About the Author
The late Berton Coffin's teachings and writings established him as an international authority on vocal pedagogy. Professor Emeritus, University of Colorado, Boulder, he also lived and taught in Europe from 1976 to 1983―in his private studio in Vienna; during summers with the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria; and in twenty-one opera houses in Austria, Denmark, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. He presented master classes in the United States and in Europe and served as a visiting professor of voice at U.S. universities. Dr. Coffin, baritone, held academic and professional music degrees from Columbia University, Eastman School of Music, Chicago Musical College, and Earlham College.

Excellent literal translations of German/French songs/arias

Word-By-Word Translations of Songs and Arias: Part I German and French by Coffin is an excellent resource for literal translations of both German and French Songs and Arias. In many cases the exact translation is awkward due to its syntax. In these cases, Coffin also offers a translation in English format. This book is an excellent resource for both teacher and student.

Translations for the language-deficient singing student

I bought this, and its companion volume, after twisting the arm of my voice teacher -- who was not wildly thrilled at the price. An hour after my return home from delivering them, he called me and told me they were so good he'd reimburse me double the purchase price!

The word-for-word technique was highly valuable, and we appreciated the added fillip of the re-prasing of certain passages where a literal translation was a bit difficult to understand.

A voice teacher's must-have

This translation source is one of the best. The word-by-word format is so helpful to singers--so much more accurate than the usual English "translations" found under the foreign text. Knowing exactly what each word means allows for so much more expression than just having an overall idea that the song is "all about love" or "it's a song about rejection", etc.

James Hillman (April 12, 1926 – October 27, 2011) was an American psychologist. He studied at, and then guided studies for, the C.G. Jung Institute in Zurich, founded a movement toward archetypal psychology and retired into private practice, writing and traveling to lecture, until his death at his home in Connecticut on October 27, 2011.

Intelligent ideas through the imagination of a western man

Mr. Hillman's early works are exciting reading, even today, some 25-30 years after their original publication. Here is a true scholar, in the old ways or classical sense. Mind you, I am not one. A visionary, a brave soul, a seeker, and never removed from life; Mr. Hillman remains fully immersed within it. I love this man for his courage, and his inspiring, challenging, and wholly imaginative ideas. If the word 'imagination' stirs something wonderful deep within you, read this man's work, please. For me, it seems this piece, together with 'Re-Visioning Psychology' and 'The Dream and the Underworld' bring together the author's core vision. Mr. Hillman of course, may disagree! A great man; an even greater contribution.

Myth, Psyche and Life

Hillman was fond of saying that everything from television to chicken feed is "myth." The ground under our feet, the stars in the sky, our names, our births, our lives and our deaths are saturated in myth. The soul, or psyche, both of which are tropes referring to the vast interiors of human experience, resonate with and move into and out of myth with each turning of the planet, indeed with each drawing in of breath. So of course any effort to engage the psyche in its content and motivations would have to be greatly influenced by the presence and effects of myth. Hillman's genius was always in moving into the ways psyche moves into myth as myth shapes and influences our lives and worlds. Myth is far more than we know, just as our lives and worlds are. A noted American artist born in Galesburg, Ill., Tanning lived in a milieu of European creativity as wife of the surrealist painter Max Ernst (1888-1976). Now in her 90s, she has expanded a previous memoir (Birthdays) to offer a fuller reminiscence. She is self-effacing, finding Ernst's life and story more interesting than her own, but describes their shared life poetically: "Yes, I think I was his house. He lived in me, he decorated me, he watched over me." While there are glimpses of other creative talents, like the composer-critic Virgil Thomson, who snoozed next to Tanning while supposedly reviewing a concert, Tanning is best on artists, like the oddball genius Joseph Cornell: " a modern Dante, with his deep religious feeling and physical abstinence. Consummate romantic in an intoxicatingly worldly world, he came frequently to town as from some remote monastic commune." Fans of name-dropping will melt at her wedding with Ernst, a double marriage with Mr. and Mrs. Man Ray, with Stravinsky offering the wedding toast. More noteworthy is Tanning's ready wit, as in the story of a French neighbor's cat who would wait till his master arrived home, then "jumps up on the table and urinates in his soup." Surviving the devastating loss of Ernst, she concludes: "By evening the pall has lifted. Everything waits, radiant. Life is okay." Few surrealists or those close to them would have such a sunny world view, but this vigorous optimism is part of Tanning's real charm, not to mention her ever-improving art and poetry, both of which arrived at a new level of achievement when she was already a senior citizen. Modern art lovers of multiple generations will want this book, as will universities with larger art history collections.

In this memoir, an expansion of Birthday, her 1987 collection of reminiscences, Tanning recounts her life and work. A noted painter and sculptor, Tanning moved in a circle that included some of the 20th century's greatest creative presences. From the worlds of dance, music, and literature, Tanning remembers episodes with Virgil Thomson, George Balanchine, Dylan Thomas, and Truman Capote. Her own artistic milieu included Giacometti, Joseph Cornell, Joan Mir?, and her husband, the surrealist Max Ernst. Never merely gossipy or needlessly name-dropping, Tanning's memoir parades those she met and knew through New York, to New Mexico, to Paris, and back again, after Ernst's death, to New York. In her writing, Tanning achieves, at moments and sometimes for pages at a time, a prose style that is nearly, but not quite, lucid. Unfortunately, her maddeningly "poetic" account provides us with an obstructed view into the world of modern art. A worthwhile but not necessary purchase for collections with a modern art focus. Piquant and candid at 91, Tanning acknowledges that her art has been overshadowed by that of Max Ernst, her husband for 34 years, and her musings on how she feels about this form one of many compelling strands in her meditative reminiscence. Concerned more with psychological truths and ambience than with fact, Tanning uses language like paint, limning scenes dreamy in hue yet acute in detail and metaphoric in their images. A pretty and adventurous girl from Galesburg, Illinois, she took off solo for Chicago, then New York. When she met Ernst (51 to her 32) in 1942, she was painting and supporting herself with fashion illustration, a distraction Ernst freed her from as they embarked on a resilient partnership that took them to rugged Sedona, Arizona, and lovely France, where they painted and cultivated close friendships with fellow artists. Tanning tells marvelously vivid and resonant stories and describes the "never-ending hunt for revealment" that spurs her ongoing creativity. Donna Seaman

You want to have coffe with this artist

Tanning turns out to be not just one of the most under-appreciated artists of her time, but a thoroughly delightful writer. The book is almost whimsical in its telling of her life with and without Max Ernst. Her descriptions of finding her muse, working against inertia, picking up emotional wreckage and continually finding herself anew are inspiring and told in such flowing prose you find yourself wanting to spend an afternoon with this wondrous woman. At the time of this review, she's still alive and kicking at 101 and I thank her so much for her extraordinary paintings, her delightful poetry (still getting published in New Yorker magazine) and this wonderful account of her life as artist/muse/wife and survivor.

I love this book. Ms Tanning writes with such a zest for life and creativity that I find it just spills over and communicates to the reader.

She lived an amzing life and came a long way from sleepy small town America. There was obviously a determination or a restless something at work.

Mosty of all I just enjoy the way she writes - it's a lively quircky style but to me it got across the kind of person I imagine Dorothea Tanning to be.

It Should Have Been So Much More

Indifferent writing, a surprising lack of insight into the incredible milieu in which she moved, and gratuitously catty remarks towards the great Leonora Carrington (an earlier Ernst protege who Tanning apparently feels threatened by 50 years after the fact) mar what should have been a very interesting memoir of a remarkable life. Tanning, Max Ernst's companion of 30 years and a compelling painter in her own right, was at the heart of one of the great artistic movements of the 20th Century, but this work reads like a flat travel log of places gone to and roll call of persons met. The paucity of detail,personal anectdotes, and characterization of any of the luminaries mentioned mark Tanning's bio as a great disappointment.
--A two star book with one star added because any information on this artistic epoch provided by an active participant has to be considered an important contribution.

Rebecca Gilman’s plays include Dollhouse, Spinning into Butter, Boy Gets Girl, Blue Surge, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, and The Glory of Living. Her plays have been produced at the Goodman Theatre, the Royal Court Theatre, Lincoln Center Theater, Joseph Papp’s Public Theater, Manhattan Theatre Club, and Manhattan Class Company Theater. Among other honors and awards, she is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, and her play The Glory of Living was a finalist for the 2001 Pulitzer Prize. Gilman is an assistant professor of playwriting and screenwriting in the MFA program at Northwestern University.

Most strikingly, it is argued that the character Vine is a portrait of Melville’s friend Nathaniel Hawthorne. Clarel is one of the most complex theological explorations of faith and doubt in all of American literature, and this edition brings Melville’s poem to new life.

The aim of this edition of Clarel, volume twelve in the Northwestern-Newberry Edition of The Writing of Herman Melville, is to present a text as close to the authors intention as surviving evidence permits. Based on the only edition published during Melville's lifetime, it adopts 39 correction from a copy marked by Melville and incorporates 154 emendations by the present editors.

About the Author

Herman Melville (1819–91) was an American novelist, short-story writer, poet, and essayist. Melville toiled at various times as a sailor, banker, teacher and finally as a customs inspector. His novels include Typee, Omoo, and White Jacket, all published in authoritative editions by Northwestern University Press. He died in relative obscurity at the age of 72.

Hershel Parker, H. Fletcher Brown Professor Emeritus at the University of Delaware, General Editor of the Northwestern-Newberry Edition of the writings of Herman Melville. His publications include Flawed Texts and Verbal Icons, Reading "Billy Budd,” and the 1995 edition of Melville's Pierre, or, The Ambiguities, illustrated by Maurice Sendak. He is also the author of Herman Melville: A Biography, 1819–1851 and Herman Melville: A Biography, 1851–1891, the first volume a Pulitzer finalist and each the winner of the highest award from the Association of American Publishers' Professional/Scholarly Publishing Division.

A great poem but only for the hardy

Melville is known universally for his single decade of prose, not his three and a half decades dedicated to poetry. In part, this suggests his relative achievement in the two genres. In part, our ignorance stems from the general fate of poetry as it has been almost totally displaced by the novel over the last 200 years. In the case of Clarel, the situation is even more trying: 500 pages (one of the longest poems in any language) of iambic tetrameter are not calculated for popular sale. Indeed, Melville had a growing tendency to push the average reader away especially as his works sold in inverse proportion to his growing skill. Still, this is an epic that informs us about Melville's relation with God and America's relations with religion and the old world. So if you care deeply about him or the ideas which haunt our country, you should read this best edition of the poem.

Herman Melville's Clarel - a 19th C pilgrims' progress?

This is a welcome affordable version of the Northwestern U./Newberry edition of Herman Melville's one epic poem. The poem is a useful window on the views of mid-19th century American Protestants who were neither orthodox nor liberal. Science (including Darwin)(and materialism (or "Mammon")) vs. Faith and the continuing presence in Palestine of Jews, Moslems, Catholics and Greek Orthodox, and tourists (sometimes viewed almost as another sect) are among the subjects of attention for Melville's Euro-American group of pilgrims.

Negatives: 1) the story-line itself is less than gripping and is largely a device to enable the characters to conduct a series of debates.
2) this edition, if my copy is any indication, is poorly bound: five segments of about 20 pages each fell out of the binding. (Despite this fallout, the spine of the book remained uncreased.) Only the first three segments of the book (about 150 of the 530 or so pages) remained intact.

A Problematic But Great Classic

Since no one else has written about Clarel, I thought I'd be nice to Melville and congratulate him on his epic poem. Although the poetry itself isn't always brilliant, I felt that the general tone of melancholic spirituality was powerful. Essentially, to me, Clarel was about a young man questioning his world, and searching for meaning in a seemingly meaningless existence. The book parallels Melville's own travels in Jeruseleum, and with this work, we get a glimpse into Melville's interpretation of spirituality. Highly recommended, considering that it is overshadowed by that other Melville work (Moby Dick, of course!).

This entry in the Historical Dictionaries of Europe series deals with a vulnerable territory once part of Great Moravia, then Hungary, then (except for a brief period during World War II as the first Slovak Republic), Czechoslovakia. The second Slovak Republic was born in 1993 when the CzechoSlovak Federal Assembly voted to dissolve the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic. In 2004 Slovakia became a member of the European Union. Following a lengthy introduction, the book provides A-Z entries for people, events, institutions, and places that figure prominently in this complicated history. The extensive bibliography has been updated to include titles published within the last few years.

About the Author
Stanislav J. Kirschbaum (Ph.D, Universite de Paris) is Professor of Political science and International Studies at York University in Canada. He was born in Bratislava, Slovakia, the largest city in the Slovak Republic. He is a specialist on the politics of Central Europe, particularly communist Czechoslovakia. He has also published A History of Slovakia: The Struggle for Survival with St. Martin's Press.
