Materada, originally published in Italian in 1940, is a moving and personal story of pre^-World War II farm life on the Istrian peninsula. Damaged by war and the initial divvying of the country between America, Britain, and Yugoslavia, and then the final dividing between Italy and Yugoslavia, Istria has seen many intruders in the last century, both welcome and unwelcome. The two main ethnic groups, Italians and Slovenes, have had tense relations, and the quiet rural farms have been witness to political violence. Tomizza's protagonist, Francesco Koslovic (the name itself is a blending of the two cultures), has his own personal battle. The uncle he has worked for all his life refuses to give Francesco any rights to the family farmland. With no land of his own, he must choose between staying in Materada or building a better life in Italy. Loyalty, trust, and cultural unity have fallen away with all the dividing and passing of land. a lyrical gem

It's the lyricism of the writing that first got me. On page two, I was already in the world the main character resides and remained captivated all the way through the novel. The first-person narrator is not depicted as any extraordinary person, but simply as a diligent individual who longs for his own land like many other farmers. It's admirable that the author projects complex historical, political landscapes of the region through the eyes of peasant farmers, realistic, literary "down-to-earth" characters. The book doesn't over-sentimentalize or preach. Yet it helped me better understand the complicated regional tension/balance that history and politics have brought to Istria. Just a final note: Read the translator's foreword after you read the story. The foreword is very informative but somewhat dense, and you might feel a little taken aback from the story you are about to begin if you read it first.

A simple story about a complex issue

Interested in Istria I bought "Materada", which is the name of a community near Umago in what is now Croatia. The story is narrated in a simple way by his main character, a farmer deceived by his uncle.

The story of Francesco and his uncle is interesting as a family drama. However, the book also deals with the complex history of Istria, which used to be part of Italy and then ceded to Jugoslavia after WWII, creating one of the biggest exodus ever known in European history.

I had a basic understanding of this part of history, but this wasn't enough. Francesco's narration is that of an insider, of course, but it made me feel like an outsider, specially during the first half. During the second half of the story, it focuses more on Francesco and what it meant to consider leaving your homeland, finishing with a beautilful chapter with the inhabitants of Materada attending a mass improvised by themselves.

The book left me wanting to read more about this part of the world, although it wasn't as satisfactory as I thought it would be be ause of my lack of depth in the matter.

About the Author
Eric Bentley was born in England in 1916 and became an American citizen in 1948. He has earned a reputation as a scholar, teacher, professional theatre critic, performer, and a playwright.  Recently, Bentley was honored with the 2006 Village Voice OBIE Awards Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2006 International Association of Theatre Critics Thalia Prize. He is the author of many major texts on drama including The Playwright as Thinker (Harvest, 1987), The Life of the Drama (Applause, 2000), and Thinking about the Playwright (Northwestern, 1987). He is also the author of several collections of plays including Rallying Cries (1987), The Kleist Variations (2005), and Monstrous Martyrdoms (2007), as well as the translator of Pirandello’s Plays (1998) and the author of  The Pirandello Commentaries (1986), all available from Northwestern University Press.

A brilliant reliable resource for the study of Brecht's theory and practice, essentially a primary source for research. Bentley was a personal friend of Brecht during his stay in the US and can analyze his theories probably better than anyone else.

Some of the topics Fusso considers are Dostoevsky's search for an appropriate artistic language for sexuality, a young narrator's experimentation with homoerotic desire and unconventional narrative in A Raw Youth; and Dostoevsky's approach to a young man's sexual development in A Raw Youth and The Brothers Karamazov. She also explores his complex treatment of a child's secret sexuality in his account of the Kroneberg child abuse case in A Writer's Diary; and his conception of the ideal family, a type of family that appears in his works mainly by negative example. Focusing mainly on sexual practices considered "deviant" in Dostoevsky's time--both because these are the practices that his young characters confront and because they offer the most intriguing interpretive problems--Fusso decodes the author's texts and their social contexts. In doing so, she highlights one thread in the intricate thematic weave of Dostoevsky's novels and newly illuminates his artistic process.

Susanne Fusso is a professor in the Department of Russian Language and Literature at Wesleyan University. She is the author of Designing Dead Souls: An Anatomy of Disorder in Gogol (Stanford, 1993). She is the translator and editor of A Russian Prince in the Soviet State: Hunting Stories, Letters from Exile, and Military Memoirs (2005) and coeditor of Essays on Karolina Pavlova (2001) and Essays on Gogol: Logos and the Russian Word (1994), all published by Northwestern University Press.
