This book attempts to assemble "all relevant and useful information pertaining to the American art song repertoire, and also documents the men and women who produced it." The author, a retired singer with an impressive musical career, has created a practical handbook for singers, teachers, scholars, accompanists, and coaches that lists, alphabetically by composer, a large number of art songs, some well known, others obscure. Included are 146 American composers dating roughly from 1870 to 1980. The longest entries are for Charles Ives and Ned Rorem. Songs chosen have a history of performance, warrant performance in Villamil's estimation, or are too visible to be ignored. All are published songs for solo voice sung either unaccompanied or with piano accompaniment. Popular and folk songs and those intended for religious services are not included.

Each composer is discussed in a biography that covers his or her origins, musical education, and career. The composer's output is described, with publication and recording information noted. Song annotations give abundant information so singers can evaluate them for their purposes. The expected information of title, poet, date, commissions, first performance, type and range of voice, and tempo is amplified by a description that characterizes the song ("A hushed, unadorned, lovely miniature") and mentions possible problems or caveats ("Uneven and a bit rambling"; "unusual and interesting, but could be tedious without a first-rate interpreter").

Appendixes include a supplement of songs that did not merit a full entry; a list of American art-song anthologies and the contents of each; and a directory of publishers. A bibliography, discography, index to song titles, and index to poets whose texts are used as lyrics complete the work.

This scholarly work belongs in academic and music libraries and in others with appropriately musically inclined patrons.

Herman Melville wrote White-Jacket; or, The World in a Man-of-War during two months of intense work in the summer of 1849. The reviewers were not as hard on White-Jacket as Melville himself was. The English liked its praise of British seamen. The Americans were more interested in Melville's attack on naval abuses, particularly flogging, and his advocacy of humanitarian causes. Soon Melville was acclaimed the best sea writer of the day.

Part autobiography, part epic fiction, White-Jacket remains a brilliantly imaginative social novel by one of the great writers of the sea. This text of the novel is an Approved Text of the Center for Editions of American Authors (Modern Language Association of America).

This book had the same effect on me as Moby ...

This book had the same effect on me as Moby Dick. I felt I would be able to perform any job aboard one of those frigates or whaleships. His descriptions are complete, and the detail is sufficient to create the belief in the reader that one, too, could perform any of the tasks assigned to any of the crewmen or officers.

Life Within A Total Institution

I read this book after reading Erving Goffman's "Asylums". In that book, Goffman, a sociologist, discusses the rise of "Total Institutions", i.e. institutions that totally control the lives of those within. Melville's "White Jacket" is a book that Goffman often referred to in order to illustrate different aspects of life within the total institution.
The introductory essay to this book discusses White Jacket in relationship to the growing bro-ha-ha over slavery, but I thought the book was much more interesting then that.
What was most suprising to me, having never read Melville before, was how funny some of the chapters were. Episodes involving Surgeon Cuticle amputating the leg of an unwilling seaman recall the funniest moments of television shows like Monty Python or the Simpsons.
Melville's accurate portrayal of life within the "T.I.", reminded me of Ken Kesey's "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". There, the setting is an insane asylum, here it is a Man O' Wear, but both books deal with the tactics and strategies an individual might employ when faced with an oppressive living environment.
Although I am not sure when, or if, I might try to tackle author's masterpiece 'Moby Dick', I did come away from this book with a profound respect for Melville's capabilities as a writer. I will no longer take for granted his status among the pantheon of American writers.

Second to one

This book is second only to Moby-Dick in the list of Melville's greatest works. And Melville's greatest works are America's greatest works.

White-Jacket has it all; humor, pathos, poetry and philosophy. This book makes me not only admire Melville the author but love Melville the man.

To suggest that the book would be better off without its "sermons" against cruelty in the Man-of-War's world is to suggest that Melville should have written some other book. He didn't write that book, he wrote this one and this is the one he wanted us to read. God bless him.
