About the Author
The late Berton Coffin's teachings and writings established him as an international authority on vocal pedagogy. Professor Emeritus, University of Colorado, Boulder, he also lived and taught in Europe from 1976 to 1983―in his private studio in Vienna; during summers with the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria; and in twenty-one opera houses in Austria, Denmark, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. He presented master classes in the United States and in Europe and served as a visiting professor of voice at U.S. universities. Dr. Coffin, baritone, held academic and professional music degrees from Columbia University, Eastman School of Music, Chicago Musical College, and Earlham College.

I studied personally with Dr. Coffin

Dr. Coffin took my broken voice (caused by incorrect teaching by former teachers), put it back together within my 2 years graduate study with him, and added an octave to my upper range. I enjoyed 30 years as a professional singer and am still singing well at age 65. My private voice students voices are developed quickly and remarkably using Dr. Coffin's exercises. I can't recommend this book enough. One must learn the International Phonetic Alphabet and apply it in the exercises and the book can be quite technical, but years of application in my voice as well as my students has me completely sold on it's merits. This book is for the serious voice student who is willing to work at his/her craft.

Great Technical Guide for Vocal Exercises

My voice teacher works with me out of this book, and she recommended that I buy it myself. I learned a great deal from all of the technical knowledge contained within its pages, though the reading can be a bit dry. At any rate, I think the book is worth its own weight in gold just for the exercises, which are specialized for either the male or female singer. I must agree with J.R. Knowles' review, though, in that it is best to have a teacher who can guide and listen to the singer through the exercises.
Also, ordering this book off of Amazon means a discounted price on top of not paying extra for Coffin's vowel register chart. The chart, normally $16 or $18 separately, comes with!
Please note that I am only a young vocalist and, of course, have limited experience. However, from my research, Berton Coffin is/was an acclaimed vocal pedagogue whose studies contributed much to the study of vocal production, and thus this book is recommended by professionals. The book certainly helps me in developing solid vocal technique and understanding the voice.

♫ Maximize Resonance, Minimize Effort!

The author of this complex work, Dr. Berton Coffin, was the President of NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing.) He is recognized and beloved by many for his excellent research and support of that organization.
▲ This book is one of the most complex, extensive, and under-utilized books in all of voice theory. My guess is that 98% of all voice students do not use this book, but it's their loss! I have studied and re-studied this book DOZENS OF TIMES and still have to study more! As I look it over again, may head is spinning! It's not that the book is wrong; rather that it's SO MUCH to digest!
▲ The theme is this: A singer can manipulate the muscles of the month and tongue, along with larynx height, so as to achieve the maximum possible resonance, for the smallest effort. Here's the key: "Bring the sung pitch and the resonance of vowels in their best relationship." In other words, shift the vowel formants to line-up (coincide) with a multiple of the pitch being sung. A singer can slightly make the vowel formants go up or down as the larynx is raised, and the various muscles in the mouth and face are altered.
"When the best resonance is heard and felt the singer will notice that less breath pressure is required."
Dr.Coffin did extensive research in order to provide the best vowel color match for a given pitch. I am not aware of anyone else in human history who has performed this extensive, far-reaching research.
▲ Probably few peoople know how he found the right vowel forms. He took a pitch generator, and held it in front of the singer's mouth, then the singer changed the vowel form until maximum resonance was felt and heard. In some of his books, Dr. Coffin explains how to do this, but the equipment mentioned is long gone, and no longer made. (I tried to imitate his experiments, but without success.)
▲ In order to use the exercises properly, you have to orient and use your paper "keyboard" so that the notes in the book make sense for your note range. I did that, but each person will have to take the time to get it "calibrated" properly. You have to "place the arrow" to match up. For low-voiced singers like me, I line-up the arrow on the "keyboard" so that note 23 equals high e-flat. I suspect most readers will not have the patience to get this right, but the exercises don't make any sense unless you do.
▲ Lots of illustrations--many of which will require significant study to properly appreciate. The concepts discussed here are not trivial! And all of them require you to figure out the note "numbers," depending on your vocal range. (Again, low-voiced singers have note #23 = high e-flat.)
▲ The author provides numerous exercises to assist the student to choose the right vowel color for your voice and pitch. He provides explanations for how to enunciate each vowel in the exercise. For example, on page 104, Dr. Coffin has an exercise entitled, "Sing Resonant Vowels on the Same Pitch." Then you slowly sing the pitches shown, changing the vowel as specified.
▲ Incredibly detailed, but difficult to follow. Honestly, I doubt that most students will be able to follow this without professional assistance. Recommend most students not try to do the exercises at first; instead, study the concepts that Dr. Coffin gives you in the earlier sections of this great work.
✔ All in all, an excellent book, which will take a LOT of study--and probably help from a professional vocal instructor. For those who get frustrated with this work, perhaps a better starting place would be found in the work of Shirlee Emmons, who also uses the same ideas, but presents in a simpler format.Recommend!
