In June 1862 Fyodor Dostoevsky left Petersburg on his first excursion to Western Europe. Ostensibly making the trip to consult Western specialists about his epilepsy, Dostoevsky also wished to see firsthand the source of the Western ideas he believed were corrupting Russia. Over the course of his journey he visited a number of major cities, including Berlin, Paris, London, Florence, Milan, and Vienna. He recorded his impressions of everything he saw, and published them as "Winter Notes on Summer Impressions" in the February 1863 issue of Vremya (Time), the periodical he edited.

About the Author
Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky (Russian: Фёдор Миха́йлович Достое́вский; IPA: [ˈfʲodər mʲɪˈxajləvʲɪtɕ dəstɐˈjefskʲɪj]  ; 11 November 1821 – 9 February 1881 ) sometimes spelled Dostoevsky, was a Russian writer of novels, short stories and essays. Dostoyevsky's literary works explore human psychology in the troubled political, social and spiritual context of 19th-century Russian society. Although Dostoyevsky began writing books in the mid-1850s, his best remembered work was done in his last years, including Crime and Punishment, The Idiot and The Brothers Karamazov. He wrote eleven novels, three novellas, seventeen short novels and three essays and is often acknowledged by critics as one of the greatest and most prominent psychologists in world literature. Fyodor Dostoyevsky was born and raised within the grounds of the Mariinsky hospital in Moscow, in Russia.

Surprisingly funny, and relevant!

Granted, nineteenth-century Russia was almost a different planet from modern America. But what do you think of these comments about the Frenchified Russians Dostoevsky disliked?

"It may be that reality around us looks none too lovely even yet; but then we are so wonderful ourselves, so civilized, so European that the common people feel sick at the very sight of us. We have now reached the point where the common people regard us as complete foreigners, and do not understand a single word of ours --- and this certainly is progress, whatever you say. We have now reached a point where our contempt for the common people and the basic principles of their being is so profound that even our attitude to them is stamped with a new, unprecedented and kind of supercilious disdain...and this is progress, whatever you say.

"And then how self-confident we now are in our civilizing mission, with what an air of superiority we solve all problems, and what problems! There is no soil, we say, and no people, nationality is nothing but a certain system of taxation, the soul is a tabula rasa, a small piece of wax out of which you can readily mould a real man or a homunculus --- all that must be done is to apply the fruits of European civilization and read two or three books. And then how serene, how majestically serene we are, because we have solved all problems and written them off."

For some strange reason, this passage made me think of the current situation in the United States.

Maybe we need to craft our own solutions to our problems, and not rely on the Wisdom of the French!

"Whatever you say," this is a very interesting book, in which Dostoevsky sometimes sounds just like H. L. Mencken.

By the way, Joseph Frank, who wrote the book on Dostoevsky, thinks that "Winter Notes on Summer Impressions" is, in an important way, a preliminary draft of that strange masterpiece, Notes from the Underground.

Highly recommended for a cold winter night!

Gripping portrait.

Vivid impressions of the author during his travel all over Europe in the second half of the 19th century. His main targets are France (Paris) and England (London).
He gives us a biting and cynical portrait of the French: parvenus and bourgeois who make a mockery of 'liberté, égalité, fraternité'.
In England, he is confronted with child prostitution in London's Haymarket: a most terrible and moving scene of a child of only six, black and blue beaten, barefoot, who tries to lure him to have sex with her. On the contrary, the Anglican clerics preach a religion for the wealthy and don't even hide it. A most pregnant portrait of the fat and the meagre.
A book to recommend.

Capitalism critcism

In this book Dostoevsky seems to take his time to criticize capitalism ( or so I find), takes as an example French society,
criticizes the accumulation of money and the adulation of god money (Baal), the servilism that comes with it, analyzes the way marital relations are, that is in relation with capitalism (Bribri and Ma biche ).
I found it pretty good, although it requires you to have knowledge of many things of the time it was written, (for instance can you remember who is Guizot?) and be used to the style of Dostoevsky.

Caldwell's book reads like a novel

Unlike most books written on the subject, Ms. Caldwell's book reads like a novel. Sadly, it is non-fiction and an all too often story of wrongful incarceration. It is a page turner and an emotional roller coaster. Congratulations to the defense team, and Godspeed Mr. Mosley.

The other side of Broadway

I have been enjoying Broadway shows for almost 50 years. I have seen a lots of hits and my share of flops. As I often buy tickets before a show opens I have had a few experiences where I held tickets for shows that never made it into New York or closed before I could see it. I am delighted to have a resource where I can find out more about the shows I never got to see like the musical Breakfast at Tiffany's or the shows I did see on the road that never made it to Broadway, Gone With The Wind among others. Any long term Broadway buff will love this book. I just wish it had some pictures.

He has published In Search of a Song, a concordance of the United Church of Christ hymnal; Methodist Hymnal Concordance (Scarecrow 1987); and A Concordance of the Hymnal 1982 (Scarecrow 1989)

Lloyd Wendt was a long-time Chicago journalist and the author of Chicago Tribune: The Rise of a Great American Newspaper (Rand McNally, 1979), and (with Herman Kogan) Give the Lady What She Wants: The Story of Marshall Field & Company (And Books, 1979).

Herman Kogan (1914-1989) spent fifty years covering Chicago, many with the Chicago Sun-Times. He is the author of Yesterday's Chicago (E.A. Seemann, 1976) and (with Lloyd Wendt) Give the Lady What She Wants: The Story of Marshall Field & Company (And Books, 1979).

Big Bill Cannot Be Bought, Bossed or Bluffed!

This is the most popular and widely read of the biographies of Chicago last Republican mayor. William Hale Thompson, Jr., was truly sui generis.

Despite being born to a wealth family, Thompson charted an unusual career path by dropping out of high school and working as a grocery clerk, a railway brakeman, and a cook on a cattle drive before fulfilling his ambition of being a cowboy and rancher. Apart from attending a business college classes, his education was effectively over at the age of fourteen. This patrician was more than happy to desert his upper class origins to shoot pool and buy votes with complimentary rounds of top shelf whiskey.

Nevertheless, Thompson became famous throughout Chicago as a star amateur athlete and a superb yachtsman. He achieved fame as a star football player for the Chicago Athletic Association and won the Chicago to Mackinac race across Lake Michigan three times. During his downtime, he managed to serve a term as a Chicago alderman and a term as a County Commissioner. In 1915, he surprised everyone, but his political handlers by being elected mayor. He was elected to a total of three terms. When he lost the mayoralty election in 1931, he had equalled the record of Carter Harrison II for longevity in the mayor's office (this mark was subsequently surpassed by three subsequent Democratic mayors).

This book attempts to provide an adequate biographical account of one of the most condemned, controversial, mercurial and inexplicably popular public figures in Illinois history. Love him or hate him, you cannot ignore Big Bill Thompson. The biographers succeed in their task for the most part, but the book is not free of omissions. It works as a simple composite and that may be good enough for the casual reader.

One wishes that Preston Sturges had filmed "Big Bill of Chicago." We will have to settle for "The Great McGinty." Too bad that movie is not set in the Roaring Twenties!

Azerbaijan is a divided land; its cultural boundaries stretch beyond the geopolitical ones so that a large portion of what was once Azerbaijan is currently part of Iran, and more Azerbaijanis live within Iran (in Iranian Azerbaijan) than in the independent Republic of Azerbaijan.
The contemporary history of Azerbaijan has been a complicated story. There is an on-going conflict with neighboring Armenia which has shaped not only foreign policy and relations, but the domestic politics of the nation. Those politics have been further complicated by Western interest in Azerbaijani off-shore oil deposits.
Given its history, Azerbaijan is certainly not the easiest country to describe. This historical dictionary does an excellent job despite the difficulties. It provides entries on persons, institutions and events, with some emphasis on recent periods, but with a view of the earliest history. There are other entries on the important aspects of the economy, society, religion and culture. Also useful are an introduction for context, and a helpful chronology.
