Serge Chaloff (1923-1957) is most widely remembered as the flamboyant baritone saxophone star with Woody Herman's 2nd Herd whose problems with drugs extended to erratic personal behavior. Nevertheless, there were many brilliant sessions featuring his work before and after his stint with Herman. This work attempts to bring them the recognition they deserve.
Simosko details the life and music of Serge Chaloff in an engaging style, from his childhood in Boston, Massachusetts, through his untimely death in 1957. He also provides a discography of Chaloff's recorded output, much of which has been made available by the 1993 Mosaic Records release of The Complete Serge Chaloff Sessions.

Review
Musically, it is hard to consider a young saxophonist 'serious' if they haven't heard the Chaloff recordings, especially if he or she is a baritone sax player. The live performances documented throughout this book provide further insights about how much in demand Chaloff was, particularly after he left Herman in 1949. But since almost half of this book is a very detailed and thorough discography, it really affirms just how prolific Chaloff was. For these reasons, the book is important for many readers. (Jazz Educators Journal)
The author has done a good job of balancing the musical legacy with the personal story, placing the accent on the former. (The IAJRC Journal)
...highly recommended for all jazz collections and most academic and special music libraries. (American Reference Books Annual)

Author's comments
By Vladimir Simosko
Although this book was widely reviewed, I did not see any review in which the essential drama of Chaloff's life was reflected. Of course, the focus of the book is on his music and legacy but while his importance as a premier jazz baritone saxophonist seems beyond question, the Chaloff story also involves fascinating and ultimately inspiring swings of lifestyle: youthful enthusiasm and breathtaking development as a musician; a phase as "out-of-control junkie" eventually transcended and followed by impressive artistic rebirth; then his tragic illness and early death as he heroically continued playing at his peak to the end. Potential readers might like to know this dramatic story is in there along with the documentation of his musical legacy and career.

Outstanding bio and discography on a very under appreciated jazz artist
By BluesFan
Serge Chaloff was one of the few baritone saxophone players worth noting. He started out in some of the big swing bands (Jimmy Dorsey, Count Basie), and first became well-known as one of the "Four Brothers" reed section in Woody Herman's Second Herd. Originally influenced by Harry Carney (Duke Ellington) and later captivated by Charlie Parker, Chaloff became the first major bebop baritone sax player, who played with Bud Powell for awhile, and led some of his own groups. His career suffered from his heroin addiction, which he only kicked several years before he died of cancer of the spine in 1957 at the age of 33. Despite his problems, he was an outstanding and very under appreciated saxophone artist, leaving an excellent body of work behind him. The fact that he got his own box set on Mosaic Records ("The Complete Serge Chaloff Sessions") speaks volumes about his importance as a jazz artist.
Vladimir Simosko's "Serge Chaloff: A Musical Biography and Discography" is by default the best book on Chaloff because it is the only one. Having said that, Simosko is a well regarded jazz scholar, teacher, player, and previously the curator of the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University, with books about Eric Dolphy and Artie Shaw to his credit as well.
I have a large library of jazz books and discographies. Using those as a basis of comparison, I'd say that this is a first-class biography and discography. I found it well-written and enjoyable to read. It has also proven an invaluable resource in chasing down some of Chaloff's more obscure recordings and for its factual accuracy on all of his recordings.
If you are a Serge Chaloff fan, you have to have this book. If you enjoy reading about jazz artists of the 1940s and 1950s, you will enjoy it and be pleased to add it to your library.
Recommended without any reservations at all.
