About the Author
John M. Kean, Professor of Curriculum and Instruction, University of Wisconsin-Madison, has taught and published articles on children's and young adult literature, the teaching of writing, and censorship in the schools. He has been a member and chair of the NCTE Committee Against Censorship and a member of the CEE Commission on Intellectual Freedom and the IRA Advisory Committee on Intellectual Freedom. The late Lee Burress, Professor Emeritus, English, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, taught and published on American literature, folklore, composition, and literary censorship and was a member and chair of the NCTE Committee Against Censorship. He was author, co-author, or co-editor of Battle of the Books (Scarecrow, 1989); Celebrating Censored Books (with Nicholas Karolides); How Censorship Affects the School and Other Essays; and The Student's Right to Know (with Edward Jenkinson). Nicholas Karolides is Professor of English and Associate Dean, College of Arts and Sciences, University of Wisconsin-River Falls. His recent books include Reader Response in the Classroom, Evoking and Interpreting Literature in the Classroom, Focus on Physical Impairments, and Focus on Fitness (with Melissa Karolides).

Santiago Zabala is a visiting scholar at Johns Hopkins University. He is the author of The Remains of Being (2009) and The Hermeneutic Nature of Analytic Philosophy (2004) and editor of Weakening Philosophy (2007) and Richard Rorty and Gianni Vattimo’s The Future of Religion (2005). His forthcoming book, coauthored with Gianni Vattimo, is Hermeneutic Communism.

The Union League Club of Chicago is unique among the country's 2,000 city clubs in its rich mix of civic, artistic, and charitable missions. In 1893, Club leaders saved and then presented the incomparable World's Columbian Exposition to 27 million awed visitors. Today the walls of its 23-story clubhouse are gilded with a noted art collection whose pieces overlook elegant dining rooms as well as offices for its four Boys & Girls clubs and two other charitable foundations. However, the Club history also has its darker chapters. Half the members of the Club board of directors in 2003--Jews, blacks, women--would have been neither eligible not acceptable for membership a half-century earlier. About the Author
James D. Nowlan is a senior fellow with the University of Illinois Institute of Government and Public Affairs. He is also the author of A New Game Plan for Illinois (Neltnor House, 1989), and a novel, The Itinerant: A Heartland Story (Conversation Press, 2000), and co-author with Samuel K. Gove of Illinois Politics and Government: The Expanding Metropolitan Frontier (Nebraska, 1996).

Jim Nowlan, after three years of intensive research, has finished his history of the Union League Club of Chicago. The League history is a fascinating insight into Chicago and Illinois state politics and progress - from Adler to Yerkes.

Jim worked on the book while concurrently maintaining a staggering workload, including the rebirth of "The Stark County News," teaching at the University of Illinois, serving on many state and local committees and constantly responding to reporters and politi-cians in need of his insightful comments on the current state of Illinois Republican Party debacles.

Jim was a member of the University Club but, after completing the book, resigned and joined the Union League Club. As Jim puts it, "I don't think I would have found the club attractive at all in the period of the 1930s into the 1970s. In fact, I joined the University Club in 1981 because it was the first club to admit women, as I recall, in the Chicago area region. And while that wasn't a litmus test, it seemed a little more progressive than the Union League Club, which would have probably been the primary competitor of those two clubs, which seemed to reach out to similar types of young, upwardly mobile professionals and middle-aged folks. But today, the Un-ion League Club seems to be quite progressive in its policies towards its mission; in fact, this is not a litmus test for me either. I think that they just admitted their first openly gay member, which would cause members from the 1940s to just twirl in their graves.

"The early club was an alternative to the very stuffy Chicago clubs, and there were other clubs like the Union League Club that were ports in the storm from the muck out in the street for people who needed to do business over lunch and simply wanted a refined setting in which to do it. I think the Union League Club is different in that it originally had a civic mission, which it has maintained.

"The Union League Club, probably through its Public Affairs [Committee] and Boys and Girls Clubs and maybe to some extent its Civics and Arts Foundation, does give the members who want to be active, opportunities to utilize, through the club, to be involved in good works, and a very high percentage contribute, and within that percentage quite a few actually participate directly. And I found that to be valuable, those activities to be valuable dimensions of the club, although many other non-profit groups do similar kinds of things. But it is nice to see a club with good purposes."

"I think the club, and I think I said so in the final chapter, probably needs to find a mission or an issue for this age and burnish or re-vise the tradition being a mover and shaker on something important and valuable to the city or to the state.

Jim was raised, as his dad was, a very conservative Republican, but says, "I'm kind of a mushy moderate as I age." Jennifer Davis of the Peoria Journal Star describes Jim as a jack-of-all-trades. She includes in his credentials: a term as an Illinois legislator; an "almost" lieutenant governor; a director of state agencies; an adviser to presidential, congressional and gubernatorial candidates; professor; au-thor; newspaperman; editor and publisher; community activist; and philosopher.

Jim says that during the recent senatorial race, he was contacted for his opinion seven or eight times a week by the media and political insiders. He also feels that although there is in the media abundant information on national and local politics, there is sparse coverage of Illinois state political affairs. He feels he can fill that niche with a syndicated column with his Midwest viewpoint. He currently offers his "op-ed" (opinion editorials) to Crain's and to a small newspaper group.

Currently he is wrestling to make his three newspapers work and will be giving much of his time for the next two years at the U of I at Urbana, where he is a senior fellow and will be directing a fellows program entitled "Civic Leadership," where he'll work with the best and the brightest. Jim's book, "Inside State Government," is practically required reading for new state executives.

Also, the Union League Public Affairs Committee and Ann Lucine, a member and professor of law at John Marshall, have created a committee that will anticipate a forthcoming state constitutional requirement to review the extant state constitution and see if it should be revisited with another constitutional convention. Jim has been identified as chair of the committee.

On top of all of these accomplishments, Jim's second novel, "The Editor's Wife," will be published soon. Once again, Jim takes a story from his own colorful and accomplished past. The book takes place in 1952 in a town modeled after Mount Pulaski, Illinois. The three main characters, as they were in "The Itinerant," are taken from Jim's memory. The "old man politician" is patterned after Jim's own grandfather with a touch of Paul Powell's persona thrown in. The son is perhaps a blend of Jim and his father, and the editor's wife is modeled after one of Jim's old girlfriends. Blended in is an interracial affair and two sets of mobsters, Chicago West Side poli-ticians and the Italians.

The multifaceted personality of Jim comes through preeminently in his editorials in the Stark County News, where his admiration for his hometown and the solid Midwest morality of his roots shines forth.

About the Author
The late Berton Coffin's teachings and writings established him as an international authority on vocal pedagogy. Professor Emeritus, University of Colorado, Boulder, he also lived and taught in Europe from 1976 to 1983―in his private studio in Vienna; during summers with the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria; and in twenty-one opera houses in Austria, Denmark, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. He presented master classes in the United States and in Europe and served as a visiting professor of voice at U.S. universities. Dr. Coffin, baritone, held academic and professional music degrees from Columbia University, Eastman School of Music, Chicago Musical College, and Earlham College.

I studied personally with Dr. Coffin

Dr. Coffin took my broken voice (caused by incorrect teaching by former teachers), put it back together within my 2 years graduate study with him, and added an octave to my upper range. I enjoyed 30 years as a professional singer and am still singing well at age 65. My private voice students voices are developed quickly and remarkably using Dr. Coffin's exercises. I can't recommend this book enough. One must learn the International Phonetic Alphabet and apply it in the exercises and the book can be quite technical, but years of application in my voice as well as my students has me completely sold on it's merits. This book is for the serious voice student who is willing to work at his/her craft.

Great Technical Guide for Vocal Exercises

My voice teacher works with me out of this book, and she recommended that I buy it myself. I learned a great deal from all of the technical knowledge contained within its pages, though the reading can be a bit dry. At any rate, I think the book is worth its own weight in gold just for the exercises, which are specialized for either the male or female singer. I must agree with J.R. Knowles' review, though, in that it is best to have a teacher who can guide and listen to the singer through the exercises.

Also, ordering this book off of Amazon means a discounted price on top of not paying extra for Coffin's vowel register chart. The chart, normally $16 or $18 separately, comes with!

Please note that I am only a young vocalist and, of course, have limited experience. However, from my research, Berton Coffin is/was an acclaimed vocal pedagogue whose studies contributed much to the study of vocal production, and thus this book is recommended by professionals. The book certainly helps me in developing solid vocal technique and understanding the voice.

♫ Maximize Resonance, Minimize Effort!

The author of this complex work, Dr. Berton Coffin, was the President of NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing.) He is recognized and beloved by many for his excellent research and support of that organization.

▲ This book is one of the most complex, extensive, and under-utilized books in all of voice theory. My guess is that 98% of all voice students do not use this book, but it's their loss! I have studied and re-studied this book DOZENS OF TIMES and still have to study more! As I look it over again, may head is spinning! It's not that the book is wrong; rather that it's SO MUCH to digest!

▲ The theme is this: A singer can manipulate the muscles of the month and tongue, along with larynx height, so as to achieve the maximum possible resonance, for the smallest effort. Here's the key: "Bring the sung pitch and the resonance of vowels in their best relationship." In other words, shift the vowel formants to line-up (coincide) with a multiple of the pitch being sung. A singer can slightly make the vowel formants go up or down as the larynx is raised, and the various muscles in the mouth and face are altered.

"When the best resonance is heard and felt the singer will notice that less breath pressure is required."

Dr.Coffin did extensive research in order to provide the best vowel color match for a given pitch. I am not aware of anyone else in human history who has performed this extensive, far-reaching research.

▲ Probably few peoople know how he found the right vowel forms. He took a pitch generator, and held it in front of the singer's mouth, then the singer changed the vowel form until maximum resonance was felt and heard. In some of his books, Dr. Coffin explains how to do this, but the equipment mentioned is long gone, and no longer made. (I tried to imitate his experiments, but without success.)

▲ In order to use the exercises properly, you have to orient and use your paper "keyboard" so that the notes in the book make sense for your note range. I did that, but each person will have to take the time to get it "calibrated" properly. You have to "place the arrow" to match up. For low-voiced singers like me, I line-up the arrow on the "keyboard" so that note 23 equals high e-flat. I suspect most readers will not have the patience to get this right, but the exercises don't make any sense unless you do.

▲ Lots of illustrations--many of which will require significant study to properly appreciate. The concepts discussed here are not trivial! And all of them require you to figure out the note "numbers," depending on your vocal range. (Again, low-voiced singers have note #23 = high e-flat.)

▲ The author provides numerous exercises to assist the student to choose the right vowel color for your voice and pitch. He provides explanations for how to enunciate each vowel in the exercise. For example, on page 104, Dr. Coffin has an exercise entitled, "Sing Resonant Vowels on the Same Pitch." Then you slowly sing the pitches shown, changing the vowel as specified.

▲ Incredibly detailed, but difficult to follow. Honestly, I doubt that most students will be able to follow this without professional assistance. Recommend most students not try to do the exercises at first; instead, study the concepts that Dr. Coffin gives you in the earlier sections of this great work.

✔ All in all, an excellent book, which will take a LOT of study--and probably help from a professional vocal instructor. For those who get frustrated with this work, perhaps a better starting place would be found in the work of Shirlee Emmons, who also uses the same ideas, but presents in a simpler format.Recommend!

Craig Wright’s other plays include Recent Tragic Events, Molly’s Delicious, Mistakes Were Made, and The Unseen. His plays have been produced at theaters around the country, including Barrow Street Theatre, Woolly Mammoth, and Steppenwolf. His work as a television writer and producer includes Six Feet Under (for which he re­ceived an Emmy nomination), Lost, Brothers and Sisters, and Dirty Sexy Money. He is an ensemble member of A Red Orchid Theatre.

About the Author

Pablo Antonio Cuadra (1912–2002) is Nicaragua’s most prominent vanguardista, an author who defined his poetics in the 1920s and 1930s. His work was first translated into English by Thomas Merton. Cuadra was nominated by his country for the Nobel Prize for literature twice and received numerous literary honors, including the prestigious Gabriela Mistral Prize from the Organization of American States. In Nicaragua, he is revered as perhaps his country’s greatest poet since Rubén Darío.

Steven White is a professor of modern languages and literature at St. Lawrence University.

Greg Simon is an associate editor with Trask House Books and the Salt River Review. Both White and Simon are poets themselves and have translated several books, including translations of Federico García Lorca and Rubén Darío.
