Since its founding at Northwestern University in 1964, TriQuarterly has remained one of the most widely admired and important literary magazines in the country. Under the editorial direction of poet Susan Firestone Hahn, TriQuarterly continues to publish the best work of both established and new poets and fiction writers. TriQuarterly 127 will be guest-edited by Robert Pogue Harrison and Susan Stewart and will feature contemporary Italian poetry in translation. Of Italy the editors write, “It seems as if every third person in this nation writes, and every fourth person publishes, poetry.” Harrison and Stewart cull, in the original and in translation, the best of this literary explosion.

poetry from the catacombs
By mi456
In their introduction to this volume, the editors tell us that for Italian poets today, "writing poetry is a way of going underground, into the catacombs, so to speak." The poets work in isolation, as "single, self-referential voices." This volume has managed to bring together a compelling selection of these scattered voices, revealing the extraordinary vitality of contemporary Italian poetry. Each poem is presented in the original Italian and in English translation on the facing page. The translations are faithful renderings of the originals, and excellent poems in themselves. Poets included are Edoardo Albinati, Antonella Anedda, Luigi Ballerini, Patrizia Cavalli, Milo de Angelis, Alba Donati, Fabrizio Falconi, Roberto Gigliucci, Rosaria Lo Russo, Valerio Magrelli, Lucio Mariani, Alda Merini, Giovanni Raboni, Davide Rondoni, Edoardo Sanguineti, Patrizia Valduga, Paolo Valesio, Andrea Zanzotto, Paolo Frigerio, Giulio Marzaioli, Nicola Dal Falco, Massimo Scrignoli, Nina Maroccolo and Maria Castronuovo. As I read through the volume, I found that each of these "single voices" was a revelation. The poems the editors have chosen are tremendously varied, but share a certain strength of voice and a commitment to the beauty of language. Any poetry lover, whether or not they read Italian, should own this volume.
