In the late 1950s, Fisher helped revive the gothic horror film with The Curse of Fran kenstein and Dracula , both filmed at Hammer Studios, where Fisher maintained a long and productive career. This study aims to establish his critical reputation in the United States. Fisher struck fire with the Hammer films, which also boosted the careers of actors Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. Lengthy plot summaries accompany discussions of the production, work schedules, and narrative structures of each of his major works. Dixon applauds Fisher's output and recounts the frigid reception he received from his contemporaries. About the Author
Wheeler Winston Dixon is the James Ryan Professor of Film Studies, Coordinator of the Film Studies Program, Professor of English at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, and, with Gwendolyn Audrey Foster, editor of the new book series Quick Takes: Movies and Popular Culture for Rutgers University Press.

His recent books include Black & White Cinema: A Short History (2015); Streaming: Movies, Media and Instant Access (2013); Death of the Moguls: The End of Classical Hollywood (2012); 21st Century Hollywood: Movies in the Era of Transformation (2011, co-authored with Gwendolyn Audrey Foster); A History of Horror (2010); and Film Noir and the Cinema of Paranoia (2009).

Dixon's book A Short History of Film (2008, co-authored with Gwendolyn Audrey Foster) was reprinted six times through 2012. A second, revised edition was published in 2013; the book is a required text in universities throughout the world.

Terence Fisher,--what more can i say or comment on who to me is my all-time favorite director of film (thus,most notably the horror field) Terence Fisher not only gave birth to the modern horror film (The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), but his work enfluenced generations to come,(people who we know today, martin Scorseasee, Stevein speilberg ext,) with his masterful works of art. With supream reigning masterpeices such as his 3 best(my opinion) Frankenstein must be Destroyed (1969), wich is a technical masterpeice, not have i seen a film that clicks so well, in it's flawless compostion, and pacing, and story narritive, it's whole cynical veiw of the world,. This with out doubt is Fisher's most cynical piece. The Devil Rides out (1968), is another prime example as being fisher at his very best, exploring human realationships, and his facination for the romantism that he has brought to most his best and personal works. And finnaly The Horror of Dracula (1958), often considered Hammer's crown jewl of horror. This perfectly captures the essence of the stoker novel, and his take on victorian society is superaltive, and not to mention the execution in every scene and shot is absolultely flawless (possiably D.P. Jack Asher's best work). So if u have a great admiration for Terence fisher and his films this is the book to get, trust me, even if u know quit a bit, there is with out a doubt that u will indeed learn more about One of the greatest British-film directors who ever made their mark on the silver screen. "Long live the King!"-

Dixon's Book Pays Tribute to a Great Director

It's sad to think that there's only one book in English that deals with the life and work of Terence Fisher. Working within a limited form and exploitation industry, the best of Fisher's films transend craft. There is poetry in the economic way this director manipulates the conventions we take for granted in Horror Movies. Mr. Dixon's book takes Fisher's sense of craft and style seriously. He shows us that Fisher became one of the major artist working in the British film industry. Other well known directors became famous directing big budget projects. But what would a David Lean do if he had to work with the tight budgets, short shooting schedules, and often on the same sets from film to film the way Terence Fisher had to work? One of the most remarkable things about Fisher is that he took what others would consider limitations and created enduring works of art; visually stunning, compelling and poetic works of art. Dixon's book validates this fact. I learned a great deal from it and enjoyed the insider's view it communicates. Thank-you, Mr. Dixon.

This is a complete four-volume translation of the Chinese edition of Journey to the West in 100 chapters published in 1955 by the Beijing People's Literature Publishing House.

A well-known mythological novel based on folk tales, Journey to the West was probably put into its present form in the 1570s by Wu Cheng'en (1500-82)

Many different editions of the novel have appeared over the past 400 years. The Chinese edition of 1955 was based on the earliest known edition, the Shidetang woodblock edition printed in Nanjing in the 20th year of Wanli reign (1592) in the Ming Dynasty, and was further checked against six different editions from the Qing Dynasty.

The illustrations were selected from a lithographic edition (New Edition of Pictures for "Journey to the West") published in the 14th year (1888) of the Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty.

A "Translator's Afterword" will be found at the end of Volume 4.

About the Author
Mary Zimmerman is a professor of performance studies at Northwestern University. She has adapted-directed Metamorphoses, The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci, The Odyssey, The Arabian Nights, Eleven Rooms of Proust, and Journey to the West. Mostly recently she directed and wrote the libretto for Galileo Galilee, the new opera by Philip Glass, which premiered at the Goodman Theatre. In 1998, she was the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship, and in 2002, she won the Tony Award for Best Director. She has also been awarded the Sarah Siddons Society Great Women of American Theatre Award, the Northwestern Alumnae Award, the Chicago Drama League Award, and many others. Zimmerman is a Manilow Resident Director at the Goodman Theatre and an ensemble member of Chicago's Lookingglass Theatre Company.

This definitive three volume set of 'Journey To The West' by Wu Cheng'en is a must read for anyone interested in fantasy and Chinese mythology. 'Journey To The West' has everything from monkey mayhem to monsters, and magic. The quest for the sacred Buddhist sutras in India makes for an exciting journey filled with danger, demons and damsels. If you love classic Chinese literature or Buddhism, then you have to read 'Journey To The West'. I understand that in 2001, a TV movie entitled, 'The Monkey King' is scheduled for released. The following is a summary of the movie: "American journalist Nick Orton is caught up in the world of Chinese gods and monsters while on a search for the long lost manuscript to 'Hsi Yu Chi' (The Journey to the West) by Wu Ch'eng En. He is accompanied on his journey by a humanoid ape with incredible strength and magical powers, a humanoid pig-man, and his brother-in-arms, an ex-cannibal. Still a great book for children

This book is one of the Four Great Novels in China. Everybody in China know this story. Sun WuKong--the monkey, Zhu Bajie--the pig, everybody like them. Though it was written in 1570s, it is still a great book for children.

About the Author
Levendel moved from France to Israel in 1957 to study engineering, teach school, and live on a kibbutz. He married shortly after, and in 1974 he, his wife, and their children moved to the U.S. He is a computer scientist.

Robert O. Paxton is professor of history emeritus at Columbia University. A specialist in the history of western Europe in the era of the two world wars, he has written extensively on France under Nazi occupation, including VICHY FRANCE: OLD GUARD AND NEW ORDER (Columbia University Press, 2001) and VICHY FRANCE AND THE JEWS (Stanford University Press, 1995). His most recent work is THE ANATOMY OF FASCISM (Alfred Knopf, 2004).

Not the French alone...

Like so many other stories during WWII and the holocaust, this one is heartbreaking. It is hard to imagine those two innocent persons, a beautiful woman and her adorable little boy (as portrayed on the cover photos), being harassed and hunted down not because of any particular actions on their part, but just because "they are".

I am a fifty years old French woman married to an American man and now living in the USA since thirty years. My grandfather was not only a member of the French communist party (nothing like in Russia believe me!), but he also joined the French resistance with a few of his friends at the beginning of the war. All of them were caught early on and sent to varied places. None of them came back. My granddad was sent to the camp of Royaleu in Compiegne, a town above Paris and past the camp of Drancy. He was then sent to the concentration camp of Sachsenhausen next to Berlin, where he stayed for three years, and died of starvation and pneumonia at the liberation of the camp by the Russians. He was too weak to get better and make it home, so my grandma and mom never saw him again. My grandma continued some of his activities after he left, but alone with a little girl it became too scary and she stopped.

Nothing surprises me in Isaac Levendel's book, i already know all that. My grandma explained to me many times, that people, Jews, resistants, communists, homosexuals, gypsies and others, were mostly arrested by French men, called "la Milice". She knew all along who had denounced my grandfather and she recognized one of the men who arrested him. He was the husband of the woman cashier for the local movie theater where she would go with my mom sometimes.

The country was shared between the people who agreed with the Vichy government and the others. Among the ones who agreed were people who were just scared and wanted to survive the war without trouble, others were racist and could not wait to get rid of their Jewish neighbors, and some who were rather pathetic and small before the war, jumped at the chance to become "big and powerful", by giving their services to the Vichy government. Wars are always ugly and unfair no matter when or where they are. I have done a lot of research about the Holocaust and the occupation of France by the Germans, because of what happened to my grandfather. I have discovered that anti Semites were everywhere. There were Nazis in England and America as well. There were also Germans who were against Hitler and who risked or lost their lives for their beliefs.

An eye opener of a story

This is the story of Paxton's years of research into the death of his mother, who died at the hands of the Nazis. The book reads somewhat like a detective story. I won't give away the ending. I'll just add that the book is an eye opener about life in France under Nazi rule.

Very revealing about the French collaboration

This is a very beautiful and honest book about what happened to the Jews in France during WWII. It gives rare details about the French quiet acceptance of the deportation of Jews. It also reveals how difficult it is to get basic information from the French archives 50 years after the facts.
A must read for everybody who desires to know.

This narrative, originally published in 1970, is almost surreal in its intoxicating evocation of a woman and her male lover as one being. There is no plot, just sensation and many physical descriptions revealing the couple's interconnectedness, their feelings when they see and leave each other, their relationship with her parents, and the link between marriage and death. Mathematics, a lizard, and a mouse all play roles. There is considerable literary punning, with many historical and philosophical references and many allusions to the works of 19th-century German writer Heinrich von Kleist. The Third Body ($24.95; Aug.; 168 pp.; 0-8101-1687-1). This early (1970) concoction by the French feminist critic and (anti-?) novelist examines its narrator's relationship with her lovera relationship that in itself assumes in her busy mind its own identity. The resulting ``third body'' is composed of (and discomposed by) all she knows and fantasizes about herself, him, and them. The resulting meditation, though not without wit and even infrequent playfulness, is utterly devoid of narrative tension (though, to be fair, ``she'' does at one point swallow a fly). The luckless fourth body (the reader's) will probably not remain awake long enough to partake of any subsequent signs of life (there ain't many). -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. worth the battle

I have never had to fight so hard to get through a book, and it was worth every word. Intense image, amazing passion, harsh honesty. It was reading poetry as prose, becoming so engulfed with an image that it could take hours to move on to the next page. It was just amazing.

This amazing book is thick with literary allusions, verbal play and passionate response to being human, to being in love. That might make it sound dense and too difficult but Cixous' love of language and love of playing with language, clever insights and sincere voice along with her sensous responses, makes this book a rewarding experience. It will not be a book you read quickly but it is also not one you will forget quickly.

Will and Lily Dale Kidder try to hold onto their beliefs about their son's life and death and the possibilities for their own lives, but both are dealt a shattering blow by the young man of the title, a friend of their son's who never appears in the play. Foote's pitch-perfect characters and sensitive eye for interpersonal relationships continue to place him at the top of playwrights working today. About the Author
Horton Foote has written and adapted dozens of plays and screenplays, including "The Trip to Bountiful, The Young Man from Atlanta, Tender Mercies, " and "To Kill a Mockingbird." Foote has won Academy and Writers Guild awards, as well as the Pulitzer Prize. In 1996 he was elected to the Theatre Hall of Fame, and in 1998, to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He also received the Academy's Gold Medal for Drama for his life's work.

John Guare is the author of numerous plays, including "Lydie Breeze" and "Six Degrees of Separation," His film work includes the Oscar-nominated "Atlantic City," which won New York, Los Angeles, and National Film Critics Circle Awards for best screenplay.

Horton Foote is absolutely one of America's greatest writers. And, these three plays are fine examples of his writing talent. And, if you haven't seen the film adaptation of his story, "The Trip to Bountiful," starring Geraldine Page (who took home the Oscar), you have to get a copy. It's one of my favorite films of all time.
