Completed in 1930 but unpublished during his lifetime, Platonov's masterpiece, a scathing satire of the Soviet attempt to build a workers' utopia, gauges the vast human tragedy of Stalinism, portraying a society organized and regimented around a monstrous lie, and thus bereft of meaning, hope, integrity, humanity. The novel's central image is the digging of an immense foundation pit for a communal high-rise project to house the local proletariat, a project that remains a big hole. The story is also eerily prescient: as Chandler notes in his valuable introduction, it foreshadows the doomed Palace of Soviets, which was begun in Moscow in 1932 but never built after years of excavation. Loaded with irony and images of the walking dead, and spiked with mordant digs at Soviet conformity and bureaucracy, Platonov's somnambulistic nightmare is filled with characters cut off from normal human feelings and reality as they convince themselves that party slogans, precepts and careerist hustling are meaningful keys to the future. Platonov (1899-1951), himself a disillusioned revolutionary who fought in the Red Army during Russia's civil war, was also a deep lyric prose-poet of everyday life and nature, as revealed in this beautiful translation. His dark parable is a great dirge for Mother Russia as well as a savage analysis of the split consciousness fostered by an oppressive system. Platonov's books are still being unearthed in Russia decades after his death. The first English translations of The Foundation Pit came out in the 1980s, but has since been found to be incomplete.

Andrey Platonov--the revolutionary prose of a master

Andrey Platonov is a strange Soviet writer who belonged to no literary school and wrote books and stories, some unpublished during his lifetime, that are unclassifiable and unlike anything else I have ever read. The Foundation Pit is perhaps his masterpiece and deals with very real and very terrible things in the Soviet Union of the late 1920s-1930s, including collectivization and the "elimination of the kulaks (`rich peasants') as a class." The title alludes to the digging of the foundation for a building that will serve as a gigantic Proletarian Home--although by the end the pit has served only as a grave. But what is really striking about this novel is the language in which it is written--a language which sometimes seems to be wrestled up from deep within the narrator or the main characters, especially Voshchev, whom we encounter on the first page:
"On the day of the thirtieth anniversary of his private life, Voshchev was made redundant from the small machine factory where he obtained the means for his own existence."
Add to this the mashing-up (humorous and/or horrific) of Soviet clichés, and yet other strangenesses of style and device: it's as dense as poetry.
Platonov deserves to be better known, and this edition will help. The Chandlers and Meerson have provided an afterword and notes to help orient the reader and tease out the allusions (from Biblical and liturgical subtexts to Soviet speak). And the translation itself has to be one of the most daring attempts to convey an almost intractable text from one language into another.
NYRB has also published Platonov's Soul: And Other Stories--and these are now the editions of choice. Highly recommended.

The Beckett of Communist Russia

Platonov writes with a minimalist style in a stark Russian landscape in the midst of the absolute absurdity of a mindless Communist bureaucracy killing its people to dig a vast foundation pit in the middle of nowhere. The net effect, like the writing of Samuel Beckett, is vulnerable characters searching without hope for meaning, which is absent or unfathomable or beyond their reach. This novel is a moving foray into the theatre of the absurd as the characters deal with the heartbreak and death and the utter absence of opportunity of their everyday lives as peasants. They are merely worked to death by a dehumanizing government machine intent upon killing them with meaningless labor and driven by petty party leaders who demand loyalty despite the overwhelming poverty they perpetuate. The hero, Voschev, is a thinking man who could easily play the role of Vladimir or Estragon in Beckett's Waiting for Godot. "It seems to me all the time that there is something special in the distance, or some splendid unattainable object, and I live in sadness." He lives like the stranger of Camus, without hope, and yet he navigates as best he can. Voschev becomes a collector of rags, the lost remnants of dead souls. "All the poor and middle peasants worked with such zest of life as though they wanted to find salvation for themselves forever in the abyss of the foundation pit." Platonov is a man who knows well the abyss having spent a lifetime futilely trying to publish under a repressive Marxist regime. His heroic efforts to earning his living as a writer, despite censorship and cruel repression, are an inspiration to unread writers of serious literature who suffer the same fate of anonymity as a result of the rampant commercialism of American publishing. Our national culture is diminished because serious writers refusing to pander to the dictates of writing for commercial profit go unread. Those who embrace commercial writing produce work astonishing in its vast, vapid mediocrity. We'll look back on our vast catalogues of best sellers and be compelled to ask ourselves, "As a great nation, was this really the best that we could do for our national literature?" This novel takes its readers to the abyss of the foundation pit and yet somehow, decades after his death, Platonov finds that he has managed to climb out of the pit by virtue of the staunch and dogged and staggering will to write serious literaure, which his own generation suffered never to read. As millions inside and outside Russia have discovered, Platonov is a real writer: he is a writer's writer. I urge you to discover him, too.

Best Civics Quote Book Ever

I bought every copy of this book that I could find, to give to my graduating seniors. I have had two copies in my classroom for years, because the book is so useful. The layout is the key. Each area of interest--Communism, Liberty, Justice, etc.--is set up so that quotations related to it are in chronological order. Thus, the reader can see not only what was said and by whom, but also changes over time. Pro and con statements are presented, as well as those that define the term under discussion. In one class, we simply started with a quotation on strength and justice, from Pascal, and moved from the terms and ideas students used in their analysis of it, back to the book to search out the quotations that also used those terms. Great thinkers such as Montaigne and Voltaire entered the discussion, almost as if they were in the room! The power of ideas, both from the students and these older voices, raised the analytical thinking to new heights.
