David Koker's diary is one of the most notable accounts of life in a German concentration camp written by a Jew during the years of the Holocaust. First brought to attention when the Dutch historian Jacob Presser-Koker's history teacher in high school-quoted from Koker's diary in his monumental history, published in English as The Destruction of the Dutch Jews (1968), the diary itself became a part of the Dutch literary canon when it was published in 1977 as Dagboek geschreven in Vught (Diary Written in Vught). It has remained in print ever since, and is notable for its literary qualities, weaving poetry and powerful observations of the emotional life of a camp prisoner, including reflections after an in-person visit by Heinrich Himmler. Surprisingly, the book has never before been translated into English.

During his time in the Vught concentration camp, the 21-year-old David recorded on an almost daily basis his observations, thoughts, and feelings. He mercilessly probed the abyss that opened around him and, at times, within himself. David's diary covers almost a year, both charting his daily life in Vught as it developed over time and tracing his spiritual evolution as a writer. Until early February 1944, David was able to smuggle some 73,000 words from the camp to his best friend Karel van het Reve, a non-Jew.

With an informative introduction, annotation, and list of dramatis personae by Robert Jan van Pelt, At the Edge of the Abyss offers an immediate and wholly original look into the life of a concentration camp prisoner.

About the Author
David Koker was transported to the Vught Concentration Camp in 1943. During his time in Vught, David recorded on an almost daily basis his observations, thoughts and feelings. Unlike Anne Frank, who had a purposefully made diary book available in her hiding place, David did not have such a luxury in the camp. He wrote his entries on whatever scraps of paper he was able to find. Most of the paper was the rolling paper for cigarettes-available as the result of a lack of cigarette tobacco. Until early February 1944, David was able to smuggle some 73,000 words from the camp to his best friend Karel van het Reeve, a non-Jew. The part of the diary that David kept between 8 February 1944 and June 1944, when he was deported to Poland, did not survive the war.

WWII Nazi Concentration Camp Diary by Dutch Jew

"At the Edge of the Abyss: A Concentration Camp Diary, 1943-1944" by David Koker, first English publication in March 2012. (From partial comments by Jordan M. Smith in a review in the 28 March 2012 Tablet online magazine): The author, a Dutch Jew, was arrested in February 1943 and died in early 1945. "Before he died, however, Koker authored what may be the most extraordinary diary ever written inside a concentration camp. "In my opinion, it's considerably more interesting than Anne Frank's diary," said Michiel Horn, a historian at Toronto's York University and the book's translator. . . [The author] " ingratiated himself with the chief camp clerk and his wife, which provided him with a relatively privileged position. In addition to keeping a diary, he was also able to write and receive letters, some of which are excerpted in the book. . . [This book is] the only first-person report of an encounter between a Jew and Heinrich Himmler, head Nazi and overseer of all the camps. On Feb. 4, 1944, Koker records that on the previous day he had looked directly at the man responsible for the Final Solution. The haunting entry reads as follows: [nope, not gonna reprint here; those comments await reading in the book -- BG]. . . "What makes this passage remarkable is not just the fact of the encounter but Koker's careful, emotionally attuned attention to detail. Koker notices not just Himmler but the deference of his supplicants. He observes with nonchalance, as if he were encountering not a genocidal murderer--and the person who keeps Koker in a concentration camp--but an ordinary man on the street. . . . If there are lovely moments of affection and poetic sentiment in At the Edge of the Abyss, however, it is very far from a Life Is Beautiful-style attempt to put a positive spin on the worst of human depravity. "Unlike Anne Frank's diary or Etty Hillesum's letters, David's diary is not a source of optimism or spirituality," as van Pelt puts it. "Instead he mercilessly probes the abyss that opens around him and within himself." The results often make for brutal reading. Koker can be tender, but he is also ambitious and cold."

A Very Painful Read

I have read literally hundreds of books about the Holocaust, but of all the personal accounts I've read, this somehow was absolutely the most devastating, perhaps because it wasn't a memoir, but an account of events at the very time they happened. David Koker was no saint, but he was a brilliant soul. Besides the human cruelty and devastation, the thing that hit me the hardest was to realize that by killing 6,000,000 innocent men, women and children, the Nazis killed so much potential: brilliant minds in the arts, sciences, and medicine. Perhaps they killed the cure for cancer when they killed doctors and researchers; perhaps they killed the next Mozart or Beethoven when they killed the musicians; perhaps they killed the next Picasso when they killed the artists; really, the toll of killed potential and subsequent loss is so vast it's immeasurable Clearly if these people had lived, our world would have been a different place today. One feels absolutely sickened during and after reading this book, and it's a very very hard book to read; but it's an important read and necessary to honor the memory of all the David Kokers of that time whose inspiring and future lives were cut short so prematurely and perniciously.

A humbling book

It is such a touching book, I can't give it five stars and say I loved it. I read it and it made me quite upset at times. I thought about the contents of the book, the diary of David Koker, long after I finished reading it.
I donated my copy to the local library, so more people would read it and get to know and understand what happened to people during the Holocaust. David was a poet by nature, he was brave and courageous. The story isn't about him, it is more about the people he was imprisoned with, we find out their personal story and destiny. David wrote about the friends and family outside the internment camp who supported him and others.
A humbling book about a man who ended up living in hell. This book ought to be on the syllabus of our school and universities.

An Important Translation, Even If Incomplete

Cohen's translation includes many of Levinas' important essays on Husserl, and holds a special place in Levinas scholarship for this reason. The essays in the book range from the 1930s to the 1980s, so it is useful for tracking the development of Levinas' reading of Husserl over the years. More important, the articles in this book show that for Levinas phenomenology isn't something to "escape" but is to be taken seriously. We can see this much in his two articles from 1959, "Reflections on Phenomenological Technique" and "The Ruin of Representation". As a book on Levinas' relation to Husserl, this work is indispensable.

However, this English translation is not without its problems. The full title of the French publication translates as _Discovering Existence with Husserl and Heidegger_ and the book itself contains articles on both Husserl and Heidegger. The translator Richard A. Cohen modifies the book's title and most of the articles on Heidegger are not included in the translation. Why would a translator modify the title of such an important book in Levinas' oeuvre and then omit many of its articles? In his foreword Cohen does not give an answer. It turns out, then, that this translation does not give a full picture of Levinas' relation to phenomenology, for Levinas' reading of Husserl is in many ways influenced by Heidegger.

Although the translation is incomplete, it is still important because it contains articles by Levinas that have not been published elsewhere in English.

A View onto a New Plateau

It is such a pleasure to read the work of a world-class philosopher who is also a superb writer. When it comes to grasping phenomenology, maybe nothing less would do. I recommend this book as an introduction to Husserl's difficult corpus, but also and even more importantly as an orientation to what phenomenology opens up to perception, thought and comprehension.
Levinas offers a way to realize how Husserl points to a moment of our creaturely constitution that precedes our being conscious of it. I agree with Levinas that Husserl himself remains ensconced in the problems of knowledge, and I also agree with Derrida who points out that Husserl (and to some extent Levinas) remain within the traditional metaphysical rendering of knowledge. Still Husserl's orientation toward constitution and emergence of lived experience adumbrates (to use a Husserlian word) a different plane of existence than is available through our objectifying, identifying, same-making natural attitude and science. Levinas brings this awareness to life, calling it "awakening," and contrasting it to the deadened, somnambulant world of commerce, exchange and discourse.
The first essays provide a sweeping and penetrating overview of the Husserlian project. In the middle essays Levinas allows his own views of the primacy of ethical philosophy and the Other to appear. I especially enjoyed the essays in the last section, where Levinas exquisitely articulates the new sensibility Husserl opens onto.
In my humble estimation (and this is what Derrida points to as well, in Speech and Phenomena), we are being introduced here to a realm of existence that cannot be adequately approached through translations, extensions or inversions of classical disciplines. Instead, the very aliveness of the "primal impressions" that Husserl delineates calls for a new level of human engagement, a new facultative capability. Even Levinas comes up short there.
But developing such a new capability is now in play, in the works of our mystics, artists and prophets. I am sure of that (see [...]). To arrive at a suitable description of what it to be engaged, and to develop a curriculum and regimen and even a practice to foster such a development requires deep study and constant consideration of what Levinas offers us in this superb volume.

Genin comments that it is the duty of the Jewish people to tell the story of their exodus from Egypt. In this memoir, she molds that philosophy to fit her own personal history. Though billed as a story of Jewish ghetto life during Hitler's rise (Genin was born in Berlin in 1932 and emigrated to Australia with her mother and her sisters in 1939), this account says little about the Eastern Europe of that era, instead focusing on her dysfunctional family in the Jewish quarter of Lemberg (Lvov). First she describes the struggles of her mother, Shayndl, to be with the man she loved and the lover's abandonment of his family. In the second half of the book, when Genin talks about her own life, she soon succumbs to the language of therapy, and the writing disintegrates. Not recommended.?Jill Jaracz, Chicago

a real disappointment

In 1999, while living in Berlin and planning a trip to Lemberg (Lviv), I met the author and bought this memoir. I had hoped to learn a bit about Jewish life in pre-1939 Berlin and Lemberg. I was sorely disappointed.
The depiction of life in Lemberg and Berlin is superficial, but one should keep in mind how old the author was at the time of the story. The author has chosen to use her memoir as a form of cathartic therapy. She goes to lengths to portray her family negatively, and she gratuitously dwells on her psychosexual development as a child. Her psychological difficulties as an adult in Australia do not really have much relevance to the story of central European Jewry living under the shadow of doom.
Is there anything redeeming about this book? Some of the descriptions of her family's difficulties in Berlin are interesting, and the accompanying essay is not bad. This memoir is the sort of work that merits only the barest of mentions in a scholarly bibliographic essay or the bibliography of an academic work on prewar Berlin Jewry. The casual reader will likely find that he has wasted his time and money.

In 1955, south-sider Leon Despres was elected to the Chicago City Council-the same year that Paddy Bauler famously uttered that "Chicago ain't ready for reform." Ready or not, Chicago got twenty years of reform efforts from Despres, one of the few independents in the council and the most liberal alderman in the city. His demand to cut out the corrupt sale of city driveway permits made him enemies from the very beginning. Over the years his crusades to ban discrimination, preserve Chicago landmark buildings, and gain equality for African-Americans-when Daley-beholden African-American council members refused to help-threw wrench after wrench into the Machine. And, not incidentally, changed the city.

But Challenging the Daley Machine is more than a memoir. It's a historical portrait of the way things were done under the Boss, when changing times and a changing city forced the Machine to confront the problems Despres championed. His battles against the seemingly monolithic Machine are also an inspiration to anyone who is facing long odds, but is convinced he/she is on the side of right.

About the Author
Leon M. Despres was born in 1908 in Chicago. He graduated from the University of Chicago Law School in 1929. Since leaving the Chicago City Council in 1975 he has served as a parliamentarian for the Jane Byrne and Harold Washington administrations and worked as an attorney, teacher, and lecturer. Despres lives in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago.

Kenan Heise spent seven years as a Franciscan monk before starting a thirty-year career at the Chicago Tribune. His many books include Chicago the Beautiful (Bonus, 2001) and Resurrection Mary: A Ghost Story (Chicago Historical Bookworks, 1990).

Necessity for young scientists!

Science Fair.....What is it? This book tells you that and much more, step-by-step. It is the best introduction to participating in and organizing a Science Fair that I've seen. Written with elementary age students in mind, SCINECE FAIR PROJECTS FOR ELEMENTARY STUDENTS by Patricia Wee,is also aimed at the adults envolved with these students and is extremely helpful telling them what needs to be done to succeed. Everything you need to know is right here and "Curiosity Bug" actually talks the students through every step of a project. Lots of Project ideas are included, too. It's a wonderful guide for students, teachers, and parents.

A study on indifference

This novel was born out of several previous short novellas, which Broch weaved together, adding new chapters and orderered to tell one multilayered story, a rich, complex and deep one. It is the story of A., a Dutch financier who lives in Germany. The three parts of the book correspond to the years 1913, 1923 and 1933. Besides portraying the pre-Hitlerian Germany, it is a metaphysical novel, in the strictest sense of the concept. The fundamental subject is indifference as an attitude towards life. "A" is indifferent to practically everything, including the suffering of his lover and, of course, political and social problems. The book is called "The guiltless" because no one assumes themselves as responsible for the dangerous path Germany was following in those years. However, "A" will pay a price for his indifference.
This novel is, then, a reflection on the social environment that led to Nazism. Broch is a dense but good writer, and I think this novel is recommended to any serious lovers of literature, but also for those interested in observing a recreation and a meditation on Germany in those three crucial decades for the world.

Arguably Broch's best novel. Not as overwrought as 'Death of Virgil', nor as tangential as 'The Sleepwalkers'. Here he finally cuts deep into the German mind tha lead to the horrors of WWII with lessons for all mankind. Brilliant.
