Since its founding at Northwestern University in 1964, TriQuarterly has remained one of the most widely admired and important literary magazines in the country. Under the editorial direction of poet Susan Firestone Hahn, TriQuarterly continues to publish the best work of both established and new poets and fiction writers.   TriQuarterly 127 will be guest-edited by Robert Pogue Harrison and Susan Stewart and will feature contemporary Italian poetry in translation. Of Italy the editors write, “It seems as if every third person in this nation writes, and every fourth person publishes, poetry.” Harrison and Stewart cull, in the original and in translation, the best of this literary explosion.

poetry from the catacombs
By mi456
In their introduction to this volume, the editors tell us that for Italian poets today, "writing poetry is a way of going underground, into the catacombs, so to speak." The poets work in isolation, as "single, self-referential voices." This volume has managed to bring together a compelling selection of these scattered voices, revealing the extraordinary vitality of contemporary Italian poetry. Each poem is presented in the original Italian and in English translation on the facing page. The translations are faithful renderings of the originals, and excellent poems in themselves. Poets included are Edoardo Albinati, Antonella Anedda, Luigi Ballerini, Patrizia Cavalli, Milo de Angelis, Alba Donati, Fabrizio Falconi, Roberto Gigliucci, Rosaria Lo Russo, Valerio Magrelli, Lucio Mariani, Alda Merini, Giovanni Raboni, Davide Rondoni, Edoardo Sanguineti, Patrizia Valduga, Paolo Valesio, Andrea Zanzotto, Paolo Frigerio, Giulio Marzaioli, Nicola Dal Falco, Massimo Scrignoli, Nina Maroccolo and Maria Castronuovo. As I read through the volume, I found that each of these "single voices" was a revelation. The poems the editors have chosen are tremendously varied, but share a certain strength of voice and a commitment to the beauty of language. Any poetry lover, whether or not they read Italian, should own this volume.

This tale of a young woman's not-so-sentimental education is the story of fifteen-year-old Lolenka, who encounters an exiled radical named Veretitsyn and begins to question her education and life. Under his influence, Lolenka breaks with tradition and embarks upon a new life as a translator and an artist, but a chance meeting with Veretitsyn years later leads to a sobering reappraisal of her mentor's convictions.

From Publishers Weekly
This slender, realistic and powerfully dramatic tale was first published in Russia in 1861 by a writer well known in her day who has since fallen into obscurity. The title character is Lolenka, a dutiful 15-year-old schoolgirl living in the provincial city of N, who is dangerously swayed by the bitterly irreverent speeches of her neighbor, a handsome, exiled poet consigned to a numbing job as a copyist. Veretitsyn, who has been censored by the authorities as an example of a "harmful trend" in society, is throwing his life away in self-pity and derision. He is in love with a paragon of kindness and beauty, Sofya Khmelevskaya, but she won't have him. When he sees Lolenka across the fence, reciting her lessons, Veretitsyn decides to make her as miserable as he is. He cynically interrogates her about her schoolwork, pointing out how mechanically she is being taught. Susceptible Lolenka experiences doubt for the first time in her life, and, taken with Veretitsyn, she intentionally flunks her exams and refuses to marry the odious suitor chosen for her. A break in the narration brings the reader to St. Petersburg eight years later, where Lolenka, now a painter and feminist espousing the modern ways, reencounters her nemesis, whose unrequited love for Sofya has tempered his driving anger. Clearly grappling with social and cultural currents such as the supplanting of traditional values and the quality of education for women, Khvoshchinskaya (1824-1889), who published under the masculine pseudonym V. Kretovsky, fits squarely among her contemporaries Turgenev and Dostoyevski. Despite the sometimes stilted language, her characters are fallible and thus completely believable: Veretitsyn leaps off the page and his passion for Sofya is palpable. Khvoshchinskaya's brief and vivid story is like a sharply composed snapshot. Here is a writer to learn more about. (Jan.)

From Booklist
The first English translation of this little-known novella, originally published in 1861, tells the tale of Lolenka, a provincial schoolgirl, and her interactions with exiled poet Veretitsyn in the Russian countryside. Moreover, the story chronicles the education of young women in Russia during that period, and Khvoshchinskaya indicts those methods for being reactionary and insipid. The more that Lolenka is exposed to Veretitsyn, the more she begins to despise the petty bourgeois lifestyle she has known throughout her life. Veretitsyn offers reading suggestions, beginning with Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Lolenka is moved, not with the love story, but with the freedom and willful abandon of the characters. Lolenka becomes engrossed in her extracurricular books and begins to fail at school, "forgetting all she has known." Her exasperated parents are concerned only with keeping up appearances and have her betrothed to a young man with a prosperous future. We meet both Veretitsyn and Lolenka for the last time eight years later; nothing has turned out as expected, but all has ended well. Michael Spinella

The Woman Question
By Allison L. Ryall
This book deals primarily with the evaulation of women's education in Russian society in the 19th century in response to the Woman Question. It is a fastinating book and in many ways is still applicable to the women's movement today.

A Good Book
By Tracy
I really enjoyed The Boarding-School Girl! I will be going to a boarding school this year, and this book really helped me prepare for school. I liked this book more than the other books I have read to prepare me for school, because this one had a story to it. I highly recommend this book to anyone who plans on going to a boarding school, or collage.

dont waste ur time
By hocus pocus
this book has nothing to do with boarding schools. it talks about a 15 year old girl who's life's ruined by her neighbor Veretitsyn, who started questioning her about her education getting her all confused which led her to failing all her exams. he drove her to a miserable life. but then they meet again after 8 years in Petersburg where she becomes happy again as an artist with a new life.

How to Make a Soul: The Wisdom of John Keats, by Eric G. Wilson

In this innovative hybrid of biography, memoir, and criticism, Eric G. Wilson describes how John Keats gave him solace during a bout of mental illness in spring 2012. While on a tour of the principal sites in Keats’s life—ranging from his London medical school to the small room in Rome where he died—Wilson discovered analogies between the poet’s troubles and his own. He was most struck by Keats’s enlivening vision of the soul.

For Keats, we don’t possess but rather make a soul. We do this by imaginatively transforming our suffering into empathy toward humans and nature alike. Tracking this idea in Keats’s tumultuous yet exhilarating life and work, Wilson struggles to envision his depression anew, desperate to overcome the apathy alienating him from his family.

How to Make a Soul offers fresh perspectives on Keats’s pragmatism, irony, comedy, ethics, and aesthetics, but is above all a lyrical celebration of those galvanizing instances when life springs into art.

Bandido: The Death and Resurrection of Oscar

The Hispanic Malcolm X. Writer. Activist. Civil rights attorney. Obese, dark-skinned, and angry. Man with a surplus of personality. Man of vision. All the above describe Oscar "Zeta" Acosta. El Paso-born, Acosta became a leading figure in the Chicano rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s, winning landmark decisions in civil rights cases as an attorney. As a tireless writer and activist, he had a profound influence on his contemporaries. He seemed to be everywhere at once, knowing everyone in "el movimiento" and involving himself in many of its key moments. Tumultuous and prone to excess, he is the Samoan in Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. In 1974, after a last phone call to his son, Acosta disappeared in the Mexican state of Mazatlán.

Hailed as "a fine, learned homage" (Kirkus), "a kaleidoscopic portrait" (Booklist), and "a game of mirrors" (The Washington Post), Bandido is a veritable tour de force. Through interviews and Acosta's writings (published and unpublished), Ilan Stavans reconstructs--even reinvents--the man behind the myth. Part biographical appraisal, part reflection on the legacy of the Civil Rights era, Bandido is an opportunity to understand the challenges and pitfalls Latinos face in finding a place of their own in America.

Mistitled and Often Misconceived
By Neil Herring
This "biography" actually purports to review all of Zeta's life, not just the sequelae of his death. It is disconcertingly disorganized, often jumping from one time period to another, or from one topic to another. As the author did not know Acosta personally, some of his speculations are academically unjustifiable--e.g., that Zeta was driven by insecurity about the size of his penis. And it has too many factual errors, especially in describing Zeta's work on political legal cases. (I was there; I know who did the work, and I certainly know the names of the cases, which Stavans gets wrong half the time.) While it contains much interesting data, this book needed a fact checker and--more than anything--a neutral editor.

A fine example of Village Prose from the post-Stalin era, Farewell to Matyora decries the loss of the Russian peasant culture to the impersonal, soulless march of progress.

It is the final summer of the peasant village of Matyora. A dam will be completed in the fall, destroying the village. Although their departure is inevitable, the characters over when, and even whether, they should leave. A haunting story with a heartfelt theme, Farewell to Matyora is a passionate plea for humanity and an eloquent cry for a return to an organic life.

Review
"Remarkable. . . . Rasputin is the kind of writer of whom Chekhov, that most sensible of all Russian writers, would have approved--a man linked to the soil through its people, apolitical without being nihilistic, profoundly humane." --Christian Science Monitor

"Farewell to Matyora is, next to Solzhenitsyn's One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich and 'Matryona's Home,' the most important work of literature written and published in the Soviet Union between Stalin's death in 1953 and the beginning of glasnost in 1985." --Kathleen Parthé

Farewell to Matyora is Grand!
By Maximillian Ben Hanan
Valentin Rasputin's "Farewell to Matyora" is an outstanding work of Russian literature that I highly recommend. Of course, such novels are better read in their native language, but for those of us who don't read Russian (I fortunately do!), this novel may be one of the only English-language translations available and, as such, is a great boon.
Valentin Rasputin has been called one of the most important voices of the post-Stalin era of Soviet literature. Indeed, it has been compared to Solzhenitsyn's masterpieces "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovitch" and "Matyora's Home." One of Rasputin's shining graces is that he openly exposes the inward charms of Russian character and culture.
The story itself is about the destruction of a village to make way for a Soviet hydroelectric dam project. The dynamics between the older and younger members of the village and their feelings about their imminent departure from a place that has been home to them their whole lives forms the central conflict and interest of the novel. At the same time, the author reveals some of the deep-seated values about the relationship between man and nature that are key to Russian culture.
The blurbs on the back of the novel had a statement that I wanted to share:
"A haunting story with a heartfelt theme, `Farwell to Matyora' is a passionate plea for humanity and an eloquent cry for a return to an organic life."
My strongest criticism of the novel is that the translator in many places seemed to come up short with ways to adequately portray the nuance and charm that are some of Rasputin's strongest charms in his native Russian. In many places the English translation did a very poor job of conveying the Russian meaning. I compared the Russian original to the English translation several times throughout the novel. I feel that the translator simply wasn't up to the task although I certainly don't think I could do a better one. Translation is an art, and, at that, a fickle one.
One of my favorite little phrases that the translator decided to keep was "Japanese Gods," which is a euphemism for cursing in Russian that a charming old codger of a character frequently repeats in his efforts to keep from actually cursing around another character that he considers is a "lady."
Read "Farewell to Matyora" because it's a charming novel for a lover of Russian literature. I highly recommend it.

I loved this book.
By MNReader
Beautifully written. There's a magical realism element to this story that took me to places I didn't expect to go. I don't know too much about Russian history, but it spoke to me of how the life of the Russian peasant didn't change much from the time of the Tsars to the time of the Soviets. I think the author knew his subjects well and wrote with authority. He bared the souls of his characters and in the process opened their lives to me. I haven't read much Russian fiction but will be doing so in the future.

Almost Unbearably Moving - A Masterpiece
By Dale W. Boyer
Farewell to Matyora is an exceptionally beautiful and poignant novel. A story about one of those Russian villages flooded when Russia built a series of hydro-electric dams under Stalin, Valentin Rasputin's book is composed of the remembrances of Darya and a few other elderly villagers facing their last summer in their ancestral home. The tale is deeply affecting (Darya's distress at not being able to move the graves of her ancestors at the end will bring tears to the eyes of anyone who has recently lost someone), and the scene of her in the graveyard on the last night, as well as the one of her cleaning and whitewashing her house on its last day, is almost unbearably moving. This book goes on that very short list of my 5-10 favorite books of all time.

Melville Biography: An Inside Narrative, by Hershel Parker

Melville Biography: An Inside Narrative is Hershel Parker’s history of the writing of Melville biographies, enriched by his intimate working relationships with great Melvilleans, dead and living. The first part is a mesmerizing autobiographical account of what went into creating his award-winning two-volume life of Herman Melville. Next, Parker traces six decades the persistent war New Critics have waged against biographical scholarship on Melville. American literary critics, he finds, impose New Critical theories of organic unity on Melville’s disrupted career even while truncating his body of work and minimizing his aesthetic interests. Parker celebrates the "divine amateurs" who use new technology to discover dazzling Melville stories and also lauds the writers of literature blogs as potential redeemers of academic and mainstream media reviewing. In the third part, Parker invites readers into his biographical workshop and challenges them with ambitious research assignments. Throughout this bold book, Parker seeks to reinvigorate the all-but-lost art of scholarly literary criticism and biography.

Review
Hershel Parker's Melville Biography: An Inside Narrative is the cap-stone to the vital contributions he has made to the stony field of Herman Melville scholarship. The book infuses humor, irony, and scholarly insight to the art of understanding Melville and his entire body of work, along with a sobering survey of Melville scholarship from the past 100 hundred years (both its groundbreaking accomplishments and its more corrosive counterparts). This book stands as a stoic testament to a field of research flamed solely by zeal and Spartan tenacity. Parker's process arrives to the truth of the matter in a field littered with the rambling surmises of New Critics hoping to eradicate authorial insight in favor of critical skewerings. Parker not only stands for the tried and true ways of literary tradition, but also embraces the potential of the Internet and blogging to enable the potential of new information as well as finding new ways to reach an audience that continues to expand generation after generation. Herman Melville: An Inside Narrative has reshaped my own aesthetic and technique toward literary biography as well as brought new appreciation for Hershel Parker and that ungraspable phantom, the spirit of Herman Melville, that fuels the entire scope of his scholarly cosmos. --Paul Maher--Author of Kerouac: His Life and Work and Jack Kerouac's American Journey: The Real-Life Odyssey of On the Road.

Melville Biography: An Inside Narrative takes us on an extraordinary journey through the life and mind of Hershel Parker, the world's greatest Melville scholar. Parker vividly retraces his decades as workaday Champollion when he dug through libraries from New Orleans to Hampstead Heath, sacrificing his eyes on newspaper microfilm and 19th-century handwriting as he sussed out the details of the artistic development and financial struggles of Herman Melville. From his harvest of hundreds of primary documents, Parker then wove their revelations into his authoritative and compelling two-volume biography (1996 and 2002).Parker s life's work illustrates Beethoven's great maxim, that genius is the art of taking pains. In Melville Biography Parker frankly describes the uproar his serial revelations about Melville's life created within the clubby little world of self-anointed and self-important Melville critics, all strangers to the archives. This new book will enthrall not just Melville fans, but all fans of great literature. It is must reading for anyone who aspires to research a credible, fact-based biography. It is also must reading for anyone who cares about creating great art, for in its tales of triumph, conflict, and suppression at long last overcome, can be found all that one puts at hazard in setting out on such an unfashionable voyage. In Melville Biography, Parker embodies the title of another book on life-writing, Biography as High Adventure. --James Hime, Edgar finalist for The Night of the Dance, author of other Jeremiah Spur mysteries and the Kindle Book, Three Thousand Bridges.

Imagine our gain if Richard Ellmann had reflected in a book on his lives of Yeats, Wilde, and Joyce. Like Ellmann, Parker has devoted his career to biography, and now in this Inside Narrative offers his harvests of biographical research and thought. Never before has a literary biographer reflected as deeply and frankly on the craft of life-writing and the fate of a documentary biography as Parker does in this companion to his two-volume Herman Melville: A Biography. Lovers of literary biography will rejoice at the revelations of Parker s arduous research, his stunning discoveries, his dazzling handling of mundane evidence, and his hard-won theoretical convictions. Melville Biography: An Inside Narrative is part autobiography and historiography of Melville biography; part exposé of the follies of ahistorical writings on Melville by disciples of the New Criticism and their archivophobic successors; and part a series of exemplary demonstrations of a biographer at work, profiting from evolving online and digital archival resources as well as his decades of traditional archival research. Melville Biography leaves us knowing Herman Melville more intimately than ever, points new researchers toward biographical riches on Melville yet unexplored, offers practical guidance and heartfelt inspiration to any life-writer, and enriches all lovers of literary biography. --Robert A. Sandberg Discoverer- transcriber of Melville s House of the Tragic Poet and design editor for The New Melville Log.

Fascinating and Beautifully Written!
By J O'Connell
If you have any interest in Melville, Moby-Dick, literary biography ... or beautiful, lucid prose, Professor Parker's magnificent new book is for you. I can't recommend it highly enough. Imagine: A brilliant scholar who can write! No wonder Parker understands Melville better than any of the many Melvillians working today--he is a fellow writer. The book is chock-full of so many illuminating and fascinating elements. Whether he is explaining to us--always so clearly and entertainingly--what he knows of Melville's hotel dinner with Hawthorne, at which HM presented one of the first copies of Moby-Dick to its deidcatee, and how he knows it, or elucidating the enormity of the cost HM (and his family) paid for his genius and it manifestation on paper, Parker is always your favorite college lecturer--wise, informed, enthused, reasoned, often funny, and empathetic. He desires to tell you why he loves Melville and why you will, too. Parker also knows the value of archival research--and the hours and miles logged during the creation of his definitive two-volume life of HM are stunning. Mr. Parker has the ability to convey the excitement of the true research scholar in the moment of "the find," as in this passage: "There will always be a few literary detectives who devote months or years to the pursuit of documents in the confidence that at last they will sit at midnight in a little bare motel room in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and turn through a big shoebox full of what looks like only bills of lading until they spy a blue folded paper, clearly a letter, a letter with the signature `Really Thine, H Melville'..."
Melville, our greatest novelist, deserves Parker, our greatest biographer. My own opinion is that Parker was robbed of the Pulitzer for Herman Melville: A Biography. Is it too much to hope that the Pulitzer committee corrects its mistake by selecting Melville Biography: An Inside Narrative for next year's prize?

A Good Time Coming
By Yankee Reader
Parker's new book was on display at MLA in Boston earlier this month (Jan 2013), so I bought one of the copies on the spot. Much controversy surrounded Parker's earlier two-volume biography of Melville, and I wanted to see how Parker would shape his public justification in this work. The book accomplishes that, but in the larger context of Parker's own life of scholarship and continuing discoveries in Melville Biography.

Parker could have published his central section, the exposure of bad scholarship and irresponsible reviewing, without going farther, but the presence of Parts I and III shows the process of scholarship and its fruits in a way that goes far beyond the structured arguments of Part II. Many years ago from Randall's DUKEDOM LARGE ENOUGH I recognized the joy of book collecting and the value of early editions to the scholar. Parker's book should stimulate an equal appreciation of the scholar's life and work at the same time he increases our appreciation of Melville's.

MELVILLE BIOGRAPHY: AN INSIDE NARRATIVE functions as both prologue and epilogue to Herman Melville: A Biography (Herman Melville: A Biography (Volume 1, 1819-1851), Herman Melville: A Biography (Volume 2, 1851-1891)), as Parker's Melville: The Making of the Poet expands his second volume of the big biography. Parker's work compares to that of the great Shakespeare scholars: E. K. Chambers, who in volume after volume established the modern understanding of Shakespeare and his theatre, S. Schoenbaum, who sorted out Shakespeare's lives, and Andrew Gurr, the modern Chambers. None of these had to deal with the resistance Parker did when presenting his profound research, including paradigm-shifting discoveries that were ignored or denied by his reviewers. Hereafter, as Melville said about a contemporary writer, "a grateful posterity will take the best care" of Hershel Parker.

Inspired and inspirational
By Paul Seydor
Melville Biography: An Inside Narrative is Hershel Parker's answer to numerous requests for a one volume version of his magisterial two volume biography of Herman Melville. Reasoning, plausibly, that the moment a single volume appeared, no one would read the original, Professor Parker gives us instead this splendid, wholly new book, which is actually several books in one, among them a biography of a biography; an autobiography of the biographer retracing all the many paths, places, departures, travels, destinations, by ways, swings, and roundabouts, both actual and virtual, by which writers get to know and become intimate with their subject; an odyssey, at once intellectual, spiritual, and deeply personal, of an esteemed literary critic and scholar engaging, grappling, and struggling with some of the largest, most important and central issues of scholarship and criticism of the past century. Parker, a brilliant thinker, can match the most arcane theorists on their own turf, but his is no dry, academic tome: written with verve, style, breathless energy, and unflagging enthusiasm (in the best Emersonian sense of that word), this book is also a stunning critique and stinging rebuke to half a century of critical theory and practice, both inside the academy and outside it in the world of book reviewing and commentary, beginning with the New Criticism and going through structuralism, deconstructionism, postmodernism, to the New Historicism, movements that seek to strip literature and the other arts of every human, social, cultural, and historical context except that of the work itself as an aesthetic object or structure. Arguing against so called "organic unity"--which, as it grew out of the New Criticism, should really be called "hermetically sealed unity"--Parker seeks to restore criticism and scholarship to the study of that far more human and humane, to say nothing of real, unity: that of the artist, his thoughts, his ideas, his feelings, his beliefs, his circumstances, his life and times, and how he transmuted these through the mysteries of talent, imagination, and genius into timeless works of art. Passionate, combative, blazingly eloquent, fearlessly frank and candid, and, yes, there's no sense using lesser words, inspired and inspirational, not least in his celebration of the joys and rewards of old fashioned--that is, patient, dogged, committed, tireless--research, Parker here demonstrates once again that he is a peerless Melvillian, a standard setting scholar, and a truly great critic.

Acquiring independence from Britain in 1867, the new nation of Canada was establishing itself as a separate continental society. It was a time of westward expansion and technological change. The Canadian-Pacific railroad (1885) led the push to the prairies and the Pacific coast, and Canadian-born Alexander Graham Bell unveiled the invention (1876) that would revolutionize communications. By 1890, and for the three decades that followed, a new literary nationalism ran up against the blunt experiences of war, immigration and poverty, as well as political and social unrest. Canadian writers covered in this DLB volume include this new generation of writers which was about to turn Canadian writing in several different directions. 96 entries include: Grant Allen,Neree Beauchemin,Bliss Carman,Frank Parker Day,Albert Ferland,Martin Allerdale Grainger,Grey Owl,Andrew Macphail,E.J. Prat,Robert Service,Ernest Thompson Seton,Arthur Stringer,Joanna Ellen Wood.

Published Poems: The Writings of Herman Melville Vol. 11, by Herman Melville

Although he surprised the world in 1866 with his first published book of poetry, Battle-Pieces and Aspects of the War, Herman Melville had long been steeped in poetry. This new offering in the authoritative Northwestern-Newberry series, The Writings of Herman Melville, with a historical note by Hershel Parker, is testament to Melville the poet. Penultimate in the publication of the series, Published Poems follows the release of Melville’s verse epic, Clarel (1876), and with it, contains the entirety of the poems published during Melville’s lifetime: Battle-Pieces, as well as John Marr and Other Sailors, with Some Sea-Pieces (1888), and Timoleon Etc. (1891).

Battle-Pieces and Aspects of the War has long been recognized as a great contribution to the poetry of the Civil War, comparable only to Whitman’s Drum-Taps. Its idiosyncrasies, many of them grounded in British poetry, kept it from immediate popularity, but it was not the production of a novice. Melville had made himself over into a poet in the late 1850s and had tried to publish a previous collection of poetry—now lost—in 1860.

John Marr and Other Sailors is a retrospective nautical book. Its portraits of sailors were influenced by Melville’s own experience of aging as well as by his long acquaintance with wasted mariners at the Sailors’ Snug Harbor on Staten Island, where his brother was governor.

The book modulates into "Sea-Pieces," including the grisly "Maldive Shark" and "To Ned," a powerful reflection on how Melville’s personal adventures with the Typee islanders in 1842 had accrued rich historical significance over the decades.

Thematically less unified, Timoleon Etc. contains poems with many European and exotic settings from ancient to modern times. The most famous are "After the Pleasure Party" and "The Age of the Antonines." Published in the last year of Melville’s life, some of the poems were first written many years earlier; for example, Melville copied "The Age of the Antonines" out for his brother-in-law in 1877, describing it as something found in a bundle of old papers. One whole section seems to have been almost entirely salvaged from the unpublished 1860 volume of poetry. As with the other volumes in the Northwestern-Newberry series, the aim of this edition of Published Poems is to present a text as close to the author’s intention as surviving evidence permits. To that end, the editorial appendix includes a historical note by Hershel Parker, the dean of Melville scholars, which gives a compelling, in-depth account of how one of America’s greatest writers grew into the vocation of a poet; an essay by G. Thomas Tanselle on the printing and publishing history of the works in Published Poems; a textual record that identifies the copy-texts for the present edition and explains the editorial policy; and substantial scholarly notes on individual poems.

About the Author
Herman Melville (1819-91), the American novelist, reviewer, short-story writer, poet, and essayist, worked at various times as a teacher, sailor, farmer, and (for nineteen years) as a customs inspector. He died at seventy-two, in relative obscurity, still in the course of publishing his poetry in small, privately printed editions and with Billy Budd, Sailor not yet completed. In addition to his masterpiece, Moby-Dick, Melville wrote several notable novels and books of poetry. With the publication of Published Poems and the forthcoming "Billy Budd, Sailor" and Other Late Manuscripts, all will have been published in a comprehensive Northwestern-Newberry Edition.

Meville's poetry presented with scholarly largesse
By Amazon Customer
Elegantly edited, handsomely composed and printed, with more information about the creation and context of Melville's shorter poems that you might have thought possible. Herschel Parker's "historical note" is actually a reprint (slightly modified) of his book on Melville's poetry, and it's a delight, although possibly more detailed than a casual reader might expect. But this is a serious book for serious readers. Anyone who cares about Melville--anyone who cares about American literature--will want to spend time with it.

Complete, as usual
By Emily Ravenwood
The northwestern-newberry editions are the definitive scholarly editions, and this one is typically careful and complete; the section on notes, revisions and marginalia is especially valuable. One wishes, of course, to take Parker's own perspective and grindable axes into account when reading the section on Melville's career progress as a poet. This volume includes _Battle-Pieces_, _John Marr_, and _Timoleon_. It does not include the unpublished collection _Weeds and Wildings with a Rose or Two_, we're going to have to pay through the nose for that separately whenever it finally comes out.
