) today as when it was published in 1928. And of course Fisher's translation is brilliant and fresh, brimming with invaluable footnotes to provide context and meaning to the text.

As reviewed in Russian Life.

Charlie Parker and Thematic Improvisation, by Henry Martin

Martin provides a new overall assessment of the importance of Charlie Parker through an analysis of his improvisations in a variety of genres. Earlier studies of Parker argue that his style is based on an extensive network of melodic formulas that are combined to create solos. Because the same formulas appear throughout his improvisations regardless of the theme, these studies concluded that the solos do not usually relate to the original melodies. "Charlie Parker and Thematic Improvisation" provides a much-needed reassessment by showing that Parker's solos are often related to the original themes in unexpected and sometimes ingenious ways. The conclusion sums up features of Parker's style and discusses his contribution in the context of Western music history. Numerous transcriptions are provided. This groundbreaking technical study will be of interest to musicologists and serious students of jazz.

...in-depth and closely analytical...an essential addition to the collection of anyone interested in creative improvised music from a musicological point of view. (Cadence)

This is the latest in a magnificent body of jazz literature, and, so far as depth is concerned, surely Rutgers' finest achievement...this volume is simply brilliant...such depth and omniscience in the purely musical sense. Exceptional. (Crescendo And Jazz Music)

This could be one of the most insightful books on Parker's style ever published. For all of you musicians who are Bach fanatics (if you aren't check him out), this is the book for you. Henry gives a fresh perspective to an widely emmulated saxophonic vocabulary using a Schenkerian approach(If you don't have Schenker's counterpoint book get it)by addressing Parker's profound "Bach-like" sense of voice leading. Being a noteworthy educator and composer (former student of Milton Babbit), Henry's abitlity to verbalize asthetics is simply astounding. Add this one to your music theory book collection. It's is worth a thousand more than what it costs.

of academic interest only !
By Eddie Landsberg
Basically this book uses Schenkerian analysis to find sense in the improvisational lines of Charlie Parker.
The idea itself is not so bad, but to be honest, I think the best way to play Parker is to understand how he ticked, and definitely acquaint yourself with the language that he as well as people who play him used.
Charlie Parker, no doubt was a riff player... but the catch being that he didn't just play 2 or 3 or the same riffs all the time... he played 100s (well, maybe 100 or so identifiable motifs seem to pop up again and agin.) Of key note, they weren't the same old hackneyed stuff that everyone else before him played, but his own book... and all deeply and richly conceptual based on his understanding of conventional chord theory, which he saw differently than his peers as well as his experience actually blowing blues... hence, for example you might have a conventional riff like in 'Now's the Time', but in the mind of Bird, something is going to happen that makes it say something totally different and mind blowing... (For fun, listen to other tunes of his, and see if you can find other traditional blues and swing riffs hidden in between the other stuff he did... they're almost always present, but like WALDO, not necessarily easy to find, whether or not they're in your face.

My advice then, if you're buying this book for non-academic purposes, don't... however, take the following steps:
1. Learn to play your blues forms.
2. Learn to play "rhythm changes" form (in Bb) especially.
3. Learn to play basic II V I standards - - Including Cherokee, Stella By Starlight, Honeysuckle Rose etc.)
4. Master basic chord theory (R 3 5 9 11 13 - - major, minor, dominant, half diminished, etc.)
5. Once you can play chord runs in all keys, practice playing Jazz Melodies in general using the REAL BOOK, and as soon as possible graduating to ear.
6. Begin to transcribe simple BLUES heads... pre-bop o.k. (for example learn RED TOP and SYMPHONY SID by ear.)
7. Read Berliner's THINKING IN JAZZ and Amadea's HARMONIC FOUNDATIONS FOR JAZZ and POP.
8. Work on simple Parker Tunes from the REAL BOOKS (Now's The Time, Buzzy, Confirmation, Yardbird Suite, Billie's Bounce) - - If possible, try to figure out some stuff by ear... not that it is easy.
9. For help internalizing the melodies consider listening to Eddie Jefferson.
10. Once you've learned several dozen Parker tunes, beging to engage in your own chord/harmony style analysis, taking note why he seemed to choose the notes he chose, and the chord shapes the outlined. Be sure to get the DIAL and SAVOY recordings in particular.
11. While doing this, read up as much as you can about the life and times of Bird as well as the Bebop movement in general - - sometimes the way of thinking of a musician can give you clues to their choice of notes - - literally.
12. Continue your journey the way the old masters did... by listening to the old recording and doing their best to figure them out, but aurally and mentally.... boom, you got it..

As for this book... frankly speaking, the language it uses and approach it takes might appeal to people interested in composing from a classical perspective, but it definitely ain't how I or any Jazz musician I know think on the bandstand... so to that extent, its purely academic - - but a noble effort to find some intelligent way of cracking the code !

Problematizing the other Reviews
By Rutiger Reviews
I felt obligated to offer a brief review (?) of Henry Martin's book as it, and the literature from which it derives, was so terribly mischaracterized by the other amazon reviews.

What the reviews got correct: This is a book for specialists. Someone with little knowledge of the Schenkerian literature and jazz theory research (as opposed to jazz theory pedagogy) will likely (as is apparent in all three reviews) be unable to make heads or tails of Martin's argument, which I feel is quite clear to anyone with the aforementioned pre-reqs.

Some Correctives for the interested buyer:

Martin's goal is simply to attach the formulas, riffs, cliches, licks, etc. on the surface of Parker's improvisations to underlying linear and harmonic aspects of the heads. He makes aesthetic claims that relate forms (blues, rhythm-changes, and pop songs) and degree relationship between improvisation and composition, but they are not always unity=good, harmonic riffing=bad.

To claim that Martin obfuscates Parker's riff-oriented approach is to horribly misread the text.

To the author that stated that no jazz musicians think along Schenkerian lines: this is patently untrue. The most common counterexample is Bill Evans, who did graduate work at Mannes in a time when that institution was the forefront exporter of the technique. If you're interested these discussions, check out Steve Larson's dissertation.

To the same reviewer: Martin is not concerned with Parker's intent and he makes this quite explicit.

Similarly, to the reviewer trying to ascribe Bach-like characteristics to Parker, Martin did not disseminate this opinion.

Martin does however, simply setting up a parallel conservative lineage, which goes against a common conception; essentially, Martin claims that Parker's situation in the oral tradition and those who followed including free jazzers like Ornette were in a sense more conservative than people like Duke Ellington and Gil Evans who emphasized composition.

Martin makes no claim about this book and your musicianship. It might help if you want to integrate its ideas.

Finally,to claim that Martin has no practical experience with jazz is to be unaware of who he is, a well-known classical/jazz composer/performer with several albums on the Albany label of primarily piano music.

THE index on all Warner Brothers cartoon
By G. B. J. Grob
Do you know that feeling? You're watching a Warner Brothers cartoon, and you would really like to know who made it and when. If you do, you should buy this book. It is not about highlights, it is not a history of Warner Brothers animation, but a list of ALL Warner Brothers shorts in chronological order, each item contains information about who made it, when it was made, with which stars and with what story line. Sure, when you don't know the title of the short it involves a lot of scanning through the pages (there are very few illustrations), but you WILL be able to get this information. Not an entertaining book, but a must-have encyclopedia for all Warner Brothers cartoon fans.
However, for background information one should turn to the richly illustrated "that's all folks, the art of Warner Brothers animation".

The "forewunner", as Elmer Fudd would say
By A Customer
Eight years before publishing their masterpiece "Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies...", Friedwald and Beck teamed up for "The Warner Bros. Cartoons". This book lacks illustrations and the text is less informative than in the later work, but it does have concise reviews or plot synopses of every Warner's cartoon released between 1930 and 1969. It's interesting to note the changes of opinion on some of the cartoons...for example, "The Apes Of Wrath" is unfavorably reviewed in 'TWBC' (probably by Beck) and more highly regarded (by Friedwald) in 'LT&MM'. Both books should be on the reading list of every Warner Brothers cartoon fan.

Not what I was hoping for
By Kreativart
This book is a reference book. I must not have read the description closely enough. It lists and describes each cartoon, but there is no back story or elaboration on the creators. I was hoping for insight on the creators rather than stark descriptions of each cartoon which I could just watch. My bad I'm sure. The price was right so....

Smile When the Raindrops Fall, by Brian Anthony, Andy Edmonds

At the age of ten, Charley Chase was singing and dancing on the street corners of Baltimore. Charley eventually became a local vaudeville attraction, but Baltimore could not contain the ambitious young man. After a brief, but memorable, stint in New York, Chase finally landed in Los Angeles in 1912. His timely arrival coincided with the birth of the film industry, and Charley Chase became a major force in the shaping of motion picture comedy.

A human dynamo, Charley's talent and creativity seemed inexhaustible. As a writer/director/actor, Charley started out at Mack Sennett's Keystone Studios. Working with Fatty Arbuckle and Charlie Chaplin, Chase quickly became one of Sennett's top directors. Later, at other studios, he directed, then starred in his own series of funny and inventive two-reelers. Behind the scenes, Charley Chase was instrumental in shaping the careers of both Laurel & Hardy and The Three Stooges.

Chase's personal life paralleled his film work. At first he was energetic and optimistic―as was the infant film industry itself. As the movie grew up, Charley got older too. Chase's career, marred by family problems and alcoholism, mirrored the decline of the short film. Includes photographs and a detailed filmography.

Review
Charley Chase...is one of the great old-time comics who was touched by the cruel hand of genius but whose acceptance among the arbiters of taste was delayed until a half-century after his death. Now there is a biography, written con amor by a pair of excellent researchers whose affection for their subject is evident. (American Cinematographer)

Anthony and Edmonds perform a worthy public service for the film community by showcasing the busy, comic, and poignant life of film writer-director-actor Charley Chase...the pleasant, fluid narrative opts for the personal rather than the scholarly touch...the breadth and depth of personal interviews is staggering. Anthony and Edmonds provide an engaging model for reviving the personal histories of the silent and early sound films eras, making old black-and-white comic images not only accessible but colorful and entertaining. All academic and public film collections. (Choice)

...a fascinating trip through Chase's career. The writing is simple and unadorned, much like the filmaking of Chase himself. The authors have a vast knowledge of Chase's shorts, and they meticulously take us through each year of his career...Unlike many writers, however, Anthony and Edmonds aren't blinded by their subject. (Classic Images)

...the authors...managed to reveal the full story of Chase through access to the Hal Roach Studio papers and their interviews with Roach himself, Chase's daughters, Jules White, Joe Rock, Ed Bernds, Dorothy Granger, Elwood Ullman, Anita Garvin, Marvin hatley and others who worked with him...photos include many from the Chase family album never before published...I appreciated Chase before I read the book and do so even more now... (Big Reel)

Charley Chase is America's great unsung comedy talent. It's about time someone devoted an entire book to him! (Leonard Maltin)

Anthony and Edmonds do an excellent job of evoking the worlds in which Chase lived and worked....This is a worthwhile and valuable book. (Past Times)

Author and Charley Chase buff Brian Anthony presents his idol, warts and all...excellent research and dedicated attention to detail...a rich three-dimensional portrait of Chase and his times. (The Silents Majority)

...diligent research...a complete filmography is included which on its own is a miracle of accomplishment...in addition, the authors have dug deeply into the archives of the film companies where Chase worked and given us a chronology of the movies he made, the dates they were done, even the casts...well-researched and documented...an illuminating study of the man and his times. Four stars. (Rapport)

Now, thanks to the diligent research of these authors, tribute has at last been paid. A complete filmography is included which on its own is a miracle accomplishment...the general movie buff will more than likely taste the fruits of this endeavor. For those who are resourceful enough to read this well-researched and documented story, they'll find themselves with an illuminating study of the man and his times. (Rapport, Vol. 20, No. 5)

Along with fascinating biographical details, the authors cite specific films for analysis and provide a complet annotated filmography. (Film Quarterly)

...its cultural value is certain, providing an interesting and entertaining context for a forgotten star. (Historical Journal Of Film, Radio & Television)

The authors are most successful in making a case for a reexamination of Chase's work. This is a long-needed and most highly recommended book. (The Current)

From the Back Cover
At the age of 10, Charley Chase was singing and dancing on the street corners of Baltimore. The coins that tenement dwellers tossed his way helped the young boy support his impoverished family. Charley eventually became a local vaudeville attraction, but Baltimore could not contain the ambitious young man. After a brief but memorable stint in New York, Chase landed in Los Angeles in 1912. His timely arrival coincided with the birth of the film industry, and Charley Chase became a major force in shaping the evolution of motion picture comedy. A human dynamo, Charley's talent and creativity seemed inexhaustible. As a writer-director-actor, Charley started out at Mack Sennett's Keystone Studios. Working with Fatty Arbuckle and Charlie Chaplin, Chase quickly became one of Sennett's top directors. Later, at other studios, he directed, then starred in, his own series of funny and inventive two-reelers. Behind the scenes, Charley Chase was instrumental in shaping the careers of both Laurel & Hardy and The Three Stooges. Writer, producer, director, and comedian, Charley Chase may have been the most versatile performer in the history of motion pictures. Smile When the Raindrops Fall examines the life and career of one of Hollywood's great comedy innovators.

A fascinating and affectionate tribute to a great comic
By A Customer
"Smile When the Raindrops Fall" is a fascinating and affectionate look at the career of the vastly underrated motion picture comic Charley Chase (1893 - 1940). It's hard to imagine that Chase, whom time has mostly obscured, could be so vividly portrayed. However, through interviews with Chase's family, friends, and associates, the authors ressurect the comic in a biography that lovingly alternates between hilarity and heartbreak. Calling Chase one of the comic greats is no exageration: this brilliantly inventive and prolific figure contributed to over 300 films as writer, director, or actor (sometimes all three) before his untimely death at the age of 46. Chase worked with almost every major name in early film comedy, including Charlie Chaplin, Fatty Arbuckle, Harold Lloyd, Laurel & Hardy, and the Three Stooges. The reader is taken on a nostalgic tour of silent and early sound comedy, its evolution paralleling the career of one of its pioneers. Excellent photo's and a detailed biography are included. An important piece of Hollywood history has finally been documented, and done justice, in this fine biography.

A Well-Written Biography of a Fine Comedian and Director
By Eric Schultz
This is one of the very few books about Charley Chase that's ever been published. While he has been mentioned in a number of other books on film history, this is certainly the only full-length biography on him. Chase has been written about about in some books about film comedy, but this is the only book devoted to Chase's life story. He has long been referred to as "forgotten". This is a shame, because Charley Chase was a multi-talented comedian of stage and screen, as well as a film director and writer. He was a very capable silent film comedian, and then when sound came in, he was able to show off his musical talents by playing a number of different instruments and even singing songs that he wrote in many of his films. It's sad that such a talented comedic artist as Chase should be practically forgotten. Today, only film buffs and Laurel and Hardy fans remember him well.

Since it has been so long since Chase's death, it is hard to come up with much information about him, except for what was written in the papers, and from personal memories of those who knew him. You would think that it would be almost impossible to find enough material to write a full-length biography of Chase, but it has been done in this book. Practically everyone who worked with Charley Chase or knew him personally has passed away. It was just in time that the authors interviewed Chase's last living friends and colleagues. Many of them passed away soon afterward, so if the authors had waited a few more years, they might not have had half of the information that their book has.

This book is well researched and well-written. Many of the gaps in our knowlege of Chase have been more or less filled, or at least bridged. Reading the book gives us a pretty clear sense of the man and how he did his work. There's enough critical analysis in the book for us to get familiar with Chase's comedic style, but not so much that it gets off the track of telling his life story. Througout the book, there are little sidelight boxes that give us a synopsis of individual films, so that we can be familiar with the film that the narrative is discussing. Even though Chase died young, he started in films early, so he actually had a long and varied career in film.

At the end of book is a nice, long, complete filmography (with the great number of films that Chase made, it couldn't be anything but long!) plus a list of his songwriting credits as well. During the last decade or so, DVD releases of his films have proved that he isn't quite as forgotten as he may have been earlier. It's good for film history that this book exists. I recommend Smile When the Raindrops Fall to anyone interested in film comedy or in film history in general.

Charley Chase book will be out Dec 15--it's GREAT!
By A Customer
I have read the manuscript for this book, and must tell you it's a fantastic work. In an effort to update Amazon's Summary, I just want to tell all comedy fans that the publication date is definitely December 15 (Scarecrow guarantees delivery for Christmas); price is $49.95; it's 283 pages and contains over 80 photographs, many loaned from the Chase family's albums. Here's the Scarecrow Press Release: At the age of ten, Charley Chase was singing and dancing on the street corners of Baltimore. After a brief (but memorable) stint in New York, Chase finally landed in Los Angeles in 1912. Working with Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle and Charlie Chaplin, Chase quickly became one of Sennett's top directors. Later at other studios, he directed and then starred in his ownseries of funny and inventive two-reelers. Behind the scenes, Charley Chase was instrumental in shaping the careers of both Laurel & Hardy and The Three Stooges. Chase's personal life paralleled his film work. At first he was energetic and optimistic -- as was the infant film industry itself. As the movie business grew up, Charley got older, too. Chase's career, marred by family problems and alcoholism, mirrored the decline of the short film. The book includes over 80 marvelous photographs, many never before published, and a detailed filmography. BRIAN ANTHONY is an independent filmmaker and served as writer/producer/director of the award-winning feature film, "Victor's Big Score." She has authored five books, including FRAME UP! THE UNTOLD STORY OF "FATTY" ARBUCKLE. "Charley Chase is America's great unsung comedy talent. It's about time someone devoted an entire book to him!" --Leonard Maltin

In June 1862, Dostoevsky left Petersburg on his first excursion to Western Europe. Ostensibly making the trip to consult Western specialists about his epilepsy, he also wished to see firsthand the source of the Western ideas he believed were corrupting Russia. Over the course of his journey he visited a number of major cities, including Berlin, Paris, London, Florence, Milan, and Vienna. About the Author
Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky (Russian: Фёдор Миха́йлович Достое́вский; IPA: [ˈfʲodər mʲɪˈxajləvʲɪtɕ dəstɐˈjefskʲɪj]  ; 11 November 1821 – 9 February 1881 ) sometimes spelled Dostoevsky, was a Russian writer of novels, short stories and essays. Dostoyevsky's literary works explore human psychology in the troubled political, social and spiritual context of 19th-century Russian society. Although Dostoyevsky began writing books in the mid-1850s, his best remembered work was done in his last years, including Crime and Punishment, The Idiot and The Brothers Karamazov. He wrote eleven novels, three novellas, seventeen short novels and three essays and is often acknowledged by critics as one of the greatest and most prominent psychologists in world literature. Fyodor Dostoyevsky was born and raised within the grounds of the Mariinsky hospital in Moscow, in Russia.

Surprisingly funny, and relevant!
By Geoff Puterbaugh
Granted, nineteenth-century Russia was almost a different planet from modern America. But what do you think of these comments about the Frenchified Russians Dostoevsky disliked?

"It may be that reality around us looks none too lovely even yet; but then we are so wonderful ourselves, so civilized, so European that the common people feel sick at the very sight of us. We have now reached the point where the common people regard us as complete foreigners, and do not understand a single word of ours --- and this certainly is progress, whatever you say. We have now reached a point where our contempt for the common people and the basic principles of their being is so profound that even our attitude to them is stamped with a new, unprecedented and kind of supercilious disdain...and this is progress, whatever you say.

"And then how self-confident we now are in our civilizing mission, with what an air of superiority we solve all problems, and what problems! There is no soil, we say, and no people, nationality is nothing but a certain system of taxation, the soul is a tabula rasa, a small piece of wax out of which you can readily mould a real man or a homunculus --- all that must be done is to apply the fruits of European civilization and read two or three books. And then how serene, how majestically serene we are, because we have solved all problems and written them off."

For some strange reason, this passage made me think of the current situation in the United States.

Maybe we need to craft our own solutions to our problems, and not rely on the Wisdom of the French!

"Whatever you say," this is a very interesting book, in which Dostoevsky sometimes sounds just like H. L. Mencken.

By the way, Joseph Frank, who wrote the book on Dostoevsky, thinks that "Winter Notes on Summer Impressions" is, in an important way, a preliminary draft of that strange masterpiece, Notes from the Underground.

Highly recommended for a cold winter night!

Gripping portrait.
By Luc REYNAERT
Vivid impressions of the author during his travel all over Europe in the second half of the 19th century. His main targets are France (Paris) and England (London).
He gives us a biting and cynical portrait of the French: parvenus and bourgeois who make a mockery of 'liberté, égalité, fraternité'.
In England, he is confronted with child prostitution in London's Haymarket: a most terrible and moving scene of a child of only six, black and blue beaten, barefoot, who tries to lure him to have sex with her. On the contrary, the Anglican clerics preach a religion for the wealthy and don't even hide it. A most pregnant portrait of the fat and the meagre.
A book to recommend.

Capitalism critcism
By Lennin Arriola
In this book Dostoevsky seems to take his time to criticize capitalism ( or so I find), takes as an example French society,
criticizes the accumulation of money and the adulation of god money (Baal), the servilism that comes with it, analyzes the way marital relations are, that is in relation with capitalism (Bribri and Ma biche ).
I found it pretty good, although it requires you to have knowledge of many things of the time it was written, (for instance can you remember who is Guizot?) and be used to the style of Dostoevsky.
