Will the future be one of economic expansion, greater tolerance, liberating inventions, and longer, happier lives? Or do we face economic stagnation, declining quality of life, and a technologically enhanced totalitarianism worse than any yet seen? The Fabulous Future? America and the World in 2040 draws its inspiration from a more optimistic time, and tome, The Fabulous Future: America in 1980, in which Fortune magazine celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary by publishing the predictions of thought leaders of its time.

In the present volume, the world’s leading specialists from diverse fields project developments in their areas of expertise, from religion and the media to the environment and nanotechnology. Will we be happier, and what exactly does happiness have to do with our economic future? Where is higher education heading and how should it develop? And what is the future of prediction itself? These exciting essays provoke sharper questions, reflect unexpectedly on one another, and testify to our present anxieties about the surprising world to come.

Recipient of 2007 The Hyde Park Historical Society Paul Cornell Award

A collection of interviews with African Americans who came to Chicago from the South.

In their first great migration to Chicago that began during World War I, African Americans came from the South seeking a better life--and fleeing a Jim Crow system of racial prejudice, discrimination, and segregation. What they found was much less than what they'd hoped for, but it was much better than what they'd come from--and in the process they set in motion vast changes not only in Chicago but also in the whole fabric of American society. This book, the first of three volumes, revisits this momentous chapter in American history with those who lived it.

Oral history of the first order, Bridges of Memory lets us hear the voices of those who left social, political, and economic oppression for political freedom and opportunity such as they'd never known--and for new forms of prejudice and segregation. These children and grandchildren of ex-slaves found work in the stockyards and steel mills of Chicago, settled and started small businesses in the "Black Belt" on the South Side, and brought forth the jazz, blues, and gospel music that the city is now known for. Historian Timuel D. Black, Jr., himself the son of first-generation migrants to Chicago, interviews a wide cross-section of African Americans whose remarks and reflections touch on issues ranging from fascism to Jim Crow segregation to the origin of the blues. Their recollections comprise a vivid record of a neighborhood, a city, a society, and a people undergoing dramatic and unprecedented changes.

From Publishers Weekly
A two-hour interview may only scrape the surface of a life, but Black's 36 oral histories exceed the sum of their parts. Black, a jazz historian and professor, frankly selects subjects whom he personally knows-and most people Black knows turn out to be fascinating. Many of the biographies of these political leaders, activists, artists and educators turn on how their considerable gifts were made manifest in the "promised land" of Chicago in the early 20th century. Among all the leitmotifs-a dissertation could be written on the repetition of the words "money," "education" and "hustle"-the conflict between national identity and racial identity emerges as one of the most profound. On the day WWI ends, nine-year-old Robert Colin makes a small fortune selling American flags, enough to finance his family's move to Chicago. They arrive just as a race riot explodes. "That riot took all the religion out of me and all the patriotism as well because of what they did to blacks," he says. Corneal Davis, who will go on to become an Illinois state representative, gets his first job in Chicago by putting down "American" as his race. "But ain't it a shame," he says, "that after I've been soldiering and risking my life for this country, now I can't put down 'colored' and even get myself any kind of a job in a city like this?" In these moments, oral history offers the richness of novels with the punch of nonfiction, and even the casual reader, who may not appreciate Black's scrupulous attention to dates or his sentimental reminiscing with his subjects, will delight in this invaluable resource.

From Booklist
This is a collection of interviews with black Chicagoans affected by the great migration of southern blacks to the North during World War II. While many of these interviewees--bankers, lawyers, doctors, entertainers, and politicians--reveal substantial success stories, they also reflect on the adversities they faced and the evolution of their strategies to overcome and, in fact, endure the prejudice and hardships they found in Chicago. Black interviews more than 150 people who left their mark on Chicago, providing personal accounts of the broader sociological studies that have profiled black Chicago. This oral history, done in a question-and-answer format, captures memories of the children of the great migration, many now grandparents and great-grandparents. Without this work, many of these stories would otherwise be lost to a throwaway generation with little historical perspective. Black has captured the voices of the near past, and they tell a story as contemporary as our own: that success only comes with struggle, that progress is possible only when our history is both reflected and recognized in our contemporary lives. Review
"Black has produced compelling oral history certain to stand alongside classics on black Chicago that start with St. Clair Drake and Horace Clayton's Black Metropolis."
--Library Journal

"[E]ven the casual reader. . .will delight in this invaluable resource."--Publishers Weekly

"These interviews provide a lens into the choices, disappointments, work, family, cultural community and race relations that shaped the lives of Black Chicagoans during the age of the Great Migration. The history of Chicago has been made richer and more accessible by Black's work." --Lonnie Bunch, president of the Chicago Historical Society

Eavesdrop on intimate conversations among old friends
By AfroAmericanHeritage
What a gift this collection is!

In 1988, Timuel Black began to record and preserve the recollections of people who had lived in Chicago a long time, particularly the first generation of the Great Migration. When he wrote the introduction to this book, he had recorded over 125 conversations and still had "many , many more people with whom I would like to speak." Thirty-six of those conversations are presented here, with two more volumes planned to follow.

The interviews are conducted using the "participant observer" technique, and since Dr. Black - a long time resident himself - is an "insider" these interviews are essentially honest, intimate conversations among old friends, many of whom have now passed. As Dr. Black makes clear, this book is not intended to be a history of Black Chicago and its institutions, but rather a collection of oral memories from people who participated in shaping those institutions. But his field work provides invaluable data for future researchers attempting to compile that history.

If this book contained nothing more than the biographical information about each of the 40 participants (some are joint interviews), it would make fascinating reading. But the interviews bring each vividly to life. We meet people from all walks, including civil servants, educators, politicians, jazz musicians, railroad workers, business people, even two generations of South Side Chicago represented by mother and daughter Mildred Bowden and Hermene Hartman. Some, like George Johnson, tell a story of "from rags to riches." Others fall into a category of "just keep on keepin' on."

But all are riveting. I look forward to the next two volumes!

an oral history of Bronzeville
By declension
The strength of this book is in its informality. Mr. Black is friends with nearly all of his interviewees (he has known several of them for over 40 years), and the sessions read as a conversation rather than an interview. This book is especially useful for one looking for supplimental material about the neighborhood of Bronzeville in Chicago, segregation (from an individual perspective rather than scholarly leaning), and smaller aspects of city history and social change that are often forgotten. Some of his interviewees include a man that owned a company that distributed hair straightener around the U.S., a man that started what would become the Illinois state lottery, well respected teachers, and military servicemen.

There is a great deal of repetition that could have been eliminated regarding DuSable High School, locations of buildings, boundaries of the neighborhood, and references to people that are not elaborated upon; it is possible that Black chose not to edit this out to keep the interviews intact. It would have been extremely helpful for maps of Bronzeville throughout the past 80 years were inserted among the small selection of pictures that are included, in order to help those unfamiliar with the neighborhood navigate through some of the interviewees' memories of businesses, theaters, and homes.

What a wonderful book!
By K. Thompson
Here's my bias. I like history. I like to hear people talk about their lives. I like intelligent, articulate, effective language. And I loved this book. The people interviewed are fascinating, and Timuel Black helps them tell their stories in an unpretentious but by no means diffident way. I learned a great deal and enjoyed myself for many evenings.

Historical Dictionary of Paraguay, by R. Andrew Nickson

Despite its fascinating history, Paraguay remains one of the least known countries in South America. This almost completely revised and updated edition of the 1973 original by Charles Kolinski provides a comprehensive survey of the political and academic history of the country. Over 1,600 entries (and over 500 cross-references) are included, ranging from precolonial times right through to the aftermath of the 1989 overthrow of President Stroessner. An extensive bibliography provides 540 citations, divided into 21 subject classifications. Intended as the definitive reference book on Paraguayan history, this should be of special interest to public and university libraries, as well as to Latin Americanists.

Earl B. Dickerson: A Voice for Freedom and Equality (Chicago Lives), by Robert J. Blakely, Marcus Shepard

Recipient of 2007 The Hyde Park Historical Society Paul Cornell Award

At fifteen, Earl Burrus Dickerson stowed away on a train in Canton, Mississippi, fleeing the racial oppression of his native South. But Chicago, the boy's destination, was no haven of racial fairness and equality. His flight north was in fact the beginning of a journey that would last a lifetime--and would forever pit Dickerson against the forces of racial injustice. Earl B. Dickerson's story, told here for the first time, is one of courage and character, of remarkable accomplishment in the face of terrible odds; it is also emblematic of the twentieth-century struggle for civil rights--a crucial chapter of African American history as it was lived by one uncompromising individual.

In this book, Robert J. Blakely tells how Dickerson (1891-1986) worked his way through preparatory schools and college, a segregated officer's training school, and law school at the University of Chicago. The story follows Dickerson's career as general counsel to the first insurance company owned and operated by African Americans; the first African American Democratic alderman elected to the Chicago City Council; a member of FDR's first Fair Employment Practices Committee; leader of the movement that broke the color barrier to membership in the Illinois Bar Association; and, perhaps most famously, the power behind Hansberry v. Lee, the U.S. Supreme Court case that marked the beginning of the end of restrictive real estate covenants--one of the most pernicious legal tools of segregation in the North. Blakely gives us a sense of the man behind the achievements, the life that defied conventions and statistics, and the world in which "the dean of Chicago's black lawyers" became a pioneering architect for equal opportunity in American life.

From Publishers Weekly
This biography sheds welcome light on the man who sat to the left of Martin Luther King at the 1963 March on Washington. The first black graduate of the University of Chicago Law School and the first black alderman elected to the Chicago City Council, Dickerson arrived in the Windy City at age 15, as a stowaway on the Illinois Central Railroad. Finding the racial situation in Chicago pretty similar to the one he'd left behind in Mississippi, Dickerson spent the rest of his long and active life working toward its improvement. A man of prodigious energy, he was known as the "Dean of Chicago's Black Lawyers" (most notably, arguing Hansberry v. Lee in 1940; a harbinger of the end of racially restrictive covenants) and also became president of one of the largest black-owned insurance companies in America. While Blakely details Dickerson's major political and business accomplishments, he adds dimension to the man's life and gives the reader a keen sense of the African-American social and cultural history through his attention to Dickerson's involvement in Chicago's South Side. Though pedestrian in its prose style, Blakely's straightforward biography makes a meaningful contribution to African-American and Chicago history. (Mar.)

From Booklist
Dickerson's life as social activist, history-making lawyer, and successful businessman reflects the complex, if not paradoxical, role of this individual's struggle for social and racial equality during most of the twentieth century. Among his many "first Negro" achievements: graduation from the University of Chicago Law School, second lieutenant during World War I, founding member of the American Legion, and head of the National Lawyer's Guild. Yet, his primary focus remained a quest to achieve social and racial equality for all Americans. Paradoxically, he was affiliated with the Democrats and Republicans; he was a socialist and yet for 60 years was the general counsel, president, and chairman of the premier black life insurance company in America. But it is within Dickerson's commitment to principles associated with securing social and racial equality that these apparent conflicts reveal an exceptional man, pursuing ideals with action and not mere words. "[A] portrait of its subject so full and affecting that it makes Earl B. Dickerson rise from the page and extend his hand to make your acquaintance." --Chicago Sun-Times

"Earl Dickerson is a household word at the University of Chicago Law School, where he was the first African American graduate and a standout as a student and an alumnus. Robert Blakely's book now shows a wider audience why Earl Dickerson's name is synonymous with courage, farsightedness, civil rights, and progressive pragmatism."

AN ACTIVIST BEFORE HIS TIME!
By Ms.Beyonce
Earl Dickerson is a name unknown to most civil rights activists today, but without his contributions that started nearly eighty years ago the United States would still be "a third world country" in regards to race relations. As Chicago aldermen(the First black Democrat),activist member of FDRs FEPC,member and President(1951-'54) of the progressive National Lawyers Guild(labeled "subversive" by the U.S. Attorney General and the U.S. House Un-Americans)Why is it ALL organizations that want to extend freedom,in the U.S., are labeled "RED"?Mr Dickerson(deceased 1985) was a pioneer and visionary that ALL Americans should get to know and admire.

In this excellent biography you will learn that NOT ALL opponents of expanding Civil Rights to Black Americans were Southern Demcrats(Dixiecrats), and reactionary Republicans, but also so-called "liberals",who did not hesitate to use red-baiting against the wealthy businessman(insurance and the law).In the name of anti-communism many sins have been committed by the U.S. government at home and abroad.A worthy addition to any serious student of recent U.S. history, especially anyone wanting to know more regarding the Civil Rights and Civil Liberties battles of the twentieth-century.You will also learn a lot about the ins and outs of Chicago politics,by reading this book.Gideons Army(3vol.Marzani and Munsell)by the late NU professor of Journalism Curtis MacDougal is a invaluable contribution in getting a look at Illinois, and in general,U.S.leftwing politics in the late 1940s.This book came out in the middle 1960s,it MAY still be available. The role of the U.S. Communist Party,in the Henry Wallace campaign for President in 1948,of which Mr. Dickerson was a supporter, is fully discussed by Prof.MacDougall, who also was a Wallace backer. In the '48 elections Illinois Demcrats made sure that FDRs former Vice President WAS NOT On the ballot.

A thoroughly researched, engagingly told life story
By Midwest Book Review
Prominent journalist Robert J. Blakely and freelance writer Marcus Shepard present Earl B. Dickerson: A Voice for Freedom and Equality, the first ever biography of Earl B. Dickerson (1891-1986), an independent-minded African-American who spent his life struggling against racial injustice. The racial oppression in his native Mississippi forced him to flee to Chicago at age fifteen; yet Chicago was no utopia. Dickerson worked his way through preparatory schools and college, a segregated officers' training school, and law school at the University of Chicago. His distinguished career included membership in FDR's first Fair Employment Practices Committee; leadership in the movement that broke the color barrier to membership in the Illinois State Bar Association; and his driving role behind the Hansberry v. Lee U.S. Supreme Court case that brought about the beginning of the end of restrictive real estate covenants, used as a legal tool of segregation in the North. A thoroughly researched, engagingly told life story that brings to life the man behind the pitched legal battles for social progress.

Chicago's finest Nupe
By Kurupt
Earl B Dickerson is to the Nupes as Thurgood Marshall is to the Alphas. This a well written book that displays how another Black man (besides Dusable) had a great influence on how chicago was developed. Lawyer, Activist, millionaire, and one of the founders of my beloved "Greater" Beta chapter makes Earl B one of the most powerful black men in history. Men like this need more exposure to the masses so that more young black men will have an idol/ role model to pattern themselves after. This is a book that is not only good for black history but is also a very good history of chicago. Highly recommended!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Barbara Pym, by Orphia Jane Allen

Barbara Pym (1913-1980) wrote more than a dozen novels that reflect the life and manners of mid-twentieth-century Britain. Pym's subtle wit and irony infuse the common round of English drawing room comedy with an energy that validates the seeming trivia of women's lives.

Barbara Pym: Writing a Life is about Pym and her novels and about the critical response to her work. Part 1 introduces all of Pym's novels, as well as fragments collected posthumously, in the order in which they were written, relating some of the events in her life-including the public reception of her work-to her themes in the novels. Part 2 is a study of the ten novels that Pym herself prepared for publication. It focuses on some of the autobiographical elements in the novels that Pym herself prepared for publication. It focuses on some of the autobiographical elements in the novels that derive from Pym's concerns about romantic love, the Church, and literature, and discusses some of the techniques Pym used in transmuting these concerns into fiction. Part 3 is a bibliographic essay that summarizes the critical issues that have come to bear on her work. Part 4 is a comprehensive bibliography of primary and secondary sources.

Barbara Pym: Writing a Life is designed to encourage the teaching of Pym's novels and to assist scholars in the critical study of the novels and of Pym's contribution to English literature.

Pym was rediscovered by critics just a few years before her death in 1980. Pym's fans (and there are many) relish her representations of middle-class British life in novels distinguished by nuance and humorous portrayals that generally embrace women characters who most agreeably accept their (ultimately) solitary status. Allen's four-part study offers even more than her intended goals "to distill an essence of Pym." Indeed, this lucid accounting of Pym's entire oeuvre discusses her work in considerable depth, and it also examines critical issues and offers an exhaustive bibliography that will assist literature teachers and Pym scholars. Anyone who enjoys Pym's writing will savor Allen's research and without a doubt be motivated to seek out those novels not yet read. Alice Joyce

Review
This valuable text is clearly the starting point for anyone involved in a process that may lead to starting an archives. (Wilson Library Bulletin)

This book fills a useful niche in the literature and will introduce its subject to many in related professional or administrative fields where the message needs to be got across. (Library Review)

...an attractive publication for the non-archivist who may have to assume some responsiblity for an in-house archives. (Alr)

The manual has a refreshing honesty and realism. (Journal Of The Society Of Archivists)

Examples and illustrations are drawn from many kinds of archives, so that the manual would be equally useful for a business, a religious community, a college or university, a local historical society, or a government agency...The order of preservation is logical, the coverage is broad, of course, but thorough, and each chapter gives reliable advice in a helpful way...Starting an Archives is suitable for anyone contemplating the establishment of such a program, and all the steps in it should be considered and planned before such a program is initiated. It will be helpful for basic workshops...a useful workbook for any in which the desire or necessity of controlling historical records has been recognized. (Collection Management)

...will be an invaluable volume. It fills a need that has long existed in archival literature for a brief, readable introduction...will continue to be an essential element on the archivist's list long after the current computer applications have gone the way of cuneiform and beta cassettes. (The American Archivist)

It is an intellectual road map to the questions which should be asked and the considerations which should be analyzed by any institution or organization deciding how to handle its accumulated records. It is cogent, well organized, and full of useful information for decision makers and those assigned the task of providing them with alternative solutions to record problems. (The Public Historian)

Her book is recommended for any organization interested in starting an archives. (Rare Books and Manuscripts Librarianship)

Start with this book
By Jason Fowler
Starting an Archives is a must have book for anyone who has the responsibility of caring for archive or manuscript collections yet has little experience. In less than one hundred pages, Elizabeth Yakel skillfully navigates the basic process for getting an archive up and running. She discusses planning for an archival program and offers insights regarding expenses, staffing, facilities, and consultants. She addresses many of the issues, such as collection development and appraisal, that archivists deal with prior to a collection being called a collection. Her discussions of arrangement and description are extremely helpful. She also covers issues that are sometimes overlooked, such as providing reference services and outreach. Especially helpful are her appendices, which offer models for deeds of gifts, procedure manuals, and user registration forms.

This book should be on every archivist's shelf, but it should be especially helpful for small start-up archives that one might find in small towns, local libraries, or churches. It would help workers in such organizations to do no harm to their collections and to use terminology common to the archival profession. This would aid the workers greatly when they seek outside consultation. All in all, this book is a very helpful general resource. Most archivists at any level would need more information than this book includes. Issues such as arrangement, description, and preservation require longer, more detailed works to cover all the issues one encounters. Yakel's work, however, is a great beginner's guide that I recommend highly.

A valuable guide to creating an archives
By gloine36
This slim tome is designed for people who are preparing to start an archives. The information here will help them in the planning stage so they prepare their archives in such a manner as befits professional archivists. Even if the planners are professionals, the book still serves as a helpful reminder while for the beginner it provides them with the terms and concepts found in archives today. It also can be used to show them concepts they may have overlooked while also preventing them from making errors that would cost time and money later to correct.
Yakel provides references for more detailed instruction throughout the book which is helpful for additional information in the areas an archives might be focusing on. Elizabeth Yakel is a professional archivist and uses her experiences in the field creating and working in archives with her education as a doctoral student to put together this informative reference. She included examples of archives she herself worked in as well as the experiences she had in creating them. At the end of the book she includes several forms which are quite common to archives as a template for new archives. She also added a list of archival associations for people to look up in their area.
The Society of American Archivists have been busy compiling information and getting it published which serves to aid their cause in the professionalism of their association. By creating this book and other, the society is generating common standards for its practice which will help all types of archives establish universal practices in the future. This book serves that purpose and should be considered for use by many organizations considering what to do with the collections they have in their possession.

Lala's Story: A Memoir of the Holocaust, by Lala Fishman, Steven Weingartner

Winner of 1998 Carl Sandburg Award

Born into a middle-class Jewish family in 1932, Lala Weintraub grew up in Lvov, Poland. When the Nazis came, Lala--who had blond hair and blue eyes--survived by convincing them she was a Christian. This book tells her remarkable story.

Fiercely determined and greatly aided by her Aryan looks, she managed to convince everyone-German soldiers, interrogators, fellow Poles-that she was a Polish gentile. Within a year after the Germans captured Lvov, many of Lala's family members were missing and presumed dead. Lala's Story follows her as she moves from town to town, driven by her fear of being discovered. More than a story of survival, this is the story of a young girl's resolute struggle to defy, resist, and ultimately defeat the evil forces pursuing her.

From Kirkus Reviews
Another entry in Northwestern's ``Jewish Lives'' series (for another, see Ruth Liepman, Maybe Luck Isn't Just Chance, p. 1690), this volume recounts the experiences of a young Polish-Jewish girl between 1939 and 1945. Fishman (n‚e Clara Weintraub) was the daughter of secular, comfortable, if not prosperous, Russian Jews. Her father was a successful jazz musician in Lvov and, for a time, head of the musicians' union in that city; her mother's family had enjoyed some success in business. The Weintraubs' world was shattered repeatedly, first by pogroms, then by the Russian Revolution, and finally, and most appallingly, by the Holocaust. At first, fate was kind to them, with Lvov falling under the jurisdiction of the Red Army, but when Hitler invaded Russia and the Russians were driven out of Poland by the Wehrmacht, the round-ups and mass murders began. Lala avoided the fate that befell most of her family because she was resourceful, spunky, and a blue-eyed blonde. She managed to successfully pass for a Polish Catholic under the fictional name Urszula Krzyzanowska, narrowly avoiding arrest and certain death on numerous occasions. Like so many other recent Holocaust memoirs, this volume serves as an important reminder of the cataclysm's terrible cost, of the sheer viciousness with which the Nazis attacked not only the Jews but also the civilian population of Poland. Indeed, the most riveting section of the book is a lengthy recounting of the first day of the war, the chaos, noise, dirt, smoke, blood, and wreckage, as experienced by a teenage girl. At its best, Lala's Story reads like a good thriller. At its worst it is perfunctory but never dull. Among the better recent Holocaust memoirs, with a firm grounding in Polish-Jewish history and an admirable frankness that makes no effort to disguise its heroine's human foibles. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. From the Back Cover
Born into a middle-class Jewish family in 1922, Lala Weintraub grew up in Lvov, Poland. Her parents were assimilated Jews, and the family lived in a religiously and ethnically mixed neighborhood. When the Nazis came, Lala - who had blond hair and blue eyes - survived by convincing them she was a Christian. This book tells her remarkable story. Lala's Story begins with the 1945 liberation of Katowice, the Polish town where she was living. In the days that followed, Lala's mood swung between euphoria and despair. Believing her entire family to be dead, and having lived under an assumed identity for so long, she had no idea who she was or what to do next. Lala recalls preparing for the Nazi arrival by obtaining forged papers and memorizing Catholic prayers and rituals; she relates how, fiercely determined and greatly aided by her Aryan looks, she managed to convince everyone - German soldiers, interrogators, fellow Poles - that she was a Polish Gentile girl named Urszula Krzyanowska. Within a year after Lvov was captured by the German forces, many of Lala's family members were missing and presumed dead; Lala's Story follows Fishman as she moves from town to town in an effort to avoid the same fate, driven by her fear of being discovered. The book ends by bringing her story up to the present day.

Rich Detail and Vivid Recollections of a Monstrous Time
By Stuart W. Mirsky
This memoir, rich in texture and detail, reflects the extensive research the protagonist's co-author, Steven Weingartner, seems to have done in preparation for writing this work (since so much of the history and background recalled here would have been beyond the ken of Lala Fishman, the story's narrator). The authors trace Ms. Fishman's family roots, from what was then the Ukraine into the Poland of that era, and provide, in remarkably vivid detail, a picture of what it was like to live through two back-to-back invasions of Poland: the joint Nazi-Soviet attacks of 1939 followed by the treacherous Nazi thrust against Stalin's Soviet Union in 1941. For Jews like Fishman, the advent of the Nazis into eastern Poland made a trying situation, under Communist rule, infinitely worse as the Nazis systematically undertook to exterminate the Jews.

Fishman recalls both the telling details and her own reflections as the Nazi terror swirled around her. From the initial indignities of Nazi restrictions on the Jewish population, to the construction of the ghetto and the unpredictable "actions" that swept Jews indiscriminately off the streets and into oblivion, to the whittling away of her own family members, one by one, as they are taken in the "actions," Fishman describes the growing sense of dread and helplessness that overwhelmed the Jews she knew. Witness to brutal hangings of Jews by Gestapo soldiers in the streets, arrested more than once herself, Fishman, on the verge of adulthood, finally recognizes that no help is coming and that there can be only one end to it all.

"It's a trap," she tells her distraught father and mother when the Nazis initially press them to enter the ghetto, a place to get all the Jews together she insists so they can finish them off. Her family, heeding her words, stays put for as long as they can. But they can't hold out forever and Fishman must finally flee the city of Lvov with what's left of her family (her broken mother and nine year old sister) after her uncles and father disappear and her elderly grandmother is grabbed from their apartment in a surprise Nazi raid.

But flight alone is barely enough, for Fishman can't escape the cruelties of the Nazis and their Ukrainian minions, nor the cold anti-Semitism of many Poles. Yet it's through other Poles, men and women of good will, that Fishman is finally enabled to survive. Relying on false papers and the training in Catholic ritual and teaching she receives in a crash course from Catholic friends, Fishman contrives to "pass" as a Catholic Polish girl. Still, she is taken and beaten by Nazi interrogators, stripped to her underwear for their inspection and finally, on winning a temporary reprieve, flees into the nearby countryside as the Gestapo pursue her and a friend. The journey takes Fishman into a new life, one of deception and paranoia where she must constantly live with the memory of her lost family, including the broken spirited mother and terrified nine year old sister she was forced to abandon to save herself.

Sometimes, though, there's almost too much research here, too much detail about things Fishman could not have known while she was living it all. But the episodes of flight and survival recalled by Fishman, and recounted here, make this story a valuable window into an era which saw the brutal eradication of Europe's Jews.
