About the Author
Paul Rinzler (Doctor of Arts, University of Northern Colorado) teaches music theory and jazz studies classes at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He has played jazz piano professionally for many years and was recently awarded an NEA jazz performance grant. His big band compositions are published by Walrus publishing, and his articles on jazz have appeared in the New Grove's Dictionary of Jazz and the Annual Review of Jazz Studies.

Lots of ideas for the small jazz group

This is quite a remarkable book for its size and is quite unlike most of the other arranging books I've seen. For me it is by far the most useful book I have seen on the subject. (Another that looks quite promising is David Baker's Arranging and Composing for the Small Ensemble: Jazz, R & B, Jazz Rock, though I haven't read it).

As the title suggests, this book is for arranging small ensembles, while the majority of books you find are more directed at arranging for the big band. I play in a small jazz group consisting of trumpet (me), trombone, guitar, double bass, drums. Most of the material you find in a typical arranging book is just not applicable to this situation.

The first thing you will see when flicking through the pages of this book is masses of musical examples from actual recordings (and these are all referenced in the index). Even if you don't know the particular arrangement, just knowing the tune will help to imagine how it would sound with the particular device being described in the text.

The book doesn't spend too much time on three and four part writing (since in a small group there is far less scope for this than in a big band). Instead Rinzler dedicates most space to discussing the form of the song. My only criticism of the book is that it is too brief in parts. I think some concepts could have deserved more text to help explain how to achieve a particular effect. Also the book is largely a compilation of the different tools the arranger has available. It would be nice to see a chapter on putting it all together. In fact there is a brief section where the author takes a lead sheet and then presents an arrangement of the piece, but it would have been nice to see a bit more the process involved rather than just seeing the end product. However, I guess this is where the imagination and skill of the arranger comes in and a lot of this is just experience at combining the various techniques.

If you play in a small group and need some ideas, this is a great book. As far as I can tell, it appears to be one of the few arranging books available which specifically focus on small jazz ensembles.

Not sure...just that I wanted this book. Have only skimmed it and will say that, while I have made little use of it thus far...am very glad to have it.
Money well spent, not a mistake. That we go so far back in time, and that we are unique and not unique...but I like to read of this. And the book offers not just the quotations, but where you can find the entire reference (if possible I think) Mine is 2nd Edition-1986) It's a good treasure hunt too.

Although I have not read the whole book because of its nature, I can say the following:
Miss Jessie Smith did a tremendous job getting information and choosing the notable american black women to be included. My interest in the book was that I found out that it included my paternal grandmother Anna Evans Murray. Her biographical data are very accurate, they coincide with all I knew about her from family sources. She was the wife of another notable black american, Daniel A. P. Murray, my paternal grandfather. I feel proud to own such an important book.

This fascinating new book chronicles such significant twentieth-century technological failures as the Hindenburgh, Love Canal, the Challenger, and thalidomide. Assisted by contributing editor Leonard Bruno, senior science specialist at the Library of Congress, and several distinguished advisers, Schlager has compiled entries on 103 technological disasters in a wide variety of fields. Entries were written by contributors who are experts in science, architecture, and engineering or journalists who specialize in technological subjects.

The book is international in scope and surveys 12 fields, such as automobiles, bridges, dams, and submarines. The fields are arranged alphabetically and within each, entries are arranged chronologically. All are signed and written in a nontechnical style comprehensible to the average educated adult. Each entry is in the same format. A heading notes the place and date of the disaster, and a one-sentence description gives the significance of the incident. A background section relates how the project was designed. This is followed by sections detailing the disaster and the impact it has had on the field. Rounding out each article is a bibliography listing a handful of books and articles, though some are more extensive, e.g., Chernobyl has 18 citations. Appropriately placed throughout the text are approximately 150 black-and-white photographs and line drawings.

Facilitating use of this work is a table of contents with a one-sentence annotation for each entry. The contributors list notes affiliation, expertise area, and publications. A chronology lists the events. Concluding the volume is a bibliography that cites 49 books and a detailed index.

There are a number of reference books on disasters; Man-Made Catastrophes [RBB Ja 1 93] invites comparison. It covers disasters from ancient times to the present, rather than just the twentieth century. There is some duplication in disasters covered, but the two books have different purposes. Man-Made Catastrophes recounts the human tragedy while When Technology Fails emphasizes the technological significance of the event and what we can learn from it. Thus, these two titles are complementary. High-school, college, and public libraries will want to consider adding When Technology Fails to their collections.

Excellent, comprehensive book on modern era disasters!

As a welding/metals inspector, I have both a professional and personal fascination with disasters. I own many books on various construction failures but this book remains one of my favorites. I have read this book cover to cover twice now and often find myself going back to it to reference various disasters.

While this book is not technical in nature (I don't believe you'll see any math formulas in the book), it is very comprehensive and straight forward in the explaining the background, details surrounding the failure, and the subsequent impact.

What separates this book from the many competitors is that it covers such a broad range of topics- from airships to medical catastrophes- and everything in between. And it doesn't just cover the famous (or infamous) disasters which have already been poured over ad nauseam. Though it does include the requisite Hindenburg, Kansas City Hyatt, and Titanic disasters, it also touches on the King Street Bridge and the Dalkon shield.

Though the text is a bit pricey, it is worth every penny and makes a wonderful addition to any library, whether an engineer or just someone with an interest in the mechanics of failure.

Requisite Reading

A most excellent compilation. Thought provoking and sobering material. Should be requisite reading for any Engineer, Project Manager, Operations Director, etc. Would especially recommend it as required reading for Engineering Students. The work often chronicles how various failures were first attributed to the most apparent superficial causes (i.e., the easy fix), but then only after several more failures were the root causes finally investigated, often at great cost both financially and in terms of human cost. Makes you wonder the next time you rush a project, cut some corners, eat away some margin, take some risks, etc...

An absolute "must read" for all technical professionals

A truly riviting book about the many failures of modern time. I couldn't put it down! This book fills in the details of many of the major disasters and accidents that you have read about in the news but provides the reader with the reasons that the technology failed. It's technically accurate without being overly complex. It explains not only what happened in each of the failures, but provides information on why it happened. I found the section on environmental accidents to be thought provoking and insightful. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone working in a technical field.

Although Arab contribution to the sciences is generally well known in the Western world, Arab contributions to the study of gemology are less recognized because of the lack of English-language translations of notable Arab texts.

Scarecrow Press is pleased to present Samar Najm Abul Huda's translation of Ahmad ibn Yusuf al Tifaschi's study of gems. Born in 1184, Al Tifaschi first learned about gems from his father, and augmented his knowledge through readings of Aristotle, Theophrastus, and Pliny, as well as through extensive travels to mines and trading centers. In 1253, he wrote what later became known as the most "methodical and complete" work on precious stones. Gemologists of today are still astounded by the advanced observations that Al Tifaschi made in this work.

The book covers 25 different stones, giving the crystallographic forms and physical properties such as hardness, lustre, and dispersion. The book also describes causes of the formation of gemstones within their mother rocks as well as the characteristics of the mine concerned. Abul Huda's translation of the work includes notations on the translations of Al Tifaschi's work into other languages, as well as background information on Al Tifaschi's world, the well-known gemstones of the 13th century, the gemological terminology used by the medieval Arabs, and notations on other gemstones not mentioned by Al Tifaschi. Includes index, a general bibliography, and illustrations of two precious gemstones in their settings.

Facinating translation showing early gemological knowledge

There is an old story that the Emperor Shah Jahan was sent a large "ruby" by his son Aurangzeb, The Great Moghul. The son who had deposed his father and shut him up in the Red Fort at Agra wished to know if the stone was a true ruby or a "balas" ruby what we know today as a red spinel.

At this time there were a number of famous large rubies known in Europe including the famous Black Prince's Ruby and a large brooch owned by the French crown known as the Four Brothers. European gemological knowledge at this time was not so far advanced as to make the separation between the true and balas stone.

Ms. Huda's facinating translation of Al Tifaschi's "Best Thoughts on the Best of Stones" proves that the Arabs could make the separation as early as the 12th Century. Perhaps Shah Jahan had read his book. This is just one of the many interesting insights in this wonderful little book Highly recommended to anyone interested in the history of jewelry and gemology.

An Excellent Early Treatise on Gemstones

al-Tifaschi's book gives an interesting and impressive picture of medieval Islamic gemology. Particularly interesting is the fact that stones were being identified by hardness and density rather than color, with the result that Islamic gemologists realized, as European did not, that ruby and sapphire were different colors of the same stone. The book is also interesting for detailed price information on stones, especially on pearls, which someone ought to be able to exploit for some sort of scholarly purpose.

On one point I would disagree with the previous reviewer. The European lapidaries did distinguish between ruby and balas ruby.
