Over a period of fifty years, sisters Claribel and Etta Cone amassed one of the most acclaimed collections of late-nineteenth and twentieth-century art in America. Dr. Claribel and Miss Etta were two halves of an idiosyncratic team—Claribel bold and assertive and Etta reflective and sensitive—who used the fortunes of their German Jewish immigrant family to seek out works that inspired and pleased them, regardless of public opinion and with only self-taught expertise.
This richly illustrated biography documents their lives from a unique perspective: that of their great-niece, who wrote this book with her daughter. Ellen B. Hirschland and Nancy Hirschland Ramage delve into Claribel’s and Etta’s world, following the sisters through letters and personal stories as they travel to meet some of the artists whose works would turn their adjoining apartments into a gallery. They bought art by Manet, Gauguin, and Cézanne, as well as of Picasso and Matisse, whom they came to know well. The sisters’ experiences in Paris from 1901 through the 1920s provide an exceptional view of the bright artistic ferment in the city at that time. They were two Victorian women from Baltimore buying avant-garde masterpieces, attending salons with friends Gertrude and Leo Stein, and building a collection that would initially enrage the conservative people around them. Only with time would their keen eyes and unwavering taste prove them right.

Prescient spinsters
By Reich Claude
This is a beautiful book that vividly recounts the story of two Baltimore sisters who never got married and who, in the early XXth century, became two of the foremost modern art collectors in the United States. Following a chronological pattern, it is full of previously unpublished photographs (the authors are the great-niece and great-great-niece of the Cone sisters)and marvelous illustrations of the paintings acquired by Claribel and Etta Cone, paintings which today form the core of the Baltimore Museum of Art collection. The text is lively and replete with anecdotes that give a good idea of the artworld in Paris (Picasso, Matisse,Gertrude Stein, the art dealers, etc) and of the society of a medium-size industrial city in the United States during the first three decades of the XXth century.

fascinating history of famous art collectors
By Ivor E. Zetler
This book relates the fascinating story of the Cone sisters and their famous art collection. Written by family members, there is plenty to interest the reader. I particularly enjoyed learning about Claribel and Etta's personalities plus their association with Gertrude Stein and Matisse. The book is well illustrated with photographs of the sisters and their apartment in Baltimore as well as generously sized reproductions of some of the major art works in their collection. My only complaint is that the writing, informative as it may be, lacks style and flair. I still commend this book for those interested in the subjects of art history and collectors.

Unbelievable true story of 2 sisters in the 20th century art world
By G. Heath
I found out about this pair of sisters on an unplanned visit to a museum a few years ago where they exhibited the art collection of the Cone Sisters, who not only collected the works of then-budding masters of modern art of the early 20th century, but also had personal relationships with the artists themselves. This is an amazing and interesting story that should soon become a major motion picture.
